What are you watching today?

I may as well finish

Yeah I like that side of it. But a lot of the time the show gets extremely asinine, and also I’m so over the Giant Boobs thing. Like it was funny the first time they did it, bc they took it to an extreme and poked fun at out how ridiculously inconvenient it would be. But lately it’s like every episode or two there’s a new abnormally large breasted character who has to flaunt it or ppl have to go on about it, or have a dumb fan service moment or something.

Also this has stopped being an issue, but like Konoha and Satoko’s relationship was really crap for almost half the season, and all the robot stuff (unable to distinguish, developing romantic feelings, and then continuing to treat the real one like crap afterwards, etc) just went way beyond suspension of disbelief for me.

Honestly, the two theme songs get stuck in my head and I get excited to watch the show just for that. I maybe wouldn’t even be watching it still if they weren’t bangers :joy:

I feel like the first half of the show show loved shitting on Satoko for humor. I was almost out after that but came back and it’s been mostly ok for me since then. The absurd humor doesn’t bother me, but the, haha it’s so funny she’s being used, humor does.

I think it’s been a lot better lately (although I was also almost out again after the big boobs episode). I thought all of the dead ninjas in heaven having their own YouTube channel was hilarious and I want way more of that.

I always skip the ED, but the OP and the cut screens are excellent. That sorta thing doesn’t usually make a huge difference for me, but OP definitely grabs me here

Yup

Yeah, I’m really not into this personally. Like fun concept, but they’re annoying

Finished it. Definitely a bit of an oddball. It improved a lot as it went on. There’s plenty to critique, but plenty to enjoy. Wrote a short review. Also it has the honor of being the first yuri where I was rooting for the guy :joy: I apologize for that cursed sentence

Final episode was excellent. Left a series review here

thoughts (spoilers)

My heart absolutely skipped a beat at their lips being super close scene!!

I thought the stuff with the other band was unnecessarily dragged out, and like the audience talking through the set of the band they came to see felt really unrealistic.

Wish the anime could have dealt with the eventual consequences of them getting found out (which I assume will happen at some point), and how they all deal with that - but I imagine that’s just later down the story. Also I roll my eyes at the perfectly timed fireworks… I get it, but still.

I found Otoha’s development/growth in this episode really interesting and satisfying. Early in the show, she felt very one-note (a not I enjoyed) - but over the last few episodes she’s been fleshed out in a really interesting manner

Also I’m in comment jail - someone else plz comment  so this comment doesn’t keep getting longer

Finished 忍者と殺し屋のふたりぐらし S1 | L25 - the final episode was solid enough. It gets a 3/5 from me in the end

A 2009 yuri that I get the impression is basically “unrequited yuri: the anime”… Which I’m in love with so far. Don’t ask me why I like unrequited love so much, I just do. MC is crushing on her best friend, who is also into girls - but seemingly everyone else but the MC. It’s slow and viby and atmospheric, but then randomly very energetic and animated. In some ways it kinda reminds me of リズと青い鳥 | L21 a little bit - tho it’s not that slow and anguished, and isn’t a codependent relationship.

Update: I finished it (only 13 eps). Turns out the anime only adapts the first 12/53 chapters. But anyway, I loved it as much as I’d thought, and indeed the anime is full of unrequited love and pining. Also it got a lot goofier than I expected at times

Update: I finished it (tho had to resort to EN sub), and it was amazing & I wanna rewatch it someday

2006 Sci-fi yuri by Studio DEEN. Linguistically challenging - lots of sci-fi vocab, but not Utena level difficult so far. It seems to be the sorta thing that’s gonna get really deep with military, politics, religion, philosophy, gender, etc themes. While I don’t care for some of the base mechanics - the usual sort of “why does the fate of the nation/world rest on teenagers, and what idiot would build tech that can only be piloted by minors?” and “why do are the spaceships activated by kissing each other and then the ship’s starter sphere thing?” sorta stuff… it’s overall got an interesting atmosphere. One of the main spots of interest is that the characters here are all born female, but at age 17 are required to choose their permanent gender (male or female) - except for the priestesses (ie main cast), who are permitted to delay. Anyway I’m only 2 eps in, but it’s interesting. I’m gonna try to take it at a moderate pace, b/c I’ve got other stuff on my plate rn.

I just realized https://www.gagaoolala.com/ lets you turn off subs. So I will likely pick this back up, since the new season is out next week. It might just manage to be the first JDrama I complete

Finished up some seasonal anime

Once Upon a Witch's Death S1 | L27 In the end, I just wasn’t into this one. I didn’t find Meg endearing, just kind of annoying. It ended in a way that left the show open for a season 2, but if that ever happens, I’ll most likely give it a pass.

ざつ旅 -That's Journey- S1 | L25 I enjoyed this one! It has off-brand yurucamp vibes, but I think that’s why I had so much fun with it. In the final episode, I actually felt happy that Chika found the inspiration for her manga… And then she drew a yuri one-shot. :joy: At some point I’d like to re-watch this one, possibly after I finish the manga.

Be free!

Have just watched episode #1 of SAND LAND: THE SERIES S1 | L27?? and liked it very much. It’s a seasonal of this year’s summer that started a bit early, but originally a Disney+ production of last year, so I was skeptical concerning the animation, but it’s OK.

Well, that I’d like the story, I was sure about before watching, as I read the manga more than 20 years ago (in German). Btw: the first episode contains about 20% of the contents, so it will be interesting to see how they filled the other 12 episodes

I’m in the last six-ish episodes of ふたりはプリキュア Splash Star S1 | L21 and I’m genuinely annoyed that they waited until the last ten episodes to actually start doing anything interesting. If you’re going to make the house cat talk, why wait until the last ten episodes to do it? :sob:

It just feels like they were too afraid to do anything too different from the original Pretty Cure for most of the show.

iirc only the first half of the series covers the Manga, the second half of it adds a second storyline with new characters and some returning ones. I liked it but there are mixed reviews about it so you might have to make up your own mind.

More quick seasonal reviews!

日々は過ぎれど飯うまし S1 | L22 I had really high hopes for this one from the first episode, but I really just wanted a show about cute girls making anime food and it turned out to be mostly a show about cute girls messing around for 20 minutes with only a few minutes dedicated to anime food. I didn’t like any of the girls enough to care about the shenanigans they got up to, so I mostly found myself bored and annoyed. Final review: Not enough anime food!

mono S1 | L22 Good, I liked this one! It’s funny that this was probably my favorite of the season, even though it was mostly a group of girls messing around, when I felt so disappointed by hibimeshi. But I guess the difference is that mono actually made me laugh. More Yamanashi propaganda from afro.

And that’s it for now! The new season starts soon, does anyone have anything they’re looking forward to?

Many things, but probably not things you might like, except maybe: よふかしの歌 S2, but otoh it seems you haven’t yet watched the S1.

…and the Silent Witch anime starts, as well as 水属性の魔法使い.

So things I am interested in, apart from the three above:

怪獣8号 S2, Sakamoto Days S2, Night of the Living Cat (beware of the zombie cats), and 盾の勇者 S4 (sorry I like the series).

ありがとう〜

Only watched the first 2 eps so far, but I like it already, and the vocab set is exactly the sorta stuff I wanna be grabbing rn. Also it appears to be another “little-to-no fanservice” anime. 感謝

Probably:

Not me counting down the hours :eyes:

I’m also looking forward to その着せ替え人形は恋をする S1 | L23 season 2 (what can I say, I love a ギャル/陰キャ pair :joy:)

I would watch Silent Witch if I knew how much it was adapting. But since I’m actively reading the series, I don’t want to risk spoilers.

Oh, that too. I loved the first season and I may renew my Netflix sub to watch this.

Oh and I might try out 公女殿下の家庭教師 | L30??. I started the LN but it was a slog at my level, even with the audiobook. I might see if it’s worth it to read any farther or if I should just DNF.

You could start it and just nope out once you start approaching where you are :woman_shrugging:t4:

I should probably note the start dates for these lol

I like it in yuri (or at least 田所さん1 | L18)… but with het romance, it depends if the 陰キャ character has an actual personality or not (経験済みなキミと、 経験ゼロなオレが、 お付き合いする話。 S1 | L23 for example was passable, but I suspect I’d like it a bit less if I watched it now). I’ll watch this eventually™️ tho just for the cultural literacy

How far are you? It’s seemingly only planned for 9 eps…

Oh I didn’t realize that had an anime. I’m listening to the audiobooks and they’re enjoyable enough. I’m a little sad that they only have the first two books recorded… they’re not quite good enough to read, but they’re great to listen to.

The one in その着せ替え人形は恋をする is good. Since he’s from a family of doll makers he has something going on in his life before he meets the other lead.

Yup. I gave up like 10 pages into the book cuz I found the MC’s internal monologue intolerable. Anime is much better as that goes

Cool - will keep in mind

He gets a lot better, lol. But yeah, I also don’t think I’d want to read them.
