I had 4ish book boxes in this last move. Some of them had some spillover from other book types, so maybe closer to 3 book boxes. Mostly manga, but maybe 3/4 of a box of novels.
I am afraid to count them so I’m only keeping track of the space they take up
For one, if for some reason I loose access to my eBooks, manga are less important to me, see below.
And further, I like to add furigana or comments to the novels w/o reserve. In manga this would disturb the look of the pages and I wouldn’t do it anyway.
And last not least, when I see myself in the future sitting leisurely in a comfortable chair reading a novel w/o dictionary, I see myself turning pages, be it old-fashioned or not
Manga are more like newspapers to me, read once and soon forgotten, no problem if they didn’t physically exist, from the start. Evidence: if I can read five volumes of a series for free, I read them and then start buying the series from volume #6.
I’ll update once my order arrives today but atm for physical books in total it’s not that far off 1000 Japanese books though about 80 are textbooks, dictionaries or language resources
Japanese - physical books only
Manga - 37 series - 196 books
Children’s books - 24 series - 91 books
Novels/ light novels - 512 books
Graded readers - 24 books
Non fiction - 18 books
Textbooks, dictionaries and language resources - 118 books
I have a stack of audiobooks and e-books in Japanese and Spanish as well. I also have other manga/ graphic novels in English and Spanish, a few language resources for Spanish, German, Latin and Hieroglyphs. Then the rest of my books are all in English but split almost evenly across non fiction “how to” and novels. Least I can never say I won’t have anything to do when I retire. My Japanese and English book count is almost on par, leaning to slightly more on the English side at the moment.
My ラブ★コン 15 | L25 copy had a sticker set, and also the obi from when it got picked for an anime adaptation. Early volumes had the live action movie obi - which was now out as a DVD, when this happened
I had been off of physical media for a while, as I like to use yomitan for look-ups. However, I recently moved, and my new local library has a really good Japanese section!
I read so much more in one sitting when I’m not on the computer, I think I’m going to try to do more physical books and worry less about look-ups going forward.
Tbh only reason I have a count is cuz I kept a spreadsheet from early on, to prevent double purchases, and also so I could remember which volumes I was missing, when I went to make a purchase
Reminds me, I need to update my 5 physicals per month challenge log
I own approximately 280 (physical) Japanese books (prose and manga), of which I have read approximately 130, which means I’m much closer to having read half of everything I own than it felt like I was! I probably won’t be able to read 10 volumes in order to cross that threshold by the end of the year (especially since I’ve just started also reading digitally), but it’ll be fun to reach that milestone in the new year!
