Spoilers should always be hidden using spoiler blur.
When discussing a specific section, please mention where you are in the book, ideally by chapter so people reading different versions have a clear point of reference.
Feel free to read ahead if it’s exciting, but please refrain from spoiling ahead of the appropriate week.
If you have a question about grammar, vocab, cultural things, etc - ask! That’s a welcome part of the discussion too, and other readers will be happy to help.
Even though it’s now the hectic point in the year for my job, I’ve managed to keep up with the club. This week’s reading was pretty easy and I’m hoping that continues. Seems like the movie follows pretty faithfully to the first novel so far.
They are called 傍点 (ぼうてん) and they are used to emphasise a word in the text. They are similar to using italics in English. There are a number of different forms that can be used including the dots you’ve seen in manga, and these ones that look more like a comma.
In this case it’s the word こつ that’s being emphasised.
I have finished the book! I burned through this about 60% using audible with the loaned book, and had to finish reading it manually to return it tomorrow. Whew.
Finished the week’s reading. I continue to find not a lot to remark on since it’s tracking pretty close to what I remember from the last time I watched the movie a while back.
Just finished this week today - it was a bit longer than I expected, but fortunately since the book is around a good level for me, it’s not too hard to read and enjoy the story. I do come across a few words that are new for me - it’s always good to learn something new.
I’ve only watched the movie once as a child, and barely remember anything about it to be honest. So it’s been quite a refreshing read, and it just feels like a new story. I felt bad for Kiki not feeling welcome by the townspeople, but I’m happy she found the owner of the bread store at the end of the chapter. I’m looking forward to seeing how it will develop and who she will meet next chapter.
I have some comments but it is on the overall book and story so it would be riddled with spoilers. But, by the time this schedule is complete I may have forgotten everything. I need the last Week’s book reading thread to be posted… At a very general and high level, with regard to the book compared to the movie (so double-spoiler?), this book is focused on Kiki’s coming of age and independence, but from my distant memory the movie sets the independence aside for her first crush/boyfriend…? . So I want to watch the movie again now while the book is fresh in my mind.
