I was super excited to read this based on the premise and MAL reviews, but it’s still one of the worst books I’ve read in Japanese. I don’t really remember the plot points since it’s been so long since I read it, but the writing quality was also pretty lackluster.
(Yes, I am one of those low score reviewers, but I can’t help but chime in on this book in particular because the book felt like such a lost opportunity)
Make account on Amazon jp with a different email and a random physical japanese address.
i think I saw a recommendation for that because logging in from kindle device it just asks for credentials and not for marketplace, unlike apps & websites. If anyone is using the same email and can prove/disprove would be nice.
Normal (non jp) credit cards should work. If it complains, use vpn (set to Japan) for one purchase and then it should work without vpn.
Note that you cannot use you usual and you amazon jp account on a device together. You’ll have to log out from one and log in to another and all your downloaded books will have to go back to cloud. I don’t know what happens to stuff you’ve sent/copied to kindle - I’d assume it goes to Kindle’s cloud, but idk.
After that it’s the usual - one-click buy on the site (because app doesn’t support purshace anymore), same as your normal amazon.
UPD: I see I didn’t set my phone number on that acc (neither in the address nor for the 2FA), and had no issues with for the last two years. My website is set to English so when I went to bother support about light novels not being grouped nicely in series like manga is, it automatically put me through to English-speaking support email, which is nice as I can’t write at all lol
I would make sure to note down that address somewhere, in case of a reclaim to a blocked account.
There was a case where (though not with Amazon) reclaim was impossible, because the person “couldn’t remember their address“, which is of course a fishy situation as you actually said that you live there.
I don’t think there is a publicly disclosed way to dedrm bookwalker books.
I believe kobo can be dedrm’d when using the windows app. Saw a video about that short while back. I got an older kindle which still downloads books in the old format, meaning I can still dedrm those books.
It’s also manual work, you have to run it and manually page through the entire volume, but don’t go too fast or it will skip pages. It also will get pages mixed up sometimes (Namely the table of contents and inside covers will sometimes get switched around). Overall it’s a good idea to check its progress while ripping.
And, worst of all (for me anyway), it only works on Windows.
It tried it with books, but from my testing it fails pretty miserably. I tried 2 free sample books. It failed to capture anything from one of them, and only pulled ~10% of the other. Also, it saves the pages as images, the same as with comics.
Finally, the last time it was updated was almost 2 years ago, and the latest official version release was a year before that, so I would only expect it to get more out of date and less reliable over time.
It works! And it’s so much better than the other solution! It automatically downloads everything, and it works on Linux! Though I did spend more than an hour failing to get it to work on Windows.
It even downloads proper books! Granted, they are downloaded as images, but I’m pretty sure that’s just how Bookwalker serves its books in the first place.
Though be aware that you will need Chrome/Chromium version 145 (And will need to uninstall any older versions) which you will need the beta branch of Chrome to get and you need Python 3.13 or greater, which was a bit annoying on my older Ubuntu 22 install.
Also, it is a command line tool, so non-techy people may be intimidated, but it’s not actually that complicated to use.
You will still need a tool like KCC comic converter to package the pages together nicely.
oh darn I never got why this doesn’t work for me, it was because I never tried with the beta branch of chrome! Thank you for leading me onto the correct path, lol. This is so much nicer than everything else I was using.
Well, 僕の心のヤバイやつ 1 - 桜井のりお - 電子書籍・無料漫画ならブックライブ has a sale again (first 5 volumes are half? price [I bought them already, so I can’t see the price] and free to read for a while) because of the anime coming out. That’s the booklive link, but I assume other platform will have the same offer.
