What are you watching today?

ロックは淑女の嗜みでして S1 | L30?? episode 1 was a good start! The お嬢様学校 vs crazy rock girl contrast is cool so far. I can’t claim this with certainty, but the music performance animation seemed a bit influenced by ガールズバンドクライ S1 | L26 to me (tho less extreme panning), and is very well done so far. Interested to see where it goes. My guess for difficulty is probably upper 20s - definitely grateful to have subs for this one, but could still have caught much of it without.

The ultimate in all fluff, not substance. Probably too much fluff for me. I enjoyed it for the first four episodes, but got really bored toward the end. If I wasn’t using this for listening practice, I would have dropped it.

Tried an episode. L35 seems accurate (so I definitely need subs for it). Part of the problem is just the audio quality and (lack of) enunciation from certain characters. Combine that with antiquated speech styles & vocab, and yeah that makes sense… Watched on Amazon Prime JP, but found subs on jimaku, so I’ll watch locally instead. Definitely gonna need to do some jpdb for this though

So far おにいさまへ | L26 seems more interesting. Oscar & Andre did immediately make me think of Rei & Kaoru though (especially Oscar, with that character design). The whole “born a girl, but gonna raise you as a boy for reasons” setup made me think of リボンの騎士 S1 | L30?? - though the circumstances are entirely different. In リボンの騎士 it’s cuz of a mishap & national secrecy/security. In ベルサイユ it’s just b/c the father is a raging PoS. Curious to see the show will play with gender roles & stuff.

It’s making me wanna read the manga, but I have no books budget this month :sob:

My memory from having watched Rose of Versailles ages ago it kind backs down from actually doing anything interesting with gender. Typical “I dress like a boy but I wish I could be seen as a woman” stuff that’s so common with tomboy-esque tropes in anime. I have a crush on Oscar though.

Oh, sound like リボンの騎士 & おにいさまへ will probably be more interesting in that regard then. Tho I’m not a fan of how リボンの騎士 ends (at least the book)

So I started watching アンチヒーロー S1 | L32 yesterday and watched a whole episode (1h+) and I thought it was a banger. Today, I am looking over my activity logs in ActivityWatch in order to log it here on LearnNatively and I am realizing that I accidentally started from episode 9 :skull: That’s so weird. It didn’t feel like an episode 9 at all. It could have been an episode 1 just as well.

I once accidentally started a show on the second season and was like “wow this is amazing they just get straight into it, no wasted time with introductions!” now sometimes if I don’t click with a show I just skip to episode two and see if I like it more

Do you go back and watch the skipped episodes if you do like it more?

Not usually  I am not a completionist really, so it doesn’t bother me to just leave the episode I wasn’t enjoying unfinished. That show I mentioned I did try to watch the first season once I’d finished season 2…but then I didn’t complete it :joy:

Boldly and bravely watching a show with no gradings 新白雪姫伝説プリーティア | L30??

The character designs. The OP. The so many hot boys. I don’t know where this is going, but it’s going to be an interesting ride.

5 eps into ベルサイユのばら S1 | L43?? - this is getting quite fun, with all the court drama! After having read/watched so many ヨーロッパ貴族っごこ & お嬢様学校 stories, it’s nice seeing a story with actual European nobility. It feels more authentic, and it’s cool to hear the historical language (ironically the speaking is much faster and rougher, even if grammatically similar). Definitely need subs, and still like おにいさまへ better

Finished 美少女戦士セーラームーンクリスタル Season II: Black Moon | L28 - solid adaptation as usual. Have half of S3 left, but need to read vol 6 first.

1st ep of アン・シャーリー S1 | L30?? - it’s really good, and Anne is definitely quite remarkable! Looking forward to the next ep. Only thing bugging me is Anne’s VA reminds me of Jill from やり直し令嬢は竜帝陛下を攻略中 S1 | L28 . I’m hoping there will be subs for it on jimaku eventually, cuz I’m catching most, but not all. Otoh it’s good listening practice. Curious to watch the 1979 赤毛のアン S1 | L30?? … maybe when I’m done with ベルサイユのばら

桜蘭高校ホスト部 S1 | L27 I’m still enjoying, tho episode 8 had a few wtf moments for me

I have a feeling that’s the show I watched years ago with an English fan sub of slightly questionable quality which notably had the characters saying “Yap!” all the time…

Yeah, that was really interesting. I’d assumed the odd “top of the book not smooth” thing was just because of the books being second hand rather than a deliberate effect some of the publishers go for. And the bookmark thread is obviously a “only some books have one” thing but I hadn’t realised it was only a single publisher. Speaking of which, there’s a Shinchosha museum in Kakunodate (because the founder of the company was born there): sadly it was closed for changeover of the exhibition when I was there, but they do have this bit of art on the outside of the building which is a representation of the 1947 bunkobon edition of 雪国:

For a second, I thought you meant legal courtroom drama there and got excited, but then I re-read the sentence and remembered that court has multiple meanings.

I finished 新白雪姫伝説プリーティア | L27 and this show was so weird. Very much felt like a magical girl show that happened in the gap between when Sailor Moon finished airing and PreCure taking over as queen of 魔法少女. Similarities to Sailor Moon were not helped by sharing the same director as the first two seasons of the anime.

Definitely over my comfortable listening level, but I don’t know that I liked enough that I’d go back to it at a later date. I will treat myself to something a little easier next.

So what made it weird? (Idk anything about PreCure)

There’s just stuff constantly happening and a really weird tonal whiplash between the stuff with Himeno’s family and the rest of the plot. One minute, she’s fighting these bug larva things and then I’d blink and her sister would be laying booby traps for her in her family’s giant mansion and then I’d blink there’d be some romance melodrama unfolding.

There’s the seven hot guys, which is probably too many hot guys for a 13 episode anime, since they’re all lacking in the personality department. (But this is supposed to be a new Snow White so I guess she needs her seven dwarfs.) Whose favorite part of Sailor Moon was when Mamoru constantly negged Usagi? Because that’s here. And whose favorite part of Sailor Moon where Mamoru went evil? It’s here too, but this time it’s one of the OTHER hot guys who goes evil.

Maybe if they’d spread this out over a longer span of episodes it would have felt less chaotic. I haven’t even mentioned the tragic romance with Himeno’s sister, the secret identity of the villain OR the friend who is extremely obsessed with romance who shows up purely for comedic interludes. There’s just so much that happens.

Also the transformation sequence has her “becoming one” with one of the seven hot guys and uh… sparkles come out of her womb? Was I supposed to interpret it that way? I don’t know, but they could have placed the sparkles almost literally anywhere else.

I don’t know if it was good, but I watched it all in four days, because I just wanted to see where it was going.

That sounds like a hot mess of too many tropes for 13 episodes (I’m almost tempted to watch it, but I don’t need another new thing)

Yeah that sounds pretty unambiguous

I, on the other hand wasn’t all that interested based on @cloverff’s lukewarm review but now that I know it’s a hot mess it might jump the line of some other stuff :joy::joy::sweat_smile:

Please share if you do watch. It’s definitely a hot mess, but in a way that I was never bored while watching.
