What are you watching today?

Yeah, “favorite” meaning of the like 5 songs I’ve heard.

You might miss some background about the Love Live competition (it’s new in the original and in this one it’s big and has some format changes to accommodate that and keep things from getting stale storytelling-wise), but you can probably get by just watching Superstar. Like I said, I really enjoyed the first season, probably a tad more than the original even. But one of the reasons I liked it was the really tight format of just having 5 main characters. So it really rubbed me the wrong way when they expanded the group after season one.

That was fast! I really should watch more anime, but I’ve been in an anime slump for a while now… good to know it’s doable if a bit challenging.

Haha yes, the show is one huge bizarro advertisement for AKB48, but I don’t mind since it’s fun and the music is good. It’s one where I’d watch the whole opening and ending sequence every episode.

I did go through an idol phase many years ago, which is when I watched Love Live, AKB0048, some Idolmaster, and a few others. More recently (i.e. last 4 years) I’ve really only watched Superstar season 1, Symphogear, and did my rewatch of the original Love Live. Symphogear is another weird idol/sci-fi mix, though very different from AKB0048.

Good to know re: love live. I guess I’ll (eventually) try the original again, but skip to Superstar if I’m not into it

Noted. 5 chars definitely sounds more appealing than 9 (but at least it’s better than 16 cough Idol x Idol Story)

They clearly had fun when planning it! I have found myself watching the OP a few times. It’s not quite “add to my Spotify playlist” level, but it’s pretty solid

I’m not sure the plot sounds as interesting, but maybe I’ll try it

My only idol encounters so far have been ヒロインたるもの!〜嫌われヒロインと内緒のお仕事〜 S1 | L22 (LOVE THIS), IDOL×IDOL STORY! | L24 (meh), and now AKB0048 S1 | L26 (so far, so good)… so I’m kinda ambivalent on it overall. I like bands much better, in general

Symphogear peaked in season 2 unfortunately. The rest wasn’t bad, I just didn’t like the direction it went. Part of the reason I enjoyed the first two seasons was because they had Lyrical Nanoha and then Lyrical Nanoha A’s vibes. I enjoy the original Nanoha for what it is as a slight deconstruction of the magical girl genre (particularly by having so much sci-fi focus), but the second season A’s is one of my favorite anime. And while it wasn’t to the same level, the second season of Symphogear had a similar feel which is why it’s my favorite season from the series.

I started ツルネ ―風舞高校弓道部― S1 | L26 today. I was trying to decide what to watch and decided to give this a shot since it recently came up here. First two episodes were good. In the second episode I was like “ohh ghost story twist, wasn’t expecting that in this series” just for it to be a (hilarious) fake out. The animation is great so far, which is of course no surprise given it’s KyoAni.

I absolutely cracked up for that reveal. :joy:

Y’all are piquing my interest now… Not that I need to start another new thing lol

I mentioned over in the August listening challenge thread that I’ve been on a Magical Girl kick lately and picked up where I had left off with カードキャプターさくら S1 | L19 and started 東京ミュウミュウ S1 | L20. I realized that I just wasn’t vibing with Mew Mew and decided to dump it instead of press on to see if it would grow on me. Instead I started 愛天使伝説ウェディングピーチ S1 | L30?? and, wow, I think I’m in love.

It’s got real big Sailor Moon energy (which isn’t surprising because the anime is either from the year before or the year after Sailor Moon started), but not at all in a bad way. It’s less of “we have Sailor Moon at home” and more like what Digimon is to Pokemon. There’s a green haired girl who uses 俺 and talks like a boy, a very obvious future love interest that our main character hates, an evil queen and a hot (by 90s anime standards) villain. I’m sold.

I’ve known about this show for years and years, but never wanted to watch it bc ew, magical girls in wedding dresses? Which, if you think about it, isn’t all that weird compared to sailor outfits/school uniforms, and it took only two episodes to find her “Angel Fighter” transformation into a much cuter and much more Sailor Moon-y outfit. I have no idea if I’m in for the whole 51 episode ride (considering I’m watching so many long anime already), but right now I’m hooked!

I saw Wedding Peach (dubbed) when it came out now almost 30 years ago and actually liked it more than Sailor Moon at that time :face_with_hand_over_mouth:. But I‘ve not yet seen the original version.

Oh, that sounds really promising! I watched it as a kid and only dubbed it but I don’t have any strong memories of it. I am also currently watching Magical Girl shows (but mostly random Precure seasons) and am now tempted to watch wedding peach next to get a break from Precure :eyes:

Edit: When researching the show I realized I still know the complete opening lyrics in German :joy:

I’ve gone through this phase, but with the caveat that I’ve never really watched the classics and traditional magical girl series like Sailor Moon or even Card Captor Sakura. This is not because I’m against watching shows like that, but rather because I just don’t usually watch long anime series.

Besides Madoka Magica, which is my all time favorite anime, I’m a huge fan of 魔法少女リリカルなのは | L25. Especially season 2, A’s. It’s basically traditional magical girl series meets cool sci-fi setting. (Yukari Tamura is also my favorite seiyuu so that is certainly a factor.)

I really only watched Sailor Moon and also CCS and Magic Knights Rayearth because I’m a big Clamp fan. (I haven’t ever actually finished Rayearth though so maybe I should add that to my list too).

Precure has been on my list for a while, but there’s so many and I don’t know where to start so I keep getting intimidated

Added to my magical girls backlog!

I am just completely picking random seasons, but at first I was also intimidated  It is pretty childish, so I am not sure if you would like it. Vibes are more like Pokemon I feel like. Heartcatch is supposed to be the best season (and not as childish/low stakes?), but I haven’t watched it yet. (I didn’t wanted to start with the best season lol)

I started some interesting new series e.g.:

  1. 舟を編む S1 - about a group of people that are working on a new version of their publisher’s directory. The series has its poetic moments, that’s probably why it’s graded that high, e.g. when the old chief of that group explains their mission, he starts like this: 辞書は言葉の海を渡る舟, but don’t nail me down on concrete words , or when people start to muse about the obscure meaning of some word.

  2. 謎の彼女X S1 - a wonderfully hilarious and absurd series which has its (heterosexually) ecchi moments. I assume it will end up in some kind of romance.

Ooh I read the translation of 舟を編む and loved it! I didn’t realise it had been adapted haha

Haven’t had much motivation to actually watch anything lately, but I did get through カーニバル・ファンタズム S1 | L27 eps 1-8 with & without commentary! Overall I understood a lot more without subs this time around.

Carnival Phantasm + commentary

The first 4 eps are Neco Arc & Ciel, and their commentary was ok, tho a bit hard to understand at times. The next 4 were Taiga & Ilya, which were mostly better except for the Shinj-Sakura episode (which I will altogether skip on future watches), and the Saber maid episode. There’s also a bonus Shirou + Ilya commentary for the Berserker episode, which was much more enjoyable than Ilya-Taiga.

While it’s interesting to put on the commentary once, I won’t do it after this watch through, bc it really takes away from the perfection that is the actual episodes themselves. Also next time I’ll watch the disc w/o commentary first, and then with commentary next - instead of episode+commentary back to back. Not going one episode right into the next takes away a lot of the fun.

ガルクラ ep 3 commentary

ガルクラ ep 3 commentary was great!! While I really enjoyed Rina (Nina) & Yuri (Momoka) in ep 1, having Yuri & Shuri* (Rupa) was great bc they had a bit more music geeking moments, where they were singing along to certain parts, or commenting on their favorite or hardest bits in a song, and stuff like that. I wish ep 2 also had commentary tho.

*or was it Natsu/Tomo?? I might have to rewatch it now

While I’m doing more pure listening rn, I may try to finish AKB0048 today, to up my August Listening Challenge hours, and so it’s not dragging on (like how Konosuba and 天転 have just been sitting there for 2 months). This is why I prefer to binge things lol

Update: I finally finished AKB0048 S1 | L27 and while I didn’t exactly hate it (I even enjoyed it sometimes), I definitely won’t watch it again. Now my watching list is down to 9 .

Kakegurui Season 2! I’ve been enjoying the live-action show a lot more than the anime.

Picked ヲタ恋 back up. Watching audio-only. It’s a bit hard, but fun. As you may guess from the title, a lot of very specific slang and references. Kinda makes me wanna try the manga again:

Is this what you’re referring to?

I love that show! I know both the manga and the anime will be rough for me still but one day™.

Although, actually I’m watching Inuyasha with subs, and that bobbles around between 27-28… although I think that’s only hard sometimes when yokai talk or Naraku lays out his newest plans… I think wotakoi would probably be harder all the way through?

Yes, the live action! The comedic timing is so on point and the actors for both Suzui and Mary are so funny and dramatic. i use language reactor to watch though as a lot of finance and super polite terms are used. it pushes me to want to watch more shows that use keigo (like workplace anime)

ヲと恋 is definitely harder than Inuyasha, imo. The thing with Inuyasha is that even when you don’t quite understand it, you can still more or less follow what’s going on, due to the genre, in a way that you can’t with ヲと恋. Also there’s a lot more repeated vocab, and you get more time to assimilate it, since it’s such a long show.

It never actually matters what he’s saying anyway lol. “Oh yay, Naraku has thought up some new convoluted thing that he’s gonna go on too long about now” (sry I got a bit burned out of him from going thru the anime and manga )

How far into Inuyasha are you? Skipping filler, or no?
