Seeking TV/Movie Recommendations Thread 📽📺

phrasing it like that kinda helped me jog something

Nichijou also has some of this trope, I feel like there’s other things but can’t recall right now, but the “experiencing the world for the first time” is very much a thing yesyes
in robots and in “people who lived in caged environments” for example

it feels like I have something on the tip of my tongue but I can’t recall completely

as I’m writing this I remembered another one into this trope lol
DearS

same trope I just remembered - Heavens Lost Property
take into account that this trope heavily plays into fanservice kind of stuff (both DearS and Heavens Lost Property are heavy fanservice shows)

Japanese regularly makes me question my English skills :joy: Also it’s made me hate typing in English on my phone. Typing in JP is soooo much easier

Does anyone know of any nature documentaries?

NHK-E had an easy to understand series called しぜんとあそぼ, 15 min episodes, each introducing some animal, usually ones that live in Japan. There maybe some stuff on YouTube based on it.

Not sure where you might find it but apparently Sir David Attenborough documentaries such as Planet Earth series 1, 2 & 3 as well as Blue Planet etc have all been dubbed in Japanese. One of my penpals watches then, I think on Netflix, and one of the language exchange partners has mentioned them as well.

I have watched a few English nature documentaries in Japanese on Netflix UK as well.

Ohhh good call!! I didn’t think of watching them dubbed! It’s been long enough that I’ve seen them that it’ll probably just feel new again :joy:

I know Blue Planet is on BBC iPlayer as well but not sure if that’s available outside of the UK and not sure if it’s dubbed either. The DVDs do not have an option that I can see for changing the audio language.

It is supposed to be available on Discovery + and Apple TV apparently but I don’t see it on Discovery + in the UK nor do I see an option of changing the language. I don’t have Apple TV though.

I’m kinda limited on my streaming services because I just pay for Netflix and Disney+, the others I have are part of my free TV service for working at Sky and most of the Sky stuff is only in English unless it’s live on a foreign language channel.

unfortunately I’m very aware on how UK limited blue planet is, it devistated me when it came out (until I pirated it of course lol)

Yeah, BBC doesn’t want their shows being widely available in order to make people to buy a TV license. They haven’t quite understood that most people will find a way around that if there is one. :joy: I’m curious though, I might need to ask my Japanese penpal what they managed to watch it on as they did mention they had never heard it in English until they bought the DVD.

When we moved back to the US I went back and forth with the TV license people for so long telling them I left the country. They were so convinced that I was trying to get TV for free. :unamused:

Yeah, I’ve had to tell them multiple times I don’t watch live Tv. Like I literally only watch stuff in Japanese or the occasional film in English (my actual TV hasn’t been on for TV in about 6 years, only ever for the consoles and I watch Netflix only occasionally, never anything Live).

By the way, for anyone interested - I think you can watch those for free here.

Could I get a recommendation for a youtuber that discusses manga or dramas? Not necessarily in an informative way (although that’s fine too). I’d mostly just like to hear someone excitedly discuss something I like.

Most of the videos I find are text only, no speaking.

The number of otherwise great Japanese YouTube channels that require me to read are way too high.

I get that a lot of people are uncomfortable putting their faces or even voices on camera, but please, for the love of god, do not make me watch the screen for 100% of your video.

Yeaaah, even if they used a still image and voiced over it, I would be so happy! There was one I saw that did just that but with an AI voice. Unfortunately I find robovoice so unpleasant to listen to.

I don’t have any recommendations, but if you haven’t done that already: Sounds like you might also be wanting to look into podcasts.

How about this one https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLTFQ23y9JWVKGcN2RsRz0eALUjVC6yCLH
Two guys discuss several drama series, you don’t see them, though.

One of the first that came up when I searched for 「ユーチューブ マンガとドラマのお勧め」

Thanks I’ll check them out!

Anyone have recs for slice of life anime? Preferably all girl cast but not required. I like stuff like K-on, Non Non Biyori, Azumanga Daioh etc.

Here’s my anilist for reference - majority of stuff on this is list is from before I started to learn jp but I would prefer to watch something completely new than rewatch something. AniList
