What are you watching today?

Quick question for those in the know - what’s the difference stats-wise between having a show as Watching and having it as Stopped? Is there any difference beyond it showing up in your currently watching queue?

I don’t think so. In books you lose something (maybe your pages per minute?) when the book gets put back into now reading, but I don’t think anything happens like that to tv shows

Edit: it’s possible you might lose watch session data. I basically never use that so I don’t have any stopped shows that I can check that for…

Finally watched this… Not quite sure what to make of it, but it seems like it might be fun. Definitely the right choice to watch with subs… and even then my comprehension wasn’t 100% (and I was too lazy to pause)

瑠璃の宝石 S1 | L30?? - the gemology iyashikei(?). Not bad, but not riveting for me, since it’s not a topic of much interest (though I would have loved it as a kid). Don’t think I’ll continue, but if I did, I’d pre-study the vocab

Watched ep 1 with my friend. This hurt my head, and I do not look forward to watching the rest someday. I suspect it will become my 2nd or 3rd least favorite yuri anime (competing with Strawberry Panic), but who knows… Already caught マリみて and Utena (same director) references.

Watching シムーン S1 | L32 for the 3rd time this weekend. Watched the first 6 eps with EN subs with my friend. Will watch the rest audio-only. Curious to see if/how much my comprehension has improved

機動戦士ガンダム 水星の魔女 S1 | L30 continues to be awesome - almost halfway through

I remember trying to watch this back in the day and dropping it pretty fast. I think I’m just not a fan of Ikuhara’s work.

I can totally get why. I’ve only seen Sailor Moon R & Utena - which I love, but have elements I found frustrating. Then there’s something like さらざんまい S1 | L30?? - which sounds even more unhinged than ユリ熊嵐

Anyway I’m sure ユリ熊嵐 will be painful, but it’s a well-known older yuri, so I’ll watch out of obligation, eventually™️

BTW: the anime was shown exactly 100 years after an incident on Hokkaido, where in 1915 a giant brown bear attacked several people, and therefore also was called 羆嵐, cf. 羆嵐 - Wikipedia

Seasonals:

Ep 1 - CG is a little ugly/not smooth, but episode 1 was a solid start. Probably what I’m most looking forward to, unless Silent Witch steps up. Also I’m impressed - people actually hit things, when they shoot in this

Dropped:

I am kinda interested in My Dress Up Darling… but not enough to watch all of S1 rn… maybe after I’ve finished G-witch, and Bodacious Space Pirates

I’m pretty sure @Naphthalene has been wishing for this since day 1 of picking up the LN.

If, like me, your only interest is in whether those two will get in a relationship or not, I can save you a lot of wasted time: they both get into an heterosexual relationship instead.
The romance part isn’t even well written. Very frustrating.
I don’t consider it a spoiler since the freaking manga shows it happening on page 3 for no reason.
The beginning of arc 3 teleports those two across the world (without girlfriends) so that we can go back to them acting like bros or something. I dropped the series there.

I’m teetering on dropping it. It’s super easy and the art is nice. But I find myself spacing out during the episodes. At the very least I think I’m going to wait the extra week before it comes to Canadian Netflix bc it’s not worth bothering watching on the iPad

I also started watching タコピーの原罪 S1 | L25?? today. The first episode was absolutely heart wrenching. I’ll give it a few episodes to see if I can see it though to the end. It seems like a really well made series, but oof.

Can’t say I’m surprised (also I think I remember seeing you mention this)

It’s originally an LN tho. “The manga spoiled it first” seems a bit 八つ当たり… That said, I don’t consider it much of a spoiler anyway. There’s no BL tag, and at least from the anime it was super clear this wasn’t gonna go BL

I did find a review of the manga that said:

“Somehow MC becomes a master swordsman in 2 pages… The entire series can be summed up as overpowered MC does fantasy things. The only reason other characters exist is so the MC has someone to show his powers off to.”

That was basically my impression of the 2 anime eps, tho to its credit, ep 1 actually portrays the grinding process relatively well (but it’s still boring)

Oh, glad it’s not just me on the border then. Honestly I don’t think it’s bad, but it just feels kinda “baby steps” compared to what I prefer. And the whole “2 schools opposed to each other” setup feels really childish. ●合本版●君めく夜に焦がれて(1)(描き下ろしおまけ付き) | L18 manga does this much more convincingly. I will give the show credit that despite the female lead being a stammering mess who has trouble verbalizing anything, she and the male lead actually properly discuss & communicate about things.

Anyway it’s an easy romance show, so I’ll stick with it for now

This is my remaining maybe, so good to hear. I’ll have to give it a try later, when I’m slacking off taking a break at work

It may be ebook only, but chapters of the manga are included in the LN (many volumes before the relationship happened). That being said, my point was that they probably put it in the OP or the beginning of episode one already for all I know (but I guess you would be aware of it in that case).

This is so bizarre… Gotcha

I probably skipped the OP bc the music was annoying or something :woman_shrugging: Ep 2 ends with them going on a wyvern massacre, which I assume is not very far in.

I watched 12/38 min. It looks good, but not like something I’m in the mood for.

The episode gets better, but then it gets worse again, lol. Also 38 mins was way too much. The next one is 21 mins which I think I can do. We’ll see

I started 処刑少女の生きる道 バージンロード ―そして、彼女は甦る― | L30?? (novel), and it got me curious, so I checked this out. Ep 1 was less difficult than I was worried. Already they’re condensing a lot (at least of the prologue), which isn’t necessarily bad… but given that + the more cutesy vibe, compared to how I imagine it, I’m definitely gonna stay ahead of the novel with this - probly won’t be hard.

わたしが恋人になれるわけないじゃん、ムリムリ!(※ムリじゃなかった!?) S1 | L30?? ep 2 predictably ruined my mood, but it took about 17-18 minutes until that happened - which is a huge improvement from ep 1. Though I’m pretty sure the sexual assault scene is next episode. It will be interesting to see how the story handles that I guess (I’ve heard different things).

I’m watching this as well and the general reactions to it are a bit perplexing. I see the same people who complain about strawberry panic having consent issues praise this, and I feel like this is significantly worse  (I know you don’t like SP though).
My attitude towards this anime is “I watch it if youtube keeps putting the new eps on my radar”. I appreciate the high production value but that’s about it.
Your spoiler got me a bit nervous I would also call what happened this ep SA frankly, and i guess it’s going to get worse?

I’m glad you’re enjoying 処刑少女の生きる道. It’s interesting to hear you imagined it less cutesy, since I watched the anime first and then light novel (only in English as of yet) I always had the anime aesthetics in mind- though I don’t particularly like them (it feels generic). I really like the anime overall though.

I agree this is worse.

a rant/analysis of the inconsistent reactions

I mean consent in the beginning of SP (when Shizuma is just going around randomly kissing girls who freeze up the second she looks at them) was dubious at best, and then later it has the attempted rape for revenge/dominance parts… But like in both of those cases it’s not exactly spun positively. In the former it’s an undesirable deviant behavior of the problematic etoile, who basically gets away with it because people idolize her/the position. The narrative doesn’t exactly condemn it, but it’s clear the characters who actually know her find it upsetting. In the latter the narrative knows it’s messed up, and doesn’t try to pretend otherwise - and it’s largely just there for the prince character to save the girl being assaulted. Correct me if I’m wrong, but it’s generally the latter people complain about, I think.

I suspect this is a people having a binary, non-nuanced view of things. It’s easy for anyone to criticize the big violent attempted rape scene, by the character who’s been evil plotting the whole show. It was a battle between the innocent, honorable but naive, cute girl, and the scheming antagonist.

Otoh Watanare involves a charming (to some people), infatuated character trying to woo Renako (which is what people are here to see), along with the narrative basically trying to play it off as cute and “it’s what Renako actually wants, but can’t admit to herself” with a mix of “but she kinda liked it, so it’s ok”. Anyway from the start, Mai’s behavior has been manipulative, dishonest, gaslighting, etc. she continually lies, breaks boundaries, makes unwanted advances, etc. but the narrative wants you to think it’s cute and charming. So many people swallow it up, bc it’s not the big bad evil (although it’s actually a much more realistic portrayal)

I’m basically watching bc it’s a big community event, and I want to see what (if any) redeeming qualities the story has past this initial arc - so I can say I actually gave it a fair chance. At the very least, Renako is endearing main character, even if her defining personality trait is social anxiety (and she’s much more interesting and proactive than Nagisa)

Same and yes. If you want to majorly spoil yourself: https://www.reddit.com/r/LightNovels/s/wpGSVdGEh9

I find this often happens. And it’s one reason why I try to watch the anime first (plus it helps know the readings for various words). 転生王女と天才令嬢の魔法革命 S1 | L30 and 私の百合はお仕事です! S1 | L27 are other examples for me (tho I read わたゆり after the anime, so it wasn’t till I rewatched it).

Glad to hear you like the anime. My one friend who watched it dropped halfway bc world-building stuff was getting nonsensical and not being explained, but said he was really rooting for the MC & Akari the whole time.

Anything specific that felt generic about it?

strawberry panic and watanare comparison

I actually mostly saw people complaining about Shizuma. While her early scenes are egregious I felt like at some point it sort of stops and her relationship with the mc feels much more even. Ironically I felt like the other character Tamao that people seem to prefer was just as bad in many ways but it was played for comedy so it’s not meant to be taken seriously (for example: taking all her measurements when they first meet with the excuse that they need it for the uniform but it tuning out to be just for her own amusements because uniforms are set sizes)
For the actual rape attempt, I actually forgot this when drawing this comparison. Because honestly this time I find it hard to take seriously, because the character in question is so over the top (ranting about global warning…??) that it becomes funny. But yes this is definitely an in universe antagonists actions. Though later the same character is also groped by her friend, which feels actually worse and more dramatic and everyone is reasonably upset, but in the end I felt like it was forgiven very easily.
Anyway overall SP definitely has these issues, but it seems at least semi-aware of it generally.
With watanare I felt very uncomfortable of the scene going on and on , each time I felt like renako set a boundary it was immediately done away with. Actually , I think the reason I can enjoy SP and Citrus and whatever else that might be “worse” is first, the context in the scene. She basically coerces Nanako layer by layer. First come to the hotel with me, then we have to go into the bath together because friends do it, then oh whoops my hair is undone. It feels premediated and really creepy.
Second, the fan reaction. Seeing everyone talk about how wholesome the series is makes me feel insane. If it had a reputation like Citrus or SP for being problematic or “so bad it’s good”, I would be less bothered about it overall.

wow this seems really bad. I wonder if those chapters being adapted will change the popular conception any? This is crazy because I’ve seen people paise this series for “good communication”. I guess it’s good communication when one side communicates something and the other disregards it entirely.

I specifically meant the aesthetics were generic. I’m not sure I would call the show the most original thing in existence or anything, but not especially derivative either.

I was randomly looking through the LN subreddit you linked and someone mentioned in a thread about that series (to someone asking if there was romance) that it was in both the opening and credits songs/parts  called it.
Also, it’s weird to see people discuss volume 4 as the last one out when I read volume 11 recently …
