魔入りました!入間くん | L28 is also on sale: volumes 1-5 are ¥264 each, and ¥475 after.

sweet, been meaning to check out iruma; i heard people say its like mashle but more than one note

I can see a common point, but Mashle is overpowered while for Iruma it’s a bit more complicated.

The starting volumes of Iruma can often be read for free for some period. Btw the author is still very productive, produces at least three volumes per year.

スターツ出版 is providing a 30% off coupon for their 女性向け LN on booklive… I read one series in there already and it was bad (got tricked by the “number 1” on the cover at the time, without realizing that the fine prints said “in the daily ranking of Narou, in the for women section of the isekai category…”; I can see another series using the same trick)

A bunch of stuff look interesting… but I don’t know if I trust them.

Anyway, I’ll just post the link, just in case.

Probly most ppl here know that Suruga-ya does this already, but in case anyone doesn’t: free shipping till 10/24 6PM JST. You may want to put the site in Japanese for the search engine to work most effectively. Mostly everything there is used, but occasionally some stuff is new, and it’s almost always excellent condition either way.

Unrelated to book deals

I don’t normally take advantage of the free shipping deals, but I think I might this time. I’ve been collection D.Gray-man trading cards and buying singles is generally the best deal when looking for specific cards, as opposed to buying lots. Proxy fees per card make that really expensive, though, so I need to see what kind of stock the English site has. I’m crossing my fingers they’ve got a good number of them…

If you mean Suruga-ya, it’s the same site, you’re just changing the language (tho there is a separate domestic site). Good luck with the cards!

Just remember that Surugaya almost always offers free shipping (like every week) so whenever I remember something I want, I just add it to my wishlist and wait for the next shipping promo. Also the global site adds on 25% to the price (they added a min price to books and also removed book sets as well probably due to weight). Just some things to keep in mind to figure out if you really are getting a deal. Like if I buy a 10k yen DVD, it’s charging me 2500yen extra for that item alone. I buy from the global site if I’m in a rush or if it’s cheap/heavy enough, but otherwise I order from their Jp site and use a forwarding service for shipping.

I’ve also found that they are a bit sloppy with international orders (e.g. often a huge box and your items in a stack wrapped to one piece of cardboard with no cushioning) so many of my books come with scuffed corners compared to ordering from their Jp site.

I’m a shopaholic and order a lot at once though so maybe that makes a difference lol.

I hadn’t considered ordering from their Japanese site through a proxy. Do you have one that makes sense? I usually order from Mandarake when I’m making big orders because their prices usually make up for the shipping costs, but they only have manga and LN and no children’s books or literature, so I’ve been buying that from Surugaya with free shipping.

Good to know. You’re still getting a deal either way, just maybe not the most optimal deal.

This solves the mystery of how the free shipping doesn’t cause them to lose tons of money. That’s really good to know about the sets!

I’ve gotten stuff packed this way, and was really surprised the first time, but nothing has ever come damaged as a result

Do you have one you’d recommend? Would like to try pricing out an order to see just what the difference comes out to. I’ve used FromJapan and Cdjapan for proxy orders, but good to know if there’s a better option

Ahhh I totally forgot about Mandarake! Bit more of a pain, but sometimes you can find a good enough deal to make it work

Yeah, like if you only want to buy from Surugaya and none of your items are on the higher end, it’s an amazing deal, especially given how fast the shipping is! I shamelessly order cheap books/cds there since they can be so heavy/expensive to ship! :see_no_evil:

I buy from a lot of vendors at once so I use a forwarding service instead of a proxy. That also means I’m responsible for creating an account/making the orders and responding/reaching out to customer service (free keigo practice!) whenever there are issues or when I need to make changes to my address/order/etc.

Tenso is the most common one; I’ve never used it but it seems they charge a handling fee depending on package weight (starting from 1 yen per gram) and 300yen per package received to consolidate. https://www.tenso.com/en/usage_fee

I use baggageforward and it’s usually ~1000 or 2000yen service fee depending shipment method/weight and 750yen to consolidate all your entire package, then an additional 3% if you can’t use a Japanese payment method. It can be expensive if you’re only getting a few packages, but it can be worth it if you wanted to buy things from multiple vendors on amazon jp, surugaya, book off and mandarake-- you’re still paying the same service fee amount no matter how many packages you have, at least until you hit the next big weight bracket.

For proxies, I’ve also heard of ZenMarket being inexpensive compared to the others, but since it would cost me too much to pay a fee per item, I haven’t used proxies in a while! I used to use FromJapan though before I fell down the rabbit hole of merch shopping lol.

Ahhh, so there’s the catch. I tried pricing out my recent Suruga-ya order of 13 B6 manga, 1 magazine, and a light novel, using the weights mentioned here, and based on a Suruga-ya box I’ve got lying around. Weight: 2.3kg, Dimensions: 40x30x20 cm. Destination: US

Thing Subtotal Shipping After Fees
International (DHL) 11,022 0 11,822
Domestic (75%) 8,866 0 ?
Baggage Forward (DHL) 960 9,280 10,240
Domestic + Baggage Fwd 19,106
Tenso (DHL ) 5,822
Domestic + Tenso 14,688

Tenso’s calculator is not specific enough for DHL, so the actual price may vary. In any case, Suruga-ya international wins by about 3k-7k yen ($20-46 USD) here. Of course if you add sets into the equation, that might work out very differently.

So they say 500 yen per item, though if you buy multiple copies of the same thing, they only charge it once. Also their Suruga-ya prices seem higher than the international store (maybe that means they included the 500 yen fee already?), and they only list in USD for me. So after 5-6 items, Cdjapan has them beat (1200 service fee + 300 per item). 12 items = 4,800 yen fees. Plus you can add things to an existing order, without having to worry about consolidation fees (though you can additionally consolidate if you want). I did a breakdown for my order the other day, in case it’s of interest
