Have an in person advanced Japanese class starting this month (!!!), and they suggested we get the book from Amazon since we don’t have a local Kinokuniya or other Japanese bookstore.. Well as it turns out, the price on Amazon.jp with shipping was still cheaper then the price on Amazon here. And since I had to buy off of Amazon anyway, I figured I’d throw in the two new manga that I’ve needed to grab for a while: 僕らの食卓 | L20 おかわり 2 and https://learnnatively.com/book/91e84afb69/. I think it all came out to about $10 more than the textbooks and shipping was functionally free!
Then over the weekend we were out with friends and found a neat collectables store. Since we’re all big nerds (), we went in to look at what they had. There was one tiny bookshelf, and I noticed some Japanese language manga on the shelf. Turns out it was 6 volumes of 今日から マ のつく自由業! | L24??!! Not only were they $3 each, the whole store was 20% off for the weekend (!!), so with tax the 6 volumes were CAD $15.12. That’s BookOff prices! (Un?)fortunately, there wasn’t a lot else in Japanese, and what was there was just singles out of long series, so this was a score I was happy to come across. The cashier also seemed really happy that not only could I read the books, but that I knew of the series, and I had a large manga collection that it was going to become a part of. It was a really neat experience.
CD Japan now shows more details for the U.S. tariff impacts. Looks like everything is charged upon delivery except for FedEx FICP, which is prepaid at checkout. I’ll probably just go with FedEx FICP and hope for the best.
I usually don’t go for these sorta things, but found a set of 95 shoujo manga (different series, all seem to be complete sets) for 3449円. It has some stuff I’m interested in, but I fear the shipping Anyway thought I’d post here, in case anyone else is interested: CDJapan : 少女漫画まとめ売り 12作品95冊 中古 古本 完結 / Proxy Shopping Service - Mercari
Two books by 高村薫 (one of which won the Naoki Prize) - unfortunately both are the 上 part only… The third book was a spontaneous acquisition based on the title only - later I sat down in a park to admire my haul, and I discovered that it contains four short stories who (or some of which) have been published in a SF magazine Is this the book my first Bingo is waiting for?
Haha great! I read the foreword in the meantime, and his reasoning is that Kaguyahime is an alien intruder from outer space who used a bamboo rocket to better conceal this, and who came to Earth solely to hang out with the guys and to be a greedy and selfish person. (He mentioned that you can still find some specimens in Ginza even nowadays.)
I think I like this author already
Note: they did already have the notice up about the tariff, at the time I ordered (on like Sep 9 or something). I think the checkout process states the fees upfront now.
I’m not sure how they arrived at these exact numbers, but the conclusion is that an order that had been 7716 subtotal increased by 2752 yen. The “shipping” (Edit: everything that wasn’t the subtotal) became 1.5x higher than before (not counting any proxy adjustments, which I’m sure will make me when I get them in the next few days). This is for 29 manga (2 sets) + 1 manga magazine.
I was using “shipping” to mean “anything not the subtotal”. Sry for the confusion
However I understand this page correctly, I’m getting a flat 15% on everything besides Yurihime, bc it’s proxy stuff
Customs fee: handling fee 1300円
For proxy purchases directly from Mercari, Rakuten, Yahoo! Shopping, or BASE, we’re unable to confirm the product’s media type at checkout. As a result, when shipping with FedEx FICP, a flat 15% duty will be applied to all items.
Anyway, I find the math here confusing as hell (not my strong point lol). Maybe someone else can make sense of it
that’s the problem…trying to apply logic to this insanity
I’d email CDjapan and ask them for a specific breakdown on how it’s getting charged…
was playing with a spreadsheet, don’t have all the numbers so can’t quite be sure but if your shipping increased by 508 yen then that’s where the difference is…otherwise (based on the numbers I see…not completely sure)
but if a flat 15% was applied across the whole thing then that would be 1452 yen based on the delta which would be put against 9680 yen which is higher than your sub
if the duties of 944 listed are 15% of whatever is tarrifable then that would be 6293 (maybe some of your proxy isn’t tarrifd)
another thing it could be, CDJapan does this all the time, is the estimated shipping was always less than actual and maybe they figured out the shipping and updated that number at the same time they did this?
someone said (IIRC) that some countries charge tarrif on shipping costs as well so don’t know if that’s it… but then the duties that are listed have 944 yen also? either way doesn’t quite work out - quick and dirty math
or if you can provide more details I can try to tinker and see if i can back into the numbers and figure it out. It might be this…
I have one order still pending but it was all pre tarrif bs crap and it’s DHL but have to wait another couple of weeks to find out what the damage is going to be. Honestly still thinking I should try to cancel even though it’s unmodifiable but who the hell knows.
With all the chaos I haven’t ordered anything else and this will be the first year in a long time I’m not ordering any calendars for myself or holiday gifts…just because there isn’t supposed to be a tarrif now doesn’t mean…
