I’ve seen the first couple of episodes! Very cute show, I like it : )
Hello hello
I come here seeking aid
Specifically if anybody has anything uplifting or wholesome to recommend
(preferably j-drama but will accept any anime/movie recommendations as well )
I count on you my comrades
Drama:
Anime:
Thank you
Thank you
I think I have the manga for this btw lol
I’ve realized that it’s hard for me to understand yakuza/samurai/coarse male speech. Does anyone know anything, ideally in N3, that has characters that speak like that to get more practice?
Back Street Girls - a black comedy about three yakuza who got an offer they can’t refuse, namely to become idols.
ヒナまつり S1 - a comedy about some yakuza who gets a visit from some girl with supernatural powers, which can come in handy in his “business“, if she doesn’t use them on him.
どろろ S1 - remake of a famous series about a “samurai“ in search of his body parts, which his father sold to demons in exchange for dominance on the battlefield.
Haha ヒナまつり was already on my wishlist so that seems like a great place to start. Gonna see if I can find subs for all of these and check them out!
You can of course also continue with some more 400+ episodes of Dragonball. Most of the guys there have a rough language. But maybe that is why you want some additional input…
That is what is reminding me of my weaknesses.
Although I can usually follow Dragon Ball conversations (as long as I can hear what they’re saying…) and there have been only a few that I’ve had much trouble with. Master Roshi and the 牛魔王 are the only ones who have given me any trouble so far.)
This might be too vague but I’ll ask anyways.
Does anybody have an anime they like where one of the main characters doesn’t know anything about the world around them and needs to ask a lot of questions?
Maybe they have amnesia? Or they are a robot/alien?
I’m trying to avoid the reason for their lack of information being that they are a little kid, because I tend to find that less interesting.
Any difficulty level is fine.
Question inspired by me riding the high of using ちょびっツ as easy listening practice.
Edit:
Another way to describe what I want is “character experiencing the world for the first time and learning new things”.
Not sure if they’ll be 100% what you’re looking for, but:
- ツバサ・クロニクル S1 | L26 - Sakura has amnesia, and has to regain her memories (if you’ve seen CCS, this reuses the same character designs and general relationships, but different/more mature personalities. I like this better)
- There’s things from some of their other series too, like Mokona
- ログ・ホライズン S1 | L31 - Isekai into computer game(?) - everybody half knows how things work, and half don’t
- 灰と幻想のグリムガル S1 | L28 - mass isekai into completely unknown world, barely any knowledge of life prior to then, lowest level party, trying to get by day by day
- this is really unique amongst Isekai, for its very watercolor-esque, animation style, pacing, slice of life that isn’t just for humor, etc
- Re:ゼロから始める異世界生活 S1 | L32 - isekai, main character is extremely clueless (both as an individual, and through not having information)
- あの夏で待ってる S1 | L23 - both a romance and a comedy. The female lead is seemingly a bit clueless about how a lot of things work
- Fate/stay night [Unlimited Blade Works] | L27 - kid thrown into the middle of a mages’ war he’s never heard of
無人惑星サヴァイヴ - it’s about a group of teenagers who have crash-landed on an alien planet and need to work out how to survive. They don’t know anything really, so it’s a lot of mundane struggle over, say, how to light a fire and how to build shelter.
It’s not a 10/10 show or anything, but it did form a very large part of the first proper Anki deck I ever made because it covers so much ground vocabulary-wise in a pretty simple way.
Gokusen - Yakuza lingo, has both anime and live drama versions
I think it’ll be useful for you since there’s a lot of variation into the character talking both in “normal” lingo as well as some stereotypical “Yakuza” lingo
The way of the househusband also has some yakuza lingo though less so, also has both an anime and live drama
Samurai 7 is an anime with some samurai lingo if you want, it’s based on an old movie that’s considered a classic called the seven samurai, but the lingo in the movie itself is on the more difficult side since it includes a lot of explanations that have to do with the history of the time and etc (plus, it’s 3 hours long lol) so I recommend only the anime and the movie if you feel like trying extra hard
Rurouni Kenshin has both anime and live movies
There’s a cute live drama called 猫侍 that I honestly recommend
GTO has a lot of that type of lingo (though I don’t like that series that much so I can only reference but I won’t “recommend” lol)
Will update with more if I remember more
Thanks for the ideas.
I had a feeling that a lot of Isekai would meet the criteria. I have been planning to watch Re:ゼロ eventually. Adding 灰と幻想のグリムガル to my list. I am just trying to keep my Isekai consumption in check so that I don’t get tired of it too quickly.
Already seen the main Fate routes but could rewatch now that I am language learning.
Do you need to watch CCS first in order to watch this? Is the manga better? I haven’t read or seen anything from clamp yet except ちょびっツ. So I might save that for later.
Higashi no Eden fits to a t imo
And it’s interesting so that’s a plus!
There’s also tasogare otome x amnesia which has to do with finding out the story behind the character with amnesia (read the manga, not sure of the anime is good but the story fits your description)
To aru majutsu no index
Tsubasa chronicle technically plays a bit into the amnesia trope
One week friends (read the manga and it fits your trope)
An anime called amnesia also fits lol
Some of the darker than black arcs also fit
Also some of the arcs in xam’d lost memories
Need to ask my friend, possibly violet ever garden, will update
Technically Yu Gi Oh kinda fits too
Another super shounen ish anime that fits is zatch bell (technically he’s still a child but he didn’t lose the memories because he’s a child, he legit got amnesia in an incident in the plot)
Just remembered that technically dimension w also has amnesia themes, but I watched it so long ago I don’t remember much about it to be honest
edit:
completely forgot about ef ~ a tale of memories
I just found that one like an hour ago! I think my google search was something along the lines of “anime where the protagonist has no idea what is going on” lol.
I know it’s a really vague concept and there are tons of anime that fit. Like you could make cases for shows like Steins;Gate and AOT if you really wanted to. But I think that’s a little too broad for what I am going for.
The learning appeal to ちょびっツ, which inspired this search is that she is literally so clueless that she is asking what random words mean all the time.
Thanks for all the suggestions you listed! I need to go through and do some research now to see which ones I might like.
This part you unfortunately won’t find much, but in terms of “forgetting everything completely”, then higashi no Eden is the closest I can think of on the top of my head
Short answer: You don’t need to know anything about CCS. There is one episode that is specifically an homage to CCS, but you’re not missing anything if you don’t know. The manga is better, but the anime stands on its own well enough
long answer
The manga is definitely better in many ways, but it’s also hard in a way that the anime is not. That said S1 is a straight, solid, and authentic adaptation, iirc. S2 suffered bc of censorship stuff, and then there’s Tokyo Revelations, which got back on track. There’s an irrelevant filler movie or two that you can watch if you feel like it. Also there are some great OST and insert songs, written by Yuki Kajiura, to enjoy in the anime. 風の町へ is especially beautiful
There may be some very occasional “who is this” moments later on bc you haven’t read xxxHolic (the two manga ran concurrently and have a few tie-ins), but it’s CLAMP so you’ll probably be confused by then anyway and it won’t be such a huge deal (I had not read it, when I first watched)
Yayyy, this is making me wanna rewatch it, or try picking up the novels again
Just a note: in case you consider it, Fate/Zero is way harder than ufotable UBW, and probably DEEN (been years since I watched).
Haha you quote captured one of my typos before I could fix it. I swear reading in Japanese is making me worse at spelling in English.
Yeah I think it is too specific of a concept. The closest thing is probably children’s content. Stuff like Yotsuba honestly has a similar style of “character experiencing the world for the first time and learning new things”. I just get bored with too much kids stuff.
