Welcome to the new Dashboard!

Hello everybody,

no matter whether you have already peeked behind the stage for a bit, or whether this is brand-new to you: In the past 5 months (!! :exploding_head:) the Natively team around @brandon, @mathew and @nikoru have been very very busy and completely overhauled the dashboard! Now we are super excited to hear what you all think of it :hugs:

New and noteworthy features include

  • Styling, styling, styling!
  • Better layout of the dashboard so that it makes use of wide monitors
  • Broke up the huge three-in-one update dialog into three slick standalone dialogs that are better geared towards their individual use cases
  • The reading/watching history on the dashboard is now auto-filled from your sessions on top of being manually editable
  • We removed the language toggle from the dashboard - all language toggling will happen in the navigation bar going forward. As a result, we decided to always display the flag in the navigation bar
  • The hovers on the activity feed are now actually usable, their links can be clicked
  • New date pickers that help you better select partial dates (only year or only year and month, if you don’t remember exactly when you started or finished something) as well as full dates
  • New dark mode - completely overhauled styling
  • More intuitive custom tag manager with the ability to add new tags directly. Tag manipulation is simplified as well.
  • Better timezone awareness in Activitiy notifications

We hope there’s something good in it for everybody!

Please share your feedback (good and bad of course) in this thread, and we’ll follow up as soon as possible.

So excited for this!! Congrats @nikoru & @mathew! And while @nikoru gave me some credit, I mostly jumped in at the end on a few things. @mathew and @nikoru have put in so much good work here :star_struck:

In addition to all the wonderful new features, the styling & functionality is a huge overhaul of the current codebase that we feel is really great and will be rolling out across the site, page by page. Good times ahead!

Wow, so exciting to see the fruits of all the hard work!

On mobile (Pixel 8, Firefox if it matters), there seems to be horizontal placement issues. The calendar bumps out from the other elements and you can scoll horizontally, which reveals the broken footer.

Thanks! I’ve released a fix. Let me know if it’s looking better!

Much better, no horizontal scrolling now!

The only other styling weirdness I see is in the footer, there’s an extra dot between the lines of footer links, and in light mode the links at the bottom are the wrong colour.

I typically retch when a website I use daily changes its layout but this is truly fantastic. It looks great and makes it much easier to use and navigate. Exceptional work Natively team!

Oh wow that makes me so happy to hear, and I bet the others as well

@gillianfaith Thanks for the report, duly noted!

What are you expecting there though?

Oh I guess, I was like “Watched episode 12 of 12” but it was blank due to a bug

I see what that of is for… feels weird.

Do you think we should rather remove the “of” then? Isn’t it then a bit unconnected?

Maybe add a : and make it “Watched episode of:” so the space is connected to the thing down.

I’m no native, so take with a grain of salt, but I’d would have expected/used “Watched episode 12 from:”

We are planning to overhaul the activity code at some point (not a very pressing issue for us though), so I’m leaning towards deferring it until then… Would that be ok for you?

New dashboard is not displaying watchtime duration when updating. Minutes watched seem to be accounting for stats normally though

Yes, sure. It just felt odd and like a bug. I could probably even get used to it.

Hi all! I am officially living under a rock, I had no idea!!!
Congrats on the hard work! Will take a bit probably for me to get used to, but makes sense that the current reading / watching is in focus instead of being a small side column, and I’m so happy the “RECENT FORUM TOPICS” is still a thing (my one grief with Wanikani (as you probably know) is that they removed that from their page, effectively stopping the flow of incoming new people on the forum). So kuddos so far :+1:

The calendar view looks cool, I am not used to it as I don’t record my reading sessions, just the book start date and end date.
Got a bit surprised when I hovered the day however, it would be nice to see what where the books when hovering a day that has data, or a count or something, instead of that same same tooltip?

We decided to not display the reading and watching times any more going forward. Especially for reading, some people felt pressured by it and feared judgment, so they did not want to have it so prominently visible in the activity thread any more. So we decided to take it down*. As you noticed, this of course only affects the activities, the data is captured just like before and displayed in your stats and so on. Thanks for reporting though! We will revisit this decision in the Activity feed overhaul that we have on our roadmap.

(*) I think I noticed one or two activities that still mention the timings, but we’re working on it…

I see. They’re still showing up as empty parenthesis in the activity tab and in the series pages, that’s why I thought something might be wrong. Thanks for clearing it up!

I am sooo with you, and I have all sorts of ideas for a cool statistics/summary/general info tooltip! It’s just… we needed to start somewhere, and so we decided to release it with the simple tooltip for now.
But we will definitely revisit it and make it much cooler than it is now :crossed_fingers:

Ah yeah, there are currently some bits and pieces of the old and new parts not … 100% aligning, let’s put it that way  We’re trying to improve the new dashboard without spending ages on adapting the old stuff, which is a fine line that we sometimes miss :face_with_peeking_eye: Our hope is to make things better overall with each iteration :crossed_fingers:
