That’s the reference I had in mind ![]()
Later volumes are probably better. The series wouldn’t have been going for so long otherwise.
By the way, difficulty wise, I’d say it’s about level 30.

Y’all are almost making me wanna read it at this point lol
I have trouble motivating myself to read anthologies for some reason tho…

I love short story collections and anthologies and I dropped that one on the fourth story I think. It probably won’t help you with finishing one… ![]()
Yeah, I don’t think I’ll actually read it tbh, it was more of a “if this is gonna be a repeated meme now…” sorta thought. Sorta like how a part of me wants to read 汚い君, but the rest of me is “I will absolutely not do that to myself under any circumstances!!”
(no shade towards anyone who likes it, it’s just decidedly not for me, despite its apparent popularity)

I need them to come together and gestalt their way into being worth having read them all. Otherwise I’m likely to just read the best one/few and call it good.

That’s good to know. On both accounts. I have a bunch of 28-30 series on my list for the near future but I’ll maybe give it a try once I feel like that’s a comfy reading level for me.

I guess my brain wants something to indicate that they’re actually worth reading before I dive in… even impulse reading a manga or LN, there’s something to go off of, but with an anthology, I have no idea what I’d be getting into.
Maybe I should challenge myself next time I come across one tho?

I don’t know. I never read an anthology that I felt was worth it. It’s bound to have authors/stories I don’t like any way…
Honestly, I wouldn’t force it if I were you.
just for the sake of staying relevant I will update that I’ve been listening to the audiobook of " ゴーストハント"
it’s nostalgic (in the personal sense, not the writings sense lol), and it’s nice to see that the characters vibe from the animated series was there from the beginning since that was a huge factor in both plot and characters imo
the narrator isn’t that good at male voices (just like male narrators aren’t that good at female ones lol) which is a bit of a problem when there are multiple male characters at the same time (which happens quite a lot)
the only exception is probably John since he was always depicted on the more teenish/feminine-guy-side so the voice fit him + the very purposely heavy kyoto-ben (which leaves me wondering if it’s really well done or if it’s a “relatively understandable to other japanese dialects version” like they do with osaka-ben from what I understand)
other than that I have yet to notice 現在では不適切と思われる表現 nor find an actual list in case I was missing them
overall I’m only at the start but if it keeps up like it is now I suspect I will listen to the entire series lol or at the very least I want to reach my favorite story arc
now to the actual reason I wanted to write a post and didn’t know where:
@Biblio I keep telling myself that I forgot to ask so I apologize if I already did lol, is the magical boys list a “my recommendations for magical boys” or “generally any magical boys list”
cause if it’s the latter I have things to add lmao

I read this and thought it was in reference to the book you are reading, somehow. But upon closer inspection, I guess not ![]()
Oh well, it can just stay in my wishlist anyway.

doing ghost hunting with magical boys does sound like something you can find in Japanese media
![]()
Right? I don’t know what it says about me or Japanese media that it didn’t seem particularly strange at face value.
I might give it a try at some point. Curious to hear your thoughts, if/when you finish it
Wrote up a short review for the book:

A good start that will likely never see an ending - Overall: 3/5, Language Learning: 5/5, Entertainment: 3/5
Long story short, it’s a high-level manga that’s not likely to get any sort of resolution. I enjoyed what I read, though nothing really immediately wow’ed me.

Well I went ahead and started reading NEW GAME!アンソロジーコミック 1, cuz I accidentally bought it ages ago. Have to say I’m pretty underwhelmed. I can see why it might be appealing to some… but it’s all just kinda flat to me. I’m halfway through, and it’s relatively easy reading for me, so I’ll probly see it through to the end.

This was quite difficult for a manga in my opinion: no furigana, many, many uncommon and/or unusual words, names with rare kanji, and lots of domain-specific “spirit world” vocabulary.
Got it… doesn’t sound like a very productive read for me rn. Good to know.
It’s horror, and unlike most Japanese books labeled ‘horror’ that I’ve read thus far, this one really does feel like the Western understanding of the genre.
Huh, can you develop?
May was a bit of a slow reading month but I finished https://learnnatively.com/book/58b185c486/, I did some rereads of other books, and read some nonfiction in english for a while.
I am now reading https://learnnatively.com/book/39ba16191e/ , I watched the some of the anime some years back and quite enjoyed the twisted story, so I’m excited to get in to the 原作!
I finished 我が友、スミス | L30?? and enjoyed it! In short, the story is about a woman who begins weightlifting and enters a body building competition and all the preparation she has to do for it. The preparation comes with an element of learning how to emphasize femininity on stage and approving physical appearance besides just how the muscles look, and the book dug into that dichotomy in a very interesting way. I’m glad I read it!
The narrators workouts and preparations were written in an extremely detailed way that was borderline dry at times, but it somehow matched the steady feeling of working out and improving over time, so I appreciated it. It’s a golden vocabulary resource for anyone who is into working out or wants to talk about it/go to the gym in Japan!
Now I will probably get back to some of my neglected book club reads…![]()
I think you might have tagged the wrong biblio ![]()
omg
