Oh god I understood nothing of what he said The subtitles are mandatory.
Ca va pas.
I just watched a really interesting YouTube vid about some research as to why mosquitos prefer to bite some people over others.
Watching 鋼の錬金術師 S1 | L27, which along with .hack //SIGN | L27 was my favorite anime, back in high school/college! Surprisingly, it’s been a lot easier than I expected! For better or worse, they never officially split it into seasons… so I’m on ep 25/51 rn
Also: 結束バンドLIVE-恒星- | L30?? ! I got the special edition blu-ray last month. Disc 1 is the live concert (with optional commentary from the VAs, and from the director), Disc 2 is ぼっち・ざ・とーく LIVE + guitar hero documentary & more songs, and I forget what Disc 3 is. I’ve watched most of disc 1 (without commentaries), and am halfway through disc 2. First music blu-ray/dvd I’ve purchased in years, and definitely a purchase I’m happy about!! It’s making me wanna watch ぼっち・ざ・ろっく! | L27 again, but I’ll settle for reading the manga for now.
Found an interesting YouTube channel that interviews JP musicians/bands, and has vids with EN or JP sub options:
I stopped reading about two weeks ago, as I wanted to have time to make the tax declaration, which had to be done before end of the year.
But as you could well guess, instead of using the time for worldly matters I instead doubled the time in which I watched TV
With the running series slowly trickling out some TV stations use it to provide binge-watch sessions of old series, while others show shopping shows. Currently I’m re-watching 宇崎ちゃんは遊びたい! S2, 宇宙よりも遠い場所 S1 as I like them and 見える子ちゃん S1 as it is available and not bad, either.
But I also watched the first two dubbed HP movies and plan to continue this long weekend with two more of them. Further, I watched some horror movies like e.g. the Japanese dubbed Korean made 呪呪呪/死者をあやつるもの which was better than I thought.
These 人をあやつる theme seems to be really liked in Japan. I first met it in Ghost in the Shell → puppet master, then in コップクラフト and now again. I doubt that this will be the last time.
And finally I made the tax declaration just barely in time. To get back into the mood of reading I started with some manga and am currently reading 葬送のフリーレン 1 which is as good as the series. BTW: you can read the first two volumes for free until 2024/01/05 on Renta!
I finished ハガレン 2003, with mixed feelings, and am started watching 鋼の錬金術師 2009 (Brotherhood).
I watched ハガレン 2003 very extensively/in a somewhat どうでもいい manner bc I’ve seen it at least 3 or 4 times already, and didn’t have clickable subs. So I wanted to see how I’d do.
Otoh, I’ve only seen Brotherhood once, and it’s on Crunchyroll, so I can very easily look things up (via kitsunekko subs + Jimaku Player + Yomichan) or compare to the EN subs. So I’ll take my time with it I guess.
(Btw for anyone interested, kitsunekko actually has JP/EN simultaneous subs for Brotherhood as well.)
New series 休日のわるものさん, a cool comedy. It starts with something like the following. Don’t nail me on the exact wording, though, as he says it throughout the show slightly differently: 私は悪組織の幹部である。仕事は人類の全滅だ…けど、今日は休日だ。Then he goes into the zoo to watch pandas
I watched the first episode of Death Note.
It was very nostalgic. It wasn’t too difficult but I’m aware that the difficulty climbs once the police and L get involved.
I’m going through the pre built deck on jpdb so that is helpful too
I also watched the first Harry Potter movie in japanese dub a couple of days ago and it was good practice, but I’d forgotten how different the books and movies are so I felt irritated while watching it I don’t think I’ll watch the others.
Keeping up w/ various seasonals… wanted to give a shout-out to ゆびさきと恋々, which is so far really amazing!!
Current Season:
- 薬屋のひとりごと S1 | L32 - continues to be amazing
- 俺だけレベルアップな件 S1 | L25?? - cautiously optimistic
- 葬送のフリーレン S1 | L28 - still enjoying
- 弱キャラ友崎くん 2nd Stage | L22 - really turned off so far. Hoping it gets better over the next few eps
Older:
- ぼっち・ざ・ろっく! S1 | L26 - amazing!!
- 後宮の烏 S1 | L30?? - reading semi-in-sync w/ novel
- けいおん! | L22 - seems decent, just started
Are you watching these with Japanese subs or no subs at all?
I’m sort of interested in watching 薬屋のひとりごと (read the first volume of the LN, but think I might like the pacing of an anime better) and 葬送のフリーレン (same reason, though I haven’t read the source material in this case). But I worry they would both be a bit challenging for me and may opt to lazily watch with English subs instead. Assuming yes to the above question, how are these difficulty-wise?
JP subs… I’m not brave enough to watch most things without subs (only if I can’t find subs or I’ve seen it twice already)
If you’ve already read the 薬屋 LN, the anime will probably be easy. The hard part of the anime is all the 後宮語, names, etc. the grammar in the novel is definitely a lot harder.
Frieren I find myself having to check vocab a lot, both for the German-esque names and fantasy type things. Otoh the speech doesn’t really get too dense or fast. Re: pacing the show starts off very, very slowly. It’s only about ep 5 that it starts to progressively pick up.
Uhh “easy” is probably an overstatement. I read one volume of the LN and found it challenging. It’s good to know that the grammar is easier in the anime (not that surprising), but the L32 isn’t reassuring.
I guess that’s why they released so many episodes at once!
I’ll decide on these later. I haven’t watched anime in a few months and don’t plan to start with either of these (if at all). I need to ease in with something easier. Currently considering rewatching カノン S1 | L21 or WHITE ALBUM 2 S1 | L24, or trying https://learnnatively.com/season/eca8eb46ac/.
Fair, but fwiw I watched all of the anime, and the novel is still the hardest thing I’ve tried to read by far. I tried one manga volume, and that felt similar to the show in difficulty (still slightly bit harder). So anyway, I think it will give you a good leg up, if you do watch it.
Have you played the VN for Kanon? If so, what did you think?
What’s the deal with White Album 2? Is there a White Album 1 that should be watched first? Or did they just slap a 2 on there for fun? Looks like it could be a good next show for me, after けいおん
There is, shown in 2009.
I haven’t. Only VNs I’ve played are Steins;Gate and Steins;Gate 0.
White Album exists but you don’t need to watch it. It’s like Final Fantasy, where each is pretty much unrelated. I never watched (or played) White Album and I had no issue when I watched White Album 2.
Well I finally discovered how to install Fate/Grand Order JP on my phone, but it’s really exhausting to read everything (and the intro portion is excruciatingly long, with no breaks, even in English). So I found 2 read-out-loud playthroughs in Japanese
めっちゃ元気 V-Tuber (Edit: ぺこら from ホロライブ… very high pitched and overexcited, but clear enunciation): https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL9jli3ZqRhJCszoRTG_lsbKJLPWMyY4os&si=Stf5Bqr6GRLSNM1N
More normal reader (less grating, but less clear enunciation): https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLECPWeq4ZO3Kyd8d1xIxfvZDK_R33fsiN&si=kOOMuriVW7Ae-9D5
If anyone else here plays, feel free to DM if you wanna friend each other (JP or EN)
Mostly been listening to beginner podcasts for my Japanese listening practice this last while, but I have picked back up on Cardcaptor Sakura season 1 and will probably finish it out this weekend.
Well on the one hand I’m still the last poster, but on the other hand it’s been a week so…
I did finish out season one of cardcaptor sakura and also tried my hand at a two hour vtuber stream this week, which went pretty well. For me watching is mostly focused on listening skills, so I’ve also been trying out some podcasts which fall into the same mental bucket for me. At the moment Nihongo con Teppei Z is around the right level for me, but I’m looking for one I like the presentation style of a bit more. I’d spent a lot of time listening to Japanese with Shun in January but kind of looking to move up a level from that content, but still stick with something I can listen to passively while walking.
This thread is indeed less lively, but I’m always watching something so can help unblock
I’ve been binging horrible youtube videos (want to hate humanity? ask me for reccs!) and idly working my way through 私の夫は冷凍庫に眠っている S1 | L30?? which is a really, really bad adaptation of the book. I’m bummed by it cause it could be so good but they decided to rewrite a lot of the story in ways that makes it worse for some reason
I found a better V-Tuber for FGO, who is really clear & not too high-pitched: Fate/Grand Order 七瀬セナ / Sena Nanase!! In the middle of the Septem arc, and trying to keep up somewhat w/ where I am in-game
Also been intensive watching Fate/stay night [Unlimited Blade Works] | L27 ep 0, using a simplified version of this approach: How to Study Japanese with YouTube videos, Anime, or Any Materials | Step by Step Tutorial (YT vid).
Details
Basically, line by line:
- Listen
- Try to write down what was said
- Check subs and make corrections
- Listen again (once or twice to strengthen your hearing)
The original approach also involves shadowing + anki (no thx), which is overkill for me. It’s taken me a really dedicated week to get through 33:43 (just another 11-13 min left). It’s absolutely been really beneficial tho, and I’ll probly do the next episode like this too.
One of my OG goals is to read FSN visual novel in JP… so this all is a step towards that (tho the VN is substantially harder than both the anime, and FGO).
