Yes, I remember I liked it. I also especially like that sport and will try to remember to watch it tomorrow morning (MEST) at the Olympics. I would prefer though if they wouldn‘t use those high tec bows at the games.
Do you mean 弓道 specifically, or archery in general? I thought Kyuudou wasn’t part of the Olympics?
All of that. Alas they use those high tec bows at the Olympics, I still like the atmosphere.
I’d like to do one of them as a hobby at some point… But I’d have to to get fluent in Japanese/spend significantly less time and money on it first ![]()
I probably wouldn’t actually do 弓道 tho, cuz don’t really wanna deal with the whole 道場 thing… Who knows tho
I’ve decided to stay the course. Even without manga filler, there’s a ton of walking around in circles because that’s how the manga was written. It helps that it’s also pretty much a perfect i+1 show for me right now, and since I like fantasy (both Western and Japanese) it’s also gathering me a lot of interest-specific vocabulary. Plus since most of the plot sections are 2-3 episodes I find it easy to knock out 3-4 episodes a day. I just try not to calculate how long it will take to get there. ![]()
This is what made me so interested in Tsurune, and I really enjoyed it! The MC (not really a spoiler, but blurring just in case) doesn’t just overcome his problems after a pep talk either, he puts in consistent effort over a long period of time and gets others to support him. I could really relate to some of the issues and frustrations he was facing.
I also bought the books a while ago, since I liked it so much. Still haven’t read them though.
If you do end up watching it, I would love to hear your opinion! I watched it with a couple of friends, and I don’t think they are into sports anime… Their reaction was a bit mild ![]()
This has been on my list for a while too since it’s on Netflix, but I’m hesitant since I’m not generally into sports anime. Do you think there’s enough there to potentially appeal to people who aren’t fans of sports anime, even if it didn’t work for your friends?
(Based on what AniList classifies as “sport anime”, I’ve watched Ping Pong the Animation which was meh, Vivid Strike which was meh, and Girls und Panzer and Chihayafuru both of which I like but are very non-traditional.)
You could watch the first episode, and if it doesn’t click with you leave it there.
True. I guess part of the question is how many episodes does it take to clearly show what it’ll be like. For some shows it’s clear in episode one, but others need a few episodes.
It will probably take more here than one episode. At the start it is unclear in which direction it will develop. But at last it‘s about getting better at something one likes and building a team. All of that with some obstacles on the way.
The main question for me is always whether I like the protagonists. If yes, actual contents almost doesn‘t matter.
As someone who likes sports anime, I’d say that two episodes in it doesn’t seem to be following a cliche storyline. There’s a lot more focus on the main character’s situation than archery itself (although there have been multiple discussions about how it works which have been woven in very organically to the plot in a way that i appreciate).
Again, grain of salt, I’ve seen two episodes and I quite like sports anime, but I think this so far feels like a show where you don’t need to be really into the genre to get something out of it.
My friends didn’t dislike it, they just didn’t find anything particularly exciting about it (plot progresses quite slowly). I started watching it when it had just finished airing and stopped after the first episode
I finally watched the whole thing earlier this year. 3 episodes should be enough to get a feeling for the show, I think.
I can see it appeal to people who don’t care much for sports anime. Of your list I only watched Chihayafuru, but that one is pretty different to Tsurune. Honestly, I might compare it to Hibike Euphonium instead (both from KyoAni, maybe that’s why).
You get some of the more typical “Sports anime” scenes, but it’s much more about the relationships the characters have to the sport than beating other teams and winning.
KyoAni did make every scene absolutely gorgeous, in case you care about the animation.
Yes, it being from KyoAni is a big plus. That does have its limits though, as I still won’t watch Free. ![]()
omg, Free is one of my favorites, but I also swam team in high school and love to ship all of the characters ![]()
The real reason to watch shows ![]()
- ささ恋 Stage Play!! (54 min preview) - this is a first for me, but I prefer this over the anime version. To be fair, this basically took everything that was well done in the anime, and used it as a foundation. Still, it feels very organic and not too theatre-y, and I can’t wait for the eventual blu-ray!!
- 恋は双子で割り切れない S1 | L25?? 3 - only half as nerdy as last week… also a bit more 嫌な. I’m hoping things don’t get too ugly. May drop if they do
- 義妹生活 S1 | L26 4 - still loving this. This episode was a bit less slow-paced than previous ones
- BanG Dream! S1 | L21 - a straightforward “cute girls form band” show. A bit rough around the edges, with some cringe mixed in, but I enjoyed it much more than BanG Dream! It's MyGO!!!!! | L23. Was able to understand everything, audio-only

- Fate/EXTRA Last Encore S1 | L29 halfway through, and while it’s probably the easiest Fate show to understand so far, it’s also the most boring. It’s making me wanna rewatch UBW
or maybe be brave enough to try Zero again
I’m looking forward to ガールズバンドクライ S1 | L26 blu-ray 2 getting here next(?) week, and planning to rewatch the series when it does (will “only” be my 4th watch through). I really kinda just wanna rewatch it right now tho…
I’ve never seen the anime but I’ve listened to a few of the songs. Not the kind of music I can listen to regularly, but it’s got a few catchy songs. I definitely prefer Love Live from a music perspective.
By the way, have you ever considered watching AKB0048? It’s a weird mix of idol and sci-fi. It’s been on my list to rewatch for a long time but I’m always a bit reluctant to watch without Japanese subs so I haven’t yet.
Which band(s) are you referring to? They’re all pretty different. Roselia and Morfonica are the two I was really impressed by personally (maybe Afterglow as well?). Poppin’ Party (the band featured in S1/who are the main characters of the game) are alright, but also not something I’d listen to regularly. Good to know re: Love Live
Do you know which comes first? ラブライブ!スーパースター!! S1 | L21 or ラブライブ! School idol project S1 | L21 ?
I haven’t but now I’m curious… the sci fi part without subs sounds intimidating… but guess I’ll have to try it and report back!
I think I’ve only heard songs by Roselia and Poppin’ Party. The latter is what I was referring to as having a few catchy songs but couldn’t listen to regularly.
Fire Bird by Roselia is probably my favorite if I had to pick.
School Idol Project is the original. It’s two seasons and a movie. It’s cheesy, but I enjoy it a lot. After that is Sunshine, of which I only watched the first season and dropped. After that is a spinoff Nijigasaki, which is about individual idols more than a group. I never watched that one. Superstar is the most recent one. I actually quite enjoyed the first season for having a smaller group of 5 idols (the earlier series always built up to 9 idols in a group). Unfortunately they expanded the group to 9 and then even more after the first season, which killed my interest.
If you do definitely let me know! The sci-fi aspects are also a big reason I’m reluctant to watch without subs. But it’s such an obscure (and semi-old) show that if it doesn’t already have Japanese subs available there likely never will be, unless someone makes a project of transcripting it and doing everything manually.
I haven’t listened enough to have a favorite track, but that’s definitely a good one!
I apparently got bored 11 min into ep 1, when I tried to watch it… but idrc if that was like DNF bored, “it’s just not interesting” bored, or ADHD bored… which I guess means I’ll have to try it again, I guess?
Can you watch it without having seen the original? It seems like it might be the more interesting of the two?
I go through ep 4… setting the sci-fi vocab aside, it’s definitely harder than Bandori, maybe similar difficulty to MyGO? I have to concentrate a bit to understand everything, and there’s a few things here and there I miss. The sci-fi vocab is probly like 80% “middle of a battle, so it doesn’t matter” sorta stuff, where you can get the gyst of what’s going on, without caring about what’s actually being said. I don’t feel confused by whatever I’m apparently missing, though I did check the episode summaries on Wikipedia just to be safe, afterwards.
The story itself is ok. The characters are interesting, and it’s well-paced, though took a few episodes before I was hooked (well I wouldn’t say I’m hooked, but I do plan to watch the rest). The whole thing is really gimmicky in the first place, and some of it is not even trying to be realistic, but that’s fine. There were parts that felt a bit like “this could be a video game”. I was surprised and relieved they got the auditions over with so quickly - I was expecting that to be most of the season.
If you’re into idols, it seems like a decent choice. I’d binge the rest of it rn, but it’s a rare day where I actually have plans to go outside ![]()
Someday when my Japanese is much better, it would be cool to do this sort of thing. It’s always frustrating when I can’t find subs for a show… tho sometime it’s a nice push, out of my comfort zone
