Yeah, I’ve read a portion of the first chapter and I didn’t find her annoying lol. I’ve also taken a peek at the manga and I understand. I was bullied heavily in school, and didn’t always tell my mother, so I do understand that feeling of not always wanting to go and being traumatized. I went to school because I liked learning, but I did my best to steer clear of extra events to the point that my mom found out I had an 8th grade dance from somebody else. She made me go and I cried for a majority of it lmao
I don’t find the MC’s reaction to be farfetched. Especially since I don’t really view something in the lines of “harmless bullying.” Bullying is bullying 
and the affects that it has on each person will be different. Everyone’s limit is different and everyone’s trauma responses are different. But considering that she’s a middle school girl, I think that the inner voice feeling that way sounds about right because those who haven’t experienced it or those who are beyond that point in their life probably find it to be a bit melodramatic lol
If I understand the premise of the novel correctly, there’s a reason why all of the kids aren’t in school, right? I’m assuming that there will be some point that I’m screaming at them for making dumb decisions, too, lol. It’s like when I’m watching a spy movie and I’m screaming because they’re about to fall into the enemy’s trap “DONT DO IT”

I had the same issues. I thought the story was good but couldn’t relate to the main character. I think I only tolerated it because it was in Japanese. I liked the side characters more and they felt more realistic to me.

same, to the point of wanting to do stupid things to myself, which is why I wouldn’t even have considered what she described as bullying. Kids laugh at each other. Kids don’t always want to be friends. Bullying was a whole other level of awful for me. But it never even occured to me not to go to school. And I mean, her parents take her out of that school and put her into a “nice” school. Therapy would be even better, but well… it’s Japan. 
I guess it just really comes down to not being able to relate to her. 
On the other hand, it’s surprisingly easy and thus, despite the length, will be a quick read. (famous last words 
)

I think this is a common occurrence. I don’t know if this happens in Japan IRL but at least I saw instances like this a few times in media before, with the recent two in 告白 and Judgement (video game series).
How is it compared to oregairu? I’ve been planning to get into easy light novels as a change of pace from heavy adult books but haven’t found one yet.

I think it’s probably of a similar difficulty. Kagami feels a bit easier atm (I am only ~100 pages in, though), but oregairu has fewer unique words and kanji.

I’m currently reading 夜カフェ with my bookclub, but I’ll probably be reading Kagami soon after that (or また、同じ夢を見ていた, I haven’t decided which.) in the brief section i had read of the manga, I was shocked to see that there was a school available for kids who weren’t comfortable going to a regular school. Were those kids the same ones in the fantasy world with her? or will we never know because she doesn’t end up going to the school? …yeah, Japan and mental health…sometimes physical health lol. I got diagnosed when something when I was over there and my uni was like “sucks to suck, deal with it”

Omg I haven’t heard of that in forever. I remember watching the anime, but I should definitely add it to my list to read! Now I feel accomplished for adding another book to my wishlist lol.
I read the version split into two parts. Took me about 2.5 weeks in total, with the second part taking me only 5 days. Considering the length of the book, that was definitely the fastest I’ve read a book in Japanese. (For reference, a volume of 本好き takes me 1.5-2.5 weeks depending on what else I’m doing. That’s the series I read most consistently and most quickly.)

Single volume edition is about 550 pages. The font in the split version must be huge given how many more (total) pages they are.

I read the single volume version. The font wasn’t particularly small, the book itself was large (which is standard for hardcovers).

you absolutely DEVOURED that book. This makes me want to hurry up and get to it. I was wondering which was the better purchase, the two split version or the entire one. I couldn’t figure out if there was a difference
lmao I got told to quit complaining and go home when I pointed out how my school was not helpful for people with medical issues. I was going home, but I could barely walk and they didnt want to help me get to the airport lol. Petty is as petty comes
VEEERRYYYY THICK. Seeing it kinda scared me. Idk how large the font is in the original single volume, though. I can only imagine how long the translation would be in English, considering how much can be written in Japanese in a smaller space thanks to kanji

In my experience it doesn’t always work out that way. For example the Harry Potter books were longer in Japanese by page count compared to the English ones and I had hard covers of both. ロクヨン on the other hand was two petite paperbacks in Japanese and one absolutely massive English book, but the font in the English translation was much bigger so hard to directly compare.

There were a few word changes for some reason, but nothing of consequence. It’s cheaper to buy the split version compared to the original in digital form at least. If you’re buying the physical version, I’d recommend the original version just because it looks really cool!

Ngl, I really like the cover on the original. The cover is what drew me to it at first and then when I read the description, my first thought was “this might take a while, but it sounds GOOD.” If there’s an audiobook version of that, I think it would be fun for me to read along, but we’ll see. I need to hurry up and read it before they turn it into an Angel Beats-esque anime.

There is an audiobook, which has a distinct voice actor for each role, with the main character also doing narration. I haven’t actually listened to it in full since I did just read the book, but I’ll probably listen sometime next year. It’s really well made from the parts I sampled.
By the way, I’d recommend against listening to the sample of the audiobook, as it has content even late into the second book in the split version. I don’t know if it would spoil anything this much out of context, but I do find it a bit risky personally. I did crop the first couple minutes if you’d like to hear that instead of the official sample.
They also did announce an anime film, though I have low expectations given typical anime film runtime. I’d be more optimistic if it was going to be a series.
