What are you watching today?

Is this it?

I might watch sometime :tm:

It’s a 550 page book. There’s no way to adapt it into a movie without severely speeding up and cutting content.

Yes, thank you!

I expected it to not cover everything, but reading this book felt so long and boring in the middle, that I thought a 2-3 hours movie might cover it quite well. That’s why I was surprised

I often find movie adaptations frustrating for this reason

I have volume 1 of the original manga iirc (one of my Japanese pen pals sent it to me) but I don’t really want to buy another full set since I’m running out of space atm.

I’ve been pretty good at noting it down for my language exchanges and the lessons as well as some of the stuff from the audiobooks at native speed (the ones I don’t have on audible but sound super fast :joy:). I’ve also checked some of the anime stuff against the Japanese subs when I can find them, though that usually just points out the ones that aren’t matching the actual audio.

CR has no JP subs for Apothecary diaries unfortunately. At least not in the Uk.

By comparison the UK ones are £35 but don’t have JP subs. So if I really want the JP subs, I would need to buy the JP versions and a region free player since my PS5 is region B and the JP ones are region A

A lot of the Chinese court vocab I already know roughly because of one of the kids books I read and I have a few others in that series as well as a few JP translations of Chinese books. For the apothecary stuff, I know some of it in English from stuff I learned while working in Pharmacy and what I know of Herbalism though the JP vocab is different, it’s more a “learn the vocab” skill than “learn to understand the process” skill. So that could help me. The politics though, that goes over my head in English (though I have been able to glean what I can from the explanations in the anime).

I’m considering doing the jpdb deck for the light novels to try to preempt reading the novels but there’s probably other stuff I should focus more on first. Wish there was one for 凛として弓を引く because I can’t bring myself to spend the time creating one but I might end up having to come back to it at a later date since I’m sinking time into it and not getting much return at the moment

Sry I mixed up which we were talking about… CR has no JP subs period (for anything, in any region) afaik. 薬屋のひとりごと JP subs are available here tho, for future reference: Kusuriya no Hitorigoto · Jimaku

That’s one thing I’m grateful for, US & JP are same region for Blu-ray

Interesting - which one?

It’s been a while since I watched with EN subs, but the politics definitely aren’t simple / I’m just not good at following that sorta thing, unless I really try

I’m hopefully going to get through a good amount of it tonight. If you want, I can send a list of the words I looked up, which you could use to make a deck. Obviously not as thorough as having the whole text… But probly still a good amount

Which reminds me, I should get back to the Flesh & Blood deck

Awesome, thank you  I might need a rewatch with the subs. I couldn’t find them previously (but I didn’t really know how to search for them).

I’m fine for DVDs since I have a region free player. But Blu-ray it has to be B or AB for me. Unfortunately these only come in either B for the UK one or A for the Japanese.

This one, the words I remember are all the ones from when they describe the outer and inner court stuff. It’s obviously not as indepth as Apothecary Diaries but it was enough for me to get by and there is a map at the start of the book for this series that has the info. I discussed it with one of my language exchange partners back when I was reading this and they helped explain the stuff I was struggling with.

Thanks, I appreciate that. Don’t go out of your way for it though. I’m still trying to get to grips with how to make decks from a bulk list and my current highlight tape with notes on it isn’t really working so I think I need a better system

Slowly getting through Shiki, not for lack of interest but I tend to watch like 2 episodes every 1-2 days lol. I generally listen to podcasts because I can do other stuff meanwhile and I don’t feel like I’m losing anything.
I’m on ep. 20/22, I remember watching it like 5 years ago, maybe more, and now I know why I liked it then too : ) it feels pretty good to be watching it without subs now tho

Fwiw I got an external Blu-ray drive that’s region free, and use it with my PC. Probably cheaper than getting an actual player

Awesome, thx!

It’s just copying from Kindle’s database file - very simple. Will PM once I’ve got the list

I didn’t think about that option  that could work. Thanks

No worries

I couldn’t get a digital version so never even thought of this. Thanks in advance

I’ve yet again not been watching any anime. Been rewatching a scattering of Supernatural episodes (because why not) and watching old videos from a YouTube channel I found (Overly Sarcastic Productions) instead. You’d think now that I finished playing Expedition 33 I’d finally jump back into an anime, but nope. :joy: I think it’s because lost momentum on Dress-up Doll and there’s no good anime this season to watch weekly. Is there actually anything worth watching this season that I just missed?

I’ve considered watching Frieren to see what the hype is about, but I’m more likely to be lazy and watch that with English subs. I did see ロックは淑女の嗜みでして S1 | L26 was recently added to Netflix. Is that worth watching? Or how about ウマ娘 シンデレラグレイ S1 | L26? It somehow seems like something I’d enjoy and yet on the surface doesn’t make me want to watch it.

Fwiw it starts off painfully slow. It’s only in ep 5 that it starts to pick up a bit. So I wouldn’t go into it with high expectations at the start. I’ve been thinking about rewatching or picking up the manga sometime in the next few months

That’s great it’s on Netflix now!! Definitely worth watching, imo - a lot of fun. Was my favorite show that season iirc

I have a friend who got pretty into it. I get what you mean though. I’m a bit weirded out by the horse girls thing, but flipping through a bit of ep 1 on YouTube, it seems very 元気 and like it might be touching or something

I thought that but now I’m watching too many series :joy:

藤本タツキ 17-26 S1 | L26 Amazon just dropped the Tatsuki Fujimoto compilation series.

And if you like shoujo then 太陽よりも眩しい星 S1 | L23 is really cute. Just a tall girl and a tall guy in high school together.

And if you want a girl being horny about a dog guy :joy: キミと越えて恋になる S1 | L25

AND if you want to watch something Christmas-y in a very normal way SANDA S1 | L28

I put 最後にひとつだけお願いしてもよろしいでしょうか S1 | L29 on my watch later list because it looks funny but I cannot start another series right now, my brain will explode.

I had to drop that after episode 2…I was like, there’s way too much licking here for me to feel comfortable :sweat_smile:

Not that I’m short on stuff to watch, but this does look kinda cute, if I was gonna check something else out

A friend also mentioned that their relationship is pretty uncomfortable and she dropped it after the first two eps cuz of SA instances (incl. the licking stuff you’re referring to), and the show not handling it well. It already wasn’t on my list, but that sealed the lid for me (not that I don’t sometimes enjoy stuff with SA in it… depends what a show does with it)

I haven’t seen it, personally.

That’s totally fair. Since it’s based on a shoujo manga, I saw it more of a fantasy of “what if I was so irresistible that the hot boy I liked shoved me down? :see_no_evil_monkey:” But the unclear consent is not my favorite.

So your mileage may vary, etc.

I stuck it out past those episodes because, its not quite a car wreck but I can’t stop wondering how far they’re going to go. In episode 4, they kiss and I had not considered what that was going to look like and the answer was “kind of goofy”.

I was also wondering how that was gonna work, and ngl, that was part of why I noped out

I wanted to like the blue furry show, but honestly, besides the awkward and uncomfortable.. stuff, I was also pretty unimpressed with the world building.

I had forgotten you mentioned this before. Maybe I’ll give it a try this week. I’m caught up with Ranma again, and 薫る花はが凛と咲く will be done pretty soon (I’m just watching them as they get released to Netflix here, we’re on 11/13). It’s really weird not having a seasonal anime or drama this season.

Finished スカーレット S1 | L30?? - in the end it was good, but sometimes needed better direction, and especially the last 1/3rd felt particularly meandering. It was compelling enough for me to watch it straight through, at least. And then led to me beginning a rewatch of カーネーション S1 | L27 - which I’m enjoying just as much the 2nd time around. I’m watching without subs, but checking them when I can’t catch things. Doing fairly well with that… and of course the old men are the hardest to understand.

I’m alternating episodes w/ other current shows, so that I can catch up on everything

I caught the first ep of Let's Play クエストだらけのマイライフ S1 | L30?? - it took a little bit of adjusting, but was pretty good. Charles’ voice actor especially was not at all what I was expecting. I wonder whether it would be better in English dub (since it’s originally an English webtoon), or whether it would just sound weird either way.

Tried a few min of this, b/c my friend thinks it looks interesting. The beginning is rather slow and exposition-y, and it wasn’t grabbing me - but I’ll give it a seconds chance in the near future

I started this b/c of the Wakayama-ben (sub-dialect of Kansai-ben), and realized I’ve read the preview of the manga before. Anyway, first ep was fairly interesting. While I’m not always so into the horror/mystery vibe thing, it’s working well here so far. Commenters online said the Wakayama-ben sounded pretty decent (people from Wakayama could find some places where it’s minorly off, but other Kansai speakers found it natural), when I looked it up. Personally I still get a bit 違和感を感じる with the combination of certain typical anime voice acting styles + Kansai dialects, but it’s cuz they sound “cartoony” in a way that I’m not used to.

Watched from the prologue ep, all the way to the latest, 第6話 (ep 7)… Oddly, it’s the only thing from this season I’ve sat down and watched straight through. It’s fun enough, and kind of fresh in some ways, but then by the numbers in other ways, and analytically/critically I have a feeling it’s not really gonna reach its potential. But the world building is a little bit interesting - I particularly like that it’s actively raised the question of polyamory vs monogamy - even if it only feels like it’s actually entertaining one of those. I also was surprised that there were 2 sibling pairings (1st is our MC & his not-actual sister in the prologue, and second are two side characters). I was even more surprised that 第1話 (ep 2) started out with the (fairly cute) male MC naked for about 1.5 minutes… He was kind of interesting in the first 2 episodes, but then just became 普通 male insert. Tbh a lot of the stuff is by-the-numbers pandering to young male audience sorta vibe. The villains are also very caricature-y and one-dimensional (sometimes hilariously so)

Anyway I’m curious about how things changed from “our characters live in super AI society” to "we’ve basically set things back to the 19th century, but also polyamory, chattel slavery, debtors prison, oppressive militaristic rule, etc. All we know so far is that there was an AI war, this guy’s pseudo-sister (who he’s in love with) basically managed to stop it, but then also handed the reins over to like the most corrupt & oppressive people organization (at least they’re that way 250 years later)

Anyway that probly made it sound pretty horrible, but as I said I’ve been enjoying it, despite it being a bit shallow and w/e. It was kinda slow at the beginning (I stopped midway through the prologue, and watched the next ep or two, before returning to the prologue)

This series about a high school hiphop dance club deserves some more watchers imho, if it is just for the dances…
