  • Spoilers should always be hidden using spoiler blur.
  • When discussing a specific section, please mention where you are in the book, ideally by chapter so people reading different versions have a clear point of reference.
  • Feel free to read ahead if it鈥檚 exciting, but please refrain from spoiling ahead of the appropriate week.
  • If you have a question about grammar, vocab, cultural things, etc - ask! That鈥檚 a welcome part of the discussion too, and other readers will be happy to help.

Even though it鈥檚 now the hectic point in the year for my job, I鈥檝e managed to keep up with the club. This week鈥檚 reading was pretty easy and I鈥檓 hoping that continues. Seems like the movie follows pretty faithfully to the first novel so far.

Question. What do the little dashes above words mean? I believe sometimes I鈥檝e seen them as dots too in manga.

They are called 鍌嶇偣 (銇笺亞銇︺倱) and they are used to emphasise a word in the text. They are similar to using italics in English. There are a number of different forms that can be used including the dots you鈥檝e seen in manga, and these ones that look more like a comma.

In this case it鈥檚 the word 銇撱仱 that鈥檚 being emphasised.

I have finished the book! I burned through this about 60% using audible with the loaned book, and had to finish reading it manually to return it tomorrow. Whew.

Finished the week鈥檚 reading. I continue to find not a lot to remark on since it鈥檚 tracking pretty close to what I remember from the last time I watched the movie a while back.

Just finished this week today - it was a bit longer than I expected, but fortunately since the book is around a good level for me, it鈥檚 not too hard to read and enjoy the story. I do come across a few words that are new for me - it鈥檚 always good to learn something new.

I鈥檝e only watched the movie once as a child, and barely remember anything about it to be honest. So it鈥檚 been quite a refreshing read, and it just feels like a new story. I felt bad for Kiki not feeling welcome by the townspeople, but I鈥檓 happy she found the owner of the bread store at the end of the chapter. I鈥檓 looking forward to seeing how it will develop and who she will meet next chapter.

I have some comments but it is on the overall book and story so it would be riddled with spoilers. But, by the time this schedule is complete I may have forgotten everything. I need the last Week鈥檚 book reading thread to be posted鈥 At a very general and high level, with regard to the book compared to the movie (so double-spoiler?), this book is focused on Kiki鈥檚 coming of age and independence, but from my distant memory the movie sets the independence aside for her first crush/boyfriend鈥? . So I want to watch the movie again now while the book is fresh in my mind.
