Discussion ground rules

  • Any spoilers, for the current chapters must be behind spoilers or detail curtains. When we get further in you don’t need to hide details that were revealed in previous chapters.
  • Always mention where you are in the book when discussing, ideally by chapter so people reading different versions have a clear point of reference.
  • Feel free to read ahead if it’s exciting! But please refrain from spoiling ahead of the appropriate week
  • If you have a question about grammar, vocab, cultural things, etc - ask! That can be part of the discussion too and I’m sure some folks would be happy to help.
  • Even if you don’t read the chapter(s) in time, you are still encouraged to post in the thread for that reading once you have finished it. I advise not reading ahead in the threads as you may see spoilers.
Are you joining us for Week 2?
  • I’m reading along
  • I’m reading along, but at my own pace
  • I’m just following the discussion

Chapter 2

Nana being told that buying food on your way home is nothing special. She looks like a kid being told Santa Clause isn’t real. I kinda feel bad for her. Mafuyu is such a meanie.

Not sure why the middle bubble has thinner font. Maybe to express meekness or just that it’s a different speaker. They really should be more explicit, but from context I guess it’s Koharu.

I think it’s kinda interesting Nana is suddenly addressing Minori with さん. I guess she is (jokingly) addressing her more formally as for a more apologetic tone.

onomatopoeia

すっぱり

Is an onomatopoeia meaning “without hesitation”

ずるずる

Dragging a large or heavy item

しゅん

Wasn’t in my dictionary, but I’m pretty sure it means becoming dispirited or disappointed.

Overall, I enjoyed how snarky Mafuyu was.

Some more spoilery thoughts as I’m rereading this:

whole series, all 3 volumes

I’m surprised how strong Mafuyu comes on to Koharu that early. “Jokingly“ telling Koharu to come into her arms (but notice she doesn’t actually cling to her herself, she doesn’t have the guts. That will come up later again). “Jokingly“ saying she wants to live with her.

Chapter 2 Thoughts

The fact that Mafuyu was going to leave when she heard how long it was going to take to get to Nana’s house. Nana is a bit of jokester I see. Find it funny she only decided to go when Haru said she wanted to hang out with her.

Wasn’t expecting for Nana and Minori to live together. Love how Mafuyu was getting on Nana’s case about helping around the apartment. Hopefully Minori can help her learn how to use a washing machine.

Today I Learned

ボロイ - big money, cushy (like living a cushy lifestyle) [maybe even fancy or swanky could work for this]
無人販売所(むじんはんばいじょ)- vending machine (seen it called a 自販機 or a 自販売機 but I’ve never seen it called this before)
回し方 - From the context it made sense she was talking about turning on the washing machine but found it interesting that you can use the verb 回す for stuff like this (even means to start up an engine).

I think Nana added the さん could also be her seeing Minori as an expert in chores.

Maybe this can mean vending machine. But look to images with that word. It’s just a shelf with some farmers produce and a money box. There is no actual “machine” and nothing to prevent people from just stealing. It’s very 田舎, which is why Mafuyu was amazed by this. She probably has never seen a 無人販売所 in her live. Certainly not in Tokyo.

Ah I see.

無人販売所

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. Kind of reminds me of those lockers with books in them.

Yeah, that kind of thing would be a rare to see in the big city. Really shows how far out in the countryside Nana’s hometown is.
