What are you watching today?

I’m currently watching ロード・オブ・ザ・リング, which is the first movie of Jackson’s series. It’s currently available on Amazon, if I go by the languages you can watch it in, probably in the whole world.

死役所, I read the first two (2 of 25) manga and wondered when there would come out a anime or live action series. Judging by the poster they found some well fitting actors for the roles. The manga series is still ongoing, so hopefully it won’t stop after just 10 episodes and will soon be visible outside of Netflix as well.

For point one, I hope it gets a second season because I commented in my review that the ending left too much unknown and I found it unsatisfying. If it’s based on an ongoing series that makes sense. But also, live action dramas very rarely get season continuations compared to anime so I’m not holding my breath there.

For the second one, possibly? It’s only on Netflix until December 31st, so maybe somewhere else will pick it up.

Finished 転生王女と天才令嬢の魔法革命 S1 | L30 . Overall I think it was an OK adaptation. I like the novels better. The one thing I’ll credit though, I thought the anime did the closing events in the final episode better than the book did. We get to actually see Euphilia negotiating and persuading the nobles, coaxing the magic society, being announced as a 精霊契約者 who’s been adopted into the royal family, and is now in the line of succession for the throne, etc.. The novel basically glazed over that. Otherwise the ending felt a bit rushed, but it turned out that’s cuz it’s like that in the books too. I can’t help but wonder if the author wrote the ending with the anime in mind (転天 is originally a web novel, but this volume was pretty substantially changed apparently, and he also mentions the anime adaptation in the あとがき)

A mix of stuff from the manga that didn’t make it into the anime adaptation. Most of it is pretty trivial, some of it is just fan service, and then the last portion is really important plot history, and characterization for Yotsuba, and also Itsuki that it’s really a shame it wasn’t present in its proper place, originally. It’s a little making me wanna get back to rereading the manga. One thing I like about the Itsuki scenes is that they make it pretty clear that she was never interested in him romantically, in the first place - which I think is pretty cool for a harem

Weeklies Report

アオのハコ S1 | L24 - excellent as ever. Also I know what’s coming and I feel so bad for Hina

Ranma ½ S1 | L25 - was great. 2nd half of the figure skating battle, and they made the whole “Akane can’t figure out that Ryouga is P-chan” trope feel slightly more believable (at least for that one part). I do think I liked this battle a bit better in the original anime, but it’s great in both versions. More importantly: Shampoo showed up! So now she can take up more screen time, and hopefully Ryouga will get less (he’s my 2nd or 3rd most hated character in the story)

魔法使いになれなかった女の子の話 S1 | L25 - 普通, a bit better than normal. It still feels like a show that tried to have a message, but doesn’t really seem to have anything to say (or at least hasn’t tried to say it yet). If I look at the show as “the Kurumi & Yuzu friendship show”, then yay they continued being good friends. Anyway the plot’s finally moving. So that’s nice at least

ダンジョンに出会いを求めるのは間違っているだろうか S5 | L30 - was ok. It looks like that stupidity is finally over. Now we can just go on to a big battle the Freya will obviously lose. I really hope there’s some actual repercussions for her, or else I’ll lose even more respect for the story.

ダンダダン S1 | L28 - well it wasn’t as bad as last week, but it seemed pretty pointless, and now they’re throwing in the 幼馴染 threat… I’m assuming this is the source material’s fault, but still  At least it’s equal opportunity about stupid tropes?

ソードアート・オンライン オルタナティブ ガンゲイル・オンライン II | L29 - Was ok this week. There were some IRL scenes, which were cool - except they didn’t show who the characters actually were (and Llen and the grenade girl sound and look totally different IRL), so I was a bit lost. They dropped in an ALO reference and pointed out that (ironically) that sorta game is more brutal than something like GGO, in a sense. Otherwise they’re doing this 3 episode mini-battle against AI or something.

やり直し令嬢は竜帝陛下を攻略中 S1 | L28 - introduced a competing suitor, who I think was 8 years old, but didn’t behave remotely like one… so I guess that explains why nobody else is shocked at the way Jill behaves?! I really don’t like the inconsistent way the show treats the age thing… like if you’re gonna go for “this is creepy”, then actually commit to it, or stop calling attention to it. I wonder if the novels handle it this poorly… but I also probly don’t want to find out? One thing that was sorta cool was this time it was the male lead acting like the distraught, upset, possessive tsundere who’s had her feelings hurt b/c she jumped to conclusions about cheating/浮気 - which would be great… except for the whole 19 & 10 year old thing… but what else is new

星降る王国のニナ S1 | L28 - I’m so excited for this drama to continue, and really wonder where the author’s gonna take it. I have mixed feelings about Nina though at this point. Like on one hand I really sympathize, on the other hand she’s basically messing with peoples’ hearts. Though realistically I’d probly have at least as much trouble navigating that situation.

3 episodes in. The 1st episode was very underwhelming, but the next 2 were pretty solid (ep 3 was especially interesting). I wish I could remember who the characters are better, they’ve sort of half stuck at this point. (I’m reading the novels, but I’m still so early on that I haven’t had a chance to reinforce a lot of them yet)

マリみて S2

I just finished マリア様がみてる S2 | L27 , and wow that was a damn good season! My only complaint was with the last few eps, which I’m hoping are written a bit better in the book (the conclusion was kindd obvious, but the steps along the way felt a bit unbelievable). Also between the novels and the anime, and I can just about distinguish and name all the characters and their relations, finally (the novels helpfully have diagrams & photos in the beginning. Wikipedia does too, but it’s impossible not to spoil yourself).

As an aside, I can’t wait to get to the (much later) point in the story where Sachiko has graduated and hopefully won’t be around so much (or at all?). She’s really not my favorite character, ironically. Actually it’s kinda funny… I love this series, but can’t stand half the characters in it  Having now finished the series, it’s incredible how it takes these initially really unlikeable characters, and turns them into your favorites over time (thank you character growth & development!)

S3: Very impressive overall. Series has grown on me so much!! Surprise LGBT representation in マリみて S3: there’s a trans girl who comes out in front of both student councils, and is welcomed very openly

Update: I finished all of マリみて - what an incredible experience! Definitely one of my top shows, and I’m so excited to continue with the novels now!! I’m a very surprising twist, I think Kashiwagi Suguru (one of the few male characters) may actually be my favorite character; with Yumi being the other option; and probably Touko being 3rd I guess Yumi’s affections for her in S3-S4 rubbed off on me.

Next up is…

Strawberry Panic thoughts (tldr: eww)

Decided to try this for both it’s historical value, and as a short break btwn マリみて seasons. The first episode was too drastic a mood change, and kinda cringe so far, in various ways that マリみて was not. So I binged 3 seasons of マリみて instead!

Anyway, now I’ve watched 4 episodes, and it’s still pretty awful. I’m gonna force myself to give it a few more episodes, b/c I’m interested for the historic value, but so far I can’t see myself liking the show. My main issue is that the love interest is a predatory creep who constantly makes seemingly unwanted advances on the other students, including repeatedly on the MC, from the second they arrive. In all these situations, the other student is just totally frozen, as if she has some sort of magical charm she casts. She also completely shirks most of their responsibilities, all while somehow being the idol of the school. So far it feels incredibly shallow and unrealistic most of the time. Episode 4 was the only one I somewhat enjoyed, and it’s b/c she’s barely in it.

End of Seasonals

  • ダンダダン S1 | L27 - Started at 5 stars, ended at 3. Seemed like it had a lot of potential, but really deteriorated in the last 1/3rd of the season. I don’t think I’ll watch S2, unless there’s few good shows out.
  • 魔法使いになれなかった女の子の話 S1 | L24 - Basically same as it’s been the whole time. The interpersonal portion of the ending was nice, the plot and storytelling continued to be half-baked. Somehow the villain just got off as if nothing had happened, and school continued like normal the next day, while he insinuated that he was up to something more nefarious. Seriously wth was that?!

All the other weeklies had perfectly enjoyable episodes

I just finished watching 本陣殺人事件 | L30 which is the 1970s movie adaptation of the Kindaichi book of the same name. I haven’t read that book (though I own it), but I’ve read another in the same series so I had an idea what I was walking into.
Even with no subs, for a 70s movie I had a surprisingly easy time understanding it. I’m interested to try more older movies now, as I’ve kinda assume “oh they’ll be hard due to audio quality issues” but honestly some films are totally ok.

If anyone is interested the movie is available on YouTube (no idea if legal so not linking) under the English title Death at an Old Mansion with English subs in the closed captions (I didn’t use them so can not speak to their accuracy).

End of seasonals:

  • ダンジョンに出会いを求めるのは間違っているだろうか S5 | L30 - the big battle part is enjoyable so far, but apparently we have to wait for spring to watch the rest. I’ll watch it then for closure, I guess. By far the worst anime I watched this season
  • やり直し令嬢は竜帝陛下を攻略中 S1 | L28 - the final episode managed to include a mix of the stuff I really don’t like, with an interesting twist and interesting hook towards the end. Apparently she’s 11 now, so I guess the show granted my wish for aging them up /sarcasm. It turns out the original timeline thing isn’t just a story hook. Despite my misgivings about how the show treats the age gap, there’s enough interestingly written elements to the story that I’d watch a season 2, or maybe even consider trying the novels someday
  • ささやくように恋を唄う S1 | L20 - finally released the last 2 episodes. They did them well enough, and they did look more polished than many previous episodes. Overall I have mixed feelings about this adaptation, but would say I liked it and lukewarmly recommend it (tho I wholeheartedly recommend the manga)
  • 星降る王国のニナ S1 | L28 - damn this was an interesting final ep. I really hope this show gets a season 2. It seems like such a waste if not
  • ソードアート・オンライン オルタナティブ ガンゲイル・オンライン II | L29 - the last 4 episodes made up for the rest of the season (which was okay), and especially the very end was a really nice use of a cliffhanger - some very interesting information. It actually made me interested to watch a future season
  • アオのハコ S1 | L23 - continues to be great, and we’re into the 2nd cour now!!
  • Ranma ½ S1 | L26 - they did great! Can’t wait for S2

Started rewatch - just 1st ep so far, and I can understand it pretty well without subs so far (though it’s a little difficult when multiple characters are speaking). It’s the sorta thing I have to concentrate for, unlike say ささやくように恋を唄う S1 | L20 which I can casually watch. It’s funny b/c on one hand, I’ve written that it’s a perfect adaptation of the manga. Otoh I’m watching it now (while reading the manga for the 3rd time) and thinking “wow, this is so different than how I hear it in my head!”. My one criticism is that they’re not very realistic about Mai’s injured arm’s range of motion (which iirc the manga is careful about, since it can be a lot more selective with what it shows)

Decided to start watching ふしぎ駄菓子屋銭天堂 series as part of the listening challenge for January. Simple enough since I know the gist of the stories that are being portrayed and the language is easy to follow if you know the patterns of speech Beniko uses.

The animation seems to be a combination of paper puppetry stop motion and actual animation. So far I’m quite liking it. It has a charm all its own and I’m not sure what else to compare it to.

Episodes are very short (9m each) but each one seems to cover a chapter, or 2 for longer chapters. There are some chapters that seem to be missing but I think they are maybe out of sync if looking at the clips in the start up is anything to go by.

If you like the Zenitendo series of books and want an easy listen/ watch, I’d recommend them.

Watched another ep of ストロベリー・パニック S1 | L26 - creepy predator etoile girl wasn’t in it, so it was just mildly cute and underwhelming (and not extremely uncomfortable). In general it’s way too high-pitched moe for me, and the main character is way too passive/reactive (she makes Yumi from マリみて seem proactive and assertive lol). I’ll give it another episode or two I guess

Watched 1st 4 eps of 私の百合はお仕事です! S1 | L25 - enjoying it very much

2 eps in - pretty fascinating, and kinda wild… I’'m watching audio-only, cuz I couldn’t be bothered to figure out the time offset for the subs… so much of the larger plot is over my head. The fantasy aspects are a bit surreal. I get the impression it’s gonna be a bit of an aggravating ride (naive MC, abusive rival, etc), but that I’ll enjoy it. I gather Utena and Himemiya are supposed to be some sort of item, or at least that’s the vibe I’m getting. Apparently Utena and Himemiya are middle schoolers, which I would not have remotely gotten from their character designs and behaviors. That makes the older male characters high schoolers. I really hope Utena eventually frees Himemiya from this nonsense 薔薇の花嫁 role - cuz I don’t see why she should have to put up with it

1 ep - this one’s really fascinating - some very interesting character designs, and impressively eccentric cast so far, extremely melodramatic visual and sound effects (I burst out laughing once or twice) - and very lively, but kind of heavy at the same time. The characters who are supposed to be the school celebrities (or w/e) almost all have a very masculine design. It’s a no-uniforms, all-girls school with a sorority setting. The sorority people seem kind of sinister, and it seems like everyone’s gonna have some sorta skeletons in the closet or something.

Anyway, I’m looking forward to getting further into both of these!

I love this series to bits. Very surreal though, so might be a harder choice if you’re not already familiar with the plot.

My only recommendation is to watch for symbolism rather than interpreting things literally as it’s not written to be taken literally

Yeah, I’m getting that. It looks like the subs are 1.5 min too late, so I’ll try shifting them and see if it works for the next ep.

Will keep in mind re: the symbolism thing (I mean I somewhat expected w/ all the rose stuff, but good to know)

Omg I loved おにいさまへ! My shoujo heart! The sound effects are kind of epic and part of the entire package.

You do not understand the force with which I am trying to ignore a desire to rewatch/reread with hearing about the series so much in here now :joy:

I just got through episode 4. I am hooked. If I wasn’t reading マリみて rn, I’d literally be spending the rest of my night on this. It’s soooo good!

I’m planning on finishing おにいさまへ before watching anymore, so I won’t mention it for at least another few days to a week

I just can’t get myself to watch any anime these days. I think it’s mostly that I don’t want to have to be hyper focused when watching TV, and any combination of listening to Japanese or reading subtitles (Japanese or English) requires more effort than just watching a show in English or something on YouTube… I’ve still only watched seven episodes of アオのハコ S1 | L23. I watched one episode of 疑似ハーレム S1 | L22 over two months ago and haven’t continued. And I watched three episodes of ツルネ ―風舞高校弓道部― S1 | L27 five months ago. It’s not like I wasn’t enjoying these shows… it’s just whenever I have free time I’m either reading, playing video games, or watching something that requires less focus and energy.

If you have a suggestion besides “quit your job so you have time to do more things” let me know.

My tip: Watch them w/o subtitles and you have less stress. It‘s OK to not understand everything. What is likable of a show will even work without 100% understanding. And if it is really good you can rewatch it in one or two years and then understand more of it.

That sounds like more stress! I don’t care about understanding 100%. But if I can understand 90% with subs and 70% without, I’ll just be inclined to pause more to bridge the gap! Particularly if it’s a show I want to enjoy for the story.

Maybe I’ll see what shows I’ve been considering that I don’t have subs for anyway and try it as an experiment.

I’ve mostly been focused on catching up to the anime watches that I’d been neglecting this week, so I’ve watched a bunch of episodes of ダンジョン飯 | L31 and のんのんびより Repeat | L21 . I also tend to bucket my listening activity together with my watching activity, so it’s probably worth mentioning also that I’ve been catching up the podcast club for 4989 American Life too.

Other things that are on my short-to-medium term to watch list are:

  • Yuru Camp S3 and Movie
    • I watched season 1 and 2 last year, and there’s a S4 coming out later this year. Yuru Camp S4 is a nice spot for use as language learning material where it’s something I’m interested in enough that I’ll probably watch it but not so interested in it that I’m worried about my level of Japanese skill hampering the experience (unlike Oshi No Ko which from everything I’ve heard while trying to avoid spoilers seems like both my type of show and something I’ll have to follow)
  • More Non Non Biyori
    • I started an offshoot club on Wanikani after S1 and we’re in the middle of Repeat, so I’ll probably finish out Repeat and go on to Vacation and NonStop.
  • Shirobako
    • This is my favourite anime and something I rewatch most years. This year is probably a good chance to try experiencing it in Japanese - last year I did watch the movie, and it was challenging, but not as much as its current Natively level seems to suggest. I nominated it for the WK anime club, so maybe I’ll see how it does in the polls there, or maybe I’ll just go ahead and watch it myself.

I tried an episode or two of Shirobako in JP. Even with subs, soooooo much was going over my head. So I decided to come back later. It’s excellent tho (have watched with EN subs). Hope you enjoy!!
