What are you watching today?

I finally finished all three seasons, the original movie, and all OVAs of ゆるゆり | Lv. 21. I had been keeping it in the background as my show for when I had low motivation. Its a show that’s important to me and a show Ive seen before.

But more importantly, there were two spinoff movies released last year, something like a 10 yesr gap in the show being animated, and I’ve never seen them. 大室家 Dear Sisters | Lv. 20. I have no idea if you need to watch ゆるゆり first, but I wanted it fresh in my mind.

As soon as the clock hits midnight and my Japanese time rolls over, Im loading it up. Who needs sleep?

I’m sure they accounted for newcomers, but having picked up both comics in the middle (they’re monthly in Yurihime), it’s best to be familiar with the characters and relationships from ゆるゆり already. I like 大室家 more, of the two (but have only read like the most recent 16 chapters)

@Naphthalene Maybe you’ll like this.

New season is starting… not too much catching my interest, but…

Watched ep 1, mixed so far… a little slow, and main character is a bit too genki, but we’ll see. Unfortunately Amazon doesn’t have it with subs (do they ever?). I followed well enough, but had to very actively listen (and still missed some stuff). There were 2 times where I was like “sorry were those random noises, or were you actually speaking Japanese?” I did catch the famous 「 *汝のあるべき姿に戻れ」(カードキャプターさくら | L21) tho

Anyway, maybe I should watch it through other means, so I can have subs…

This looks like it will be fire!! Also like it could eventually be yuri? But that’s probly just wishful thinking

Anne of Green Gables… I’ve never read it, and my interest is a mix of “Western classic in Japanese”, and that the Canadian film version (1935 紅雀 べにすずめ) was one of many Western films influential to 少女小説

I found a crime show I might actually like, and can hopefully understand!

I’m curious about that Anne Shirley anime as well. :handshake:

Definitely want to check this one out too because of anime food

I started it, and I’m in love already, and so are the characters, it seems! The initial setup reminds me of 私の百合はお仕事です | L27 (well I guess it’s the other way around)… somehow this is 20 times as ridiculous, yet more believable(?), organic(?). Also much more pleasant (to be fair, it’s a comedy)

Spoilers for わたゆり

like (spoilers for わたゆり) instead of facing workplace abuse (hijinks aside), they protected the MC from an abuser instead. It’s not an adult manipulating a high schooler into a really uncomfortable, toxic workplace, where there’s really blurry boundaries, and where they’re performing for a bunch of adults… instead it’s a bunch of high schooler friends & rich kids having fun. They also actually train the MC!.

わたゆり is actually my fav yuri manga, in part bc there’s so much to pick apart… also it’s an intense drama, kinda like a telenovela… so this is a silly comparison anyway

The language is surprisingly harder than I was expecting. Also somehow the manga is L29, but this is 27. Is it all the handwriting?! :stuck_out_tongue:

Also what's up with this?

There’s like the exact same thing in one of the Sailor Moon episodes (maybe in R or S? idrc exactly… it was the one with the portrait painter I think). Is it cuz Is this just a standard shoujo gag?

I’ve been considering a re(rerererere) watch recently and this might push me over the edge. :joy:

I’ve seen it so many times that I’m not really a good judge of difficulty for it, but the manga kicks my butt every time I give it a try. One day™.

doooooo iiiiiit!! Seriously, I can see why

When I tried the manga preview this morning, it definitely felt pretty hard (as did 私の百合はお仕事です! 1 | L27), but after watching a few eps, it’s clicking better (definitely not something I can “just read” tho). This is making me wanna read it, but I have no book budget for this month  … so I’ll have to wait.

In terms of difficulty, I’m watching it w/ subs and catching most of it in real-time. Looking at the manga preview, there’s some lines where I’m like “oh - that’s what that was!” So rn the things I found most challenging for the manga are that I need to really pay close attention, and the handwriting… which is to say, the L27 for the show seems accurate so far (3 episodes). If I was watching without subs though, it would feel a lot harder I think

I used to go to sleep to the show when I had insomnia, lol. Even way back when I would have had no hope of understanding it, I just watched/listened to it so much that I at least know what every scene is talking about. I have it marked with English subs and I might just leave it that way (or block grading) bc it’s probably not a fair comparison for anything else :joy:

For the manga I have the physicals, and I also, erm, obtained scans of it at some point. I’d maybe consider reading it with Mokuro, but it still feels like it’d be more work than fun (and I have plenty of L26-27 manga that I can read first, if I was up for a challenge). I’m planning to read it eventually, but at this point I’ve had the manga for so long that I’d want it not to feel like torture to read. :joy:

Coming out on Netflix at the end of the month, and Sawashiro Miyuki    is playing Oscar

Certainly easier than watching the 40 episode ベルサイユのばら S1 | L43?? (not to mention L43 is hard for me to even conceive… tho @Biblio gradings suggest it should be L35?)… so with all that in mind, I’ll be checking it out (and maybe doing some jpdb reviews for the anime btwn now and then).

Its been… 17 years for me? Yet as soon as I read those words the OP came flying out of some dark corner of my memory.

OPs are very persistant. I can still sing the (German) OPs of my childhood animes despite not having watched any of those in like 20+ years. :skull:

I still remember Dragonball Z’s but that’s cheating.

Dragon dragon ball, Dragonball Z
Dragon dragon ball, Z
Repeat

Localized anime in the 90s and early 2000s was wild.

No “rock the dragon”?

And of course “gotta catch em all”

Nah, Canada had its own opening for whatever reason.

And despite the opening being Canada only, they used the American pronunciation of Z! The whole thing was weird.

So admittedly this video has some weird aspects (the most immediately obvious being that the host uses a voice changer since they’re pretending to be a bird mascot :person_shrugging:) but I found this info about different book publishers/book printing styles really interesting:

@pm215 if you don’t mind the voice I suspect this is the sort of info you’d enjoy as well
