Discussion ground rules

  • Any spoilers, for the current chapters must be behind spoilers or detail curtains. When we get further in you don’t need to hide details that were revealed in previous chapters.
  • Always mention where you are in the book when discussing, ideally by chapter so people reading different versions have a clear point of reference.
  • Feel free to read ahead if it’s exciting! But please refrain from spoiling ahead of the appropriate week
  • If you have a question about grammar, vocab, cultural things, etc - ask! That can be part of the discussion too and I’m sure some folks would be happy to help.
  • Even if you don’t read the chapter(s) in time, you are still encouraged to post in the thread for that reading once you have finished it. I advise not reading ahead in the threads as you may see spoilers.
Are you joining us for Week 1?
  • I’m reading along
  • I’m reading along, but at my own pace
  • I’m just following the discussion

Week 1

So I had some extra commute time today, and dived right into the book as I was curious to start. The prologue felt quite difficult to me, perhaps because it uses some complex words right from the start. I had the feeling I might struggle a bit with the book. It also felt long, but I think that’s because I have been reading books with a lot of dialogue, so the pages feel shorter… once I got into chapter 1, even though there were a lot of descriptions, I think I started getting used to the style, so the reading was more fluid. I was able to finish it in a day (about 40 minutes I’d say), which is the speed I was taking for the IBC books in Wanikani (~15 pages, similar natively level) so the difficulty level feels fine for me.

In terms of story, the prologue was nice but felt a bit disconnected from the story (which is intentional I take). From the first chapter, I also felt a sense of “I’m unsure what the plot will be” as it only described the online world, but I started getting more and more into the story as the chapter continued. I’m finding it interesting so far.

I think the part that surprised me the most was that you could to business/administration (such as tax filing) in OZ. Talk about useful, I wonder if it goes faster then in real life…

I agree, I found the prologue super disorientating! I was expecting this to be an easier read, but actually a lot of bizarre imagery and unusual terms made it feel harder, despite not having super complex sentence structure etc

This was definitely challenging for me too, and on top of that it always takes at least a few chapters for me to get into a new book. I feel like I need to try to speed through and finish at least one of my two other current LNs to free up brain space for this one!
