I’m copying over the weekly poll format from WaniKani so there’s a little more flair when a new week has started. I will also try to post these Friday night Eastern U.S. time so it’s available on time for people further east.

My notes for week 1:

  • It took me a bit to figure out the handwritten text in the bottom right panel of page 3. It looked like a カ with a 半濁点 and エ, which I knew wasn’t right, but eventually I realized it was 加工 from the context.
  • 余 (よ) is an archaic first person pronoun
  • 汝 (なんじ) is an archaic second person pronoun (which I actually learned from this manga years ago and remembered the reading)
  • The し in 封印されし is just an archaic inflection for past tense similar to た in modern Japanese. It just makes the phrase sound fancier.

EDIT: Oh, also some information for those unfamiliar with Manga Time Kirara. These first color pages are 書き下ろし for the volume, meaning they weren’t part of the original publication. That’s why they don’t make sense continuity-wise before the first chapter and why it includes characters that may not get introduced until later in the volume.

Thx for the notes. I’ve read a few pages, but not enough to comment. Probably will get to the chapter around Tuesday or so.

I picked it up from カードキャプターさくら S1 | L20 and have always thought it’s a very fun word

It has a bunch of different readings apparently (not sure what’s used when):

Tfw when circles are squares :joy:

This book turned out to be a tad harder than I anticipated :joy: Especially color pages, chapter 1 was okey-ish.

Curse

It took me forever to understand the meaning of 月四万生活  Is it a common way to phrase it?

And it actually features my favorite word from this chapter - 局地的.

For it was the Persona 5 game, although in the European version it is impossible to turn on the Japanese subtitles, so I only heard this word and never saw a kanji (or saw and forgot). Nice to meet you, “汝”.

I’m not reading the manga, but I’m curious seeing this. How should it be understood? “[A four-person family] living off of ¥40,000/month”?

I understand it like that, yes

I can’t help but think of ルリドラゴン 1 | L21 with the “I suddenly grew horns” setup - tho it’s played very differently

Not too much to say so far, since the story hasn’t picked up yet. Humor isn’t grabbing me too much (might just be my mood tho). I had to use Google lens for 80% of the strips, so I can definitely see why the L35. I can’t say the prologue color section felt very relevant, but at least I have a reference for character name & details. Also the scan quality for the 漢字 is occasionally really rough (闇 for example)

Chapter 1

Imagine waking up, finding out you’re part demon or w/e, and then your mom asking you to kill some young girl so you can be less poor :open_mouth:

Lol at their 邪神像 being used as a door stopper

Cool that they addressed this

Love the mutual obliviousness

Amusing

What’s バネにして mean?

Probably the third definition on jisho: springboard, impetus

So basically use this as an opportunity / starting point.

My order came in today so I started reading immediately. First chapter started off pretty good! I feel like I have a good feel for the dynamics already, the premise is fun and the drawings are cute. Looking forward to finding it more.

Sorry if you mentioned this somewhere before, @seanblue; is the story complete in 2 volumes?

Nice to have you join.

Nope. The manga is ongoing and has 6 volumes so far. It was on hiatus for a while, so there hasn’t been a new volume in over 3 years. (I think it’s getting new chapters now though.)

Not much to say about chapters 2 and 3. I thought chapter 3 was a little more interesting. It also had this one really weird phrase in panel 1 of page 33 that I had to google since it wasn’t in my dictionary.

The manga certainly does start slowly though. I do like Shamiko though and how she flips between super weak and awkward to trying to be tough with おのれ and 貴様 talk. I think we learn more about how Momo thinks too, but we need more time with her.

I thought I’d seen 2 volumes on Natively but not sure what exactly I saw there then. :joy: Thanks! I still have a month left in Japan so may pick up some more volumes if I like it enough going forward.

Chapter 2

I like the clash between inept evil hero and helpful enemy were getting! That panel where Shami cried onto and over the bottom border on p25 was a nice tough, too. I do hope we’ll get to see some happy and a bit more capable sides of her as well though!

A phrase I looked up

ゆく河の流れは絶えずして、しかも、もとのみずにあらず⋯

Particularly, I failed to parse by myself もとのみずに… part. One Kanji switches in, and the sentence makes sense.

Otherwise, I might not search in web browser to see its source.

But discovering the horn is indeed Ruri vibe. (And the tail :cat2: is fun and has its uses.)

Nice! I’d a feeling that it was a poem I’d seen before but didn’t feel like looking it up at the time. Thanks for sharing!

Chapter 4 was a little better, but took me like 30 minutes to get through.

Chapter 4 questions and spoilers

I don’t quite know when the 懸賞の趣味 that the mother is talking about is. It sounds like something she’s been wasting money on (which is already weird given their small budget) in hopes of winning a prize. But it doesn’t sound quite like a lottery… At the end she says 当たらなかったら切手泥棒なんです, which implies that it’s not a guaranteed prize, but some kind of raffle. I don’t know, the whole conversation is a bit odd to me.

At the bottom left of page 36, anyone know what ガイアがよあけます is supposed to mean?

And top left of page 37 is おとなしくおおさめやがれです I think, but I don’t know what that means either. Is the おおさめ actually just おさめ that’s been extended for some reason? Looks like 収める can mean “to accept a gift/money”, so maybe that? But then in the next panel she’s still holding out the money, so maybe not… Oh, she’s telling Momo to accept the money. I think that’s it.

I like the bottom left panel of page 39. The demon girl has two demons on her shoulder, one of which is a supposed magical girl / light clan member. Shamiko is too pure to be a demon.

For some reason I was expecting 炭水化物 to be like carbonated drinks or something, but nope it’s carbohydrates. Guess that makes sense too though.

The ending is kinda funny, how Shamiko still yells at Momo even though Shamiko bought the drink mostly because of Anri.

炭酸飲料 is for drinks. I had a similar “ohhhh yeah, guess that makes sense” reaction, when I first encountered that word.

It’s cool seeing words like that in JP, cuz like I superficially know what carbs/carbohydrates (or other things) are, but like seeing the kanji makes me have to think consciously about what they actually are/what the word actually means
