I’m always super interested in main characters with seemingly debilitating physical issues like blindness, but they don’t really come up that often, and/or are cured relatively quickly in the story. Could you spoil me on if she gets her eyesight back?
It is uncommon indeed, which is one of the reasons why I was happy to find this series.
She does at the very end of the book (which was a bit disappointing and why I hesitate to continue with the series; at this point she is just your average overpowered isekai-er). For most of the book, she can use echolocation by spreading magic in the environment and feeling it BUT it causes 魔物 to target her (because she has tasty tasty magic), so, once she learns that problem, she stops doing using it except when she is in a safe place. She can also just passively “look” at magic in the environment. Since all living things have some magic, she can at least see where they are. It’s unclear to me why she can see magic through walls, yet her magical echolocation does bounce on them… (but I will just ignore that issue)
Not so uncommon, I think. This year there were already two series
-
ATRI -My Dear Moments- S1 which features a male lead with missing lower leg.
-
ゆびさきと恋々 S1 which features a female lead that can almost not hear.
Both are romances. And both do not get physically healed.
雨夜の月 | L24 as well. One main character is severely hearing impaired, and they’re not the only character with a disability shown either. Author really did their research on the whole thing, to a really surprising degree… not just in how it affects her, but also family friends, school, etc.
Two-three out of whatever gazillion things came out at the same time is what I would call “uncommon”
(Although you are pointing at anime series and I don’t know much about that)
Plus, if they are romance, they are probably in a realistic setting, so not getting healed isn’t surprising in that context.
Edit: and actually, since they are not fantasy, you are saying that a whooping zero (0) relevant new series came out this year
Did that “I’ll just read a bit before I go to sleep…whoops it’s half past midnight already?” thing again last night, finishing 小さいおうち | L40 … (I still have the little “conversation with the author” thing to go so technically I haven’t marked it read yet, but I’m done with the story itself.)
Started to learn Korean. Did 한 입만 | L8?? which is a simple book. Was tough as a complete beginner, but cute.
FYI, there’s a separate section for each language. Here’s the thread for Korean:
Ah sorry, on the Japanese side - it is still Naruto. About to finish up volume 32. Planning on doing Soul Eater soon - given it is nearly Halloween!
I did the same once I got into the last 1/4 of that book.
Finished vol 32, then did 33 and 34. My physical copy is damaged by perfume - horrible horrible perfume - completely soaked into the pages of multiple vols, this volume was the worst so far and I decided to do it in one sitting. Sadly most of these are 1st editions and they are damaged.
Would activated charcoal or another archive technique work on them?
I once got a second hand book that stunk so badly of mildew that I couldn’t read it. I looked up a bunch of ways that archivists use to get out smell. I eventually just propped mine open next to the air purifier for a month and it was fine afterwards. But it was both hardcover and we have (multiple) air purifiers (hooray for fire seasons ).
hmmm I will try it - the books bindings were damaged so badly that the perfume ruined the glue and it broke up on one - but other volumes are so soaked that the pages are discolored. Had to be an entire bottle just leaked out on them all. Extremely potent to me. The pages themselves are soaked through, but its tough to read them like this. I tried to google how to get perfume out and it was mostly baking soda and bagging them for a few days - but I haven’t tried it yet.
Where did you buy them from that they came like that?
Ebay. I usually have no problem because I am careful - but oh well. I’ll still read it.
That’s a shame. I’ve only bought a few series from ebay but never had anything like that happen. Biggest problem is that you can’t practically return items from Japan because of the shipping cost (assuming you don’t live in Japan).
I started reading 聖なる黒夜 | L35?? as my “longest book in TBR” for the bingo. I’m only 20-ish pages in and I already hate the main character.
“That may sound sexist, but women shouldn’t be at [workplace], they are just distracting the boys”
Don’t worry, it doesn’t sound sexist, it is sexist. But sure, get rid of the boys. Problem solved.
Also, in the same internal monologue, we get a description of the woman he is dating.
いい女だ。飛び抜けて美人ではないが、髪が綺麗だ。
I won’t detail his thoughts on their relationship, but man, I can see why you are divorced.
I hope the tone or something will change, because I can’t see myself going through 650+ pages of that. (And it’s only the 上 volume)
(I can’t remember why I added it to my wishlist, but I just saw that it was graded 1* here That doesn’t bode well)
I started the book and stopped maybe a hundred or so pages in but I don’t even remember the sexism it’s pretty par for the course with Tough Manly Cop Dramas (with pulpiness and age both upping the likelihood).
I stopped it because my reading mood has been weird this year, rather than disliking it.
It’s supposed to be a fairly spicy BL though, which is maybe how it got on a list.
I don’t really read much in that category, but I can see it being the reason.
Oh, okay? That would definitely put stuff on my list. I guess I will also give it a 100 pages or so as well and decide if I drop it or not.
I loved that book and devoured both volumes within 3-4 days. Don’t think any of the characters are supposed to be particularly likable at all…quite the opposite. One for the lovers of despicable characters and messiness. I think the ending is either something that the reader could love or hate so that may be why the rating is low, but for me it was solidly 4 stars if not 5. And yes, BL awaits you!
