Yuri/GL/wlw book club - Reading 付き合ってあげてもいいかな

Interesting… I often like seeing it in both mediums, since you can maybe see a different side of things, or a different take on things. It really depends if it’s done well tho. Also sometimes it’s jarring seeing characters portrayed differently from how you imagined them.

I’m iffy on anime → manga adaptations, cuz they are such similar mediums that you’re largely just losing things by going in that direction

I will definitely be joining this one. I have a somewhat hesitant nomination…

殺伐百合アンソロジー: Edge of Lilies

81Hn6dUQv+L.SY466
book type: anthology of short stories as well as essays (technically I think it is still classified as a light novel)
available formats: ebook/physical

content warnings: I don’t know specifically but it’s a yandere anthology, so probably violence, general toxicity in relationshpis, maybe even death? The synopsis makes me think there might be also more serious discussions about homophobia or sexism in the essay sections.

summary (from deepl):

Summary

Killing yuri [deadly lily] 《形動
Obsession, hatred, and murderous intent - the feelings exchanged are not always love.
The feelings that are sometimes hidden, and eventually exposed, mutually gouge and hurt each other.
The story twists and turns, never quite understanding each other, fatally linked, and decisively different.
The film depicts the harsh world and consequences of women who make their own choices and live their lives as they do.

Newly written novels by up-and-coming authors, from pioneers to newcomers
Columns and dialogues that discuss yuri in depth up to the present day
A comprehensive and cutting-edge “sharp” yuri fiction anthology

A super blunt book containing a total of 400,000 characters contributed by a total of 20 members of the circle “Kakuren Federation”, finally available in e-book format.

why am I recommending it: I think the variety of content of short stories and essays might be interesting to discuss in a book club setting.

potential pitfalls: A lot of them! first of all, this is 780 pages. On top of that, I have no clue what the reading level might be but I would guess it’s on the harder side. Then there is the obvious: this is a yandere anthology , which not everyone will be comfortable with.

I’ll add one more: 1/1 anthologies read by this club probably wouldn’t be suggested for this same club again. :joy:

Edit: I figured I’d add some context for newcomers; this is not really a point against your nomination, but the last book we read had about 5% of actual Yuri context despite being a ‘yuri anthology’.

what do you mean? I checked the previous book which was indeed an anthology but a different one…right? I’m confused lol

edit: I understand what you mean now after your edit, fair enough, I was about to post another alternative anyway

Ahh, I was too late, haha, I edited my previous post because it was a bit nebulous for anyone who didn’t join us for the previous book. It was mostly a joke based on the last Yuri anthology we read being everything but Yuri.

I would like just to say that I WAS THINKING ABOUT THIS EXACT BOOK TOO!!
I was thinking really hard about nominating it but then didn’t :rofl::rofl:
I’m glad you nominated it regardless of the hesitations :joy::joy::joy:

Edit; just to point out that I instead nominated something with a “similar” vibe cover wise a.k.a the リリ&アイビー

Nomination number two!

姫守の杜

image
book type: light novel
available formats: ebook

content warnings: none that I’m aware of

summary (from deepl) :

Summary

Suzune is a high school girl living a peaceful life, but a letter sends her into an extraordinary world. Together with her childhood friend Maie, dressed in a miko costume, the witch Anise, and the cat-eared girl Mina, Suzune fights an evil entity called the Evil Spirit. When she remembers her past memories and the role assigned to her, Suzune’s destiny begins to unfold. This is the start of a yuri type novel.

why I’m recommending it: Although I already have this novel set as “reading” on here, I read less than 10% of it, I didn’t even get to the part mentioned in the synopsis. However thanks to that I can say it’s reasonably easy for a novel so I think it might be a good approachable choice for a fantasy pick. It’s also relatively short at 180 pages and you can read the prologue and first chapter for free online #百合小説 #百合 姫守の杜【サンプル】 - Novel by なよ - pixiv

potential pitfalls: if you really want to read a physical edition , I don’t think it’s available.

HiHi! I noticed you didn’t create a page for it on natively so I went ahead and did it lol
could you put it in the title URL instead of the amazon one?

edit: thank you :heart_hands:

So when’s the cut-off for nominations?

Good question
For now I was thinking of until the 14th of June (partially because there wasn’t much movements for nominations so I wanted to give extra time and partially because I’m kinda overflowing with stuff that I gotta do so I’m trying to not give myself too much into too many things, as you’ve seen in the web novels things I have a tendency to just take off with something once I start and it’s bad right now :joy:)

If it’s too long of a time let me know and I’ll make it shorter

I think the 7th might be better (and push ppl to nominate more, since it’s closer)… But maybe others would prefer longer? It’s fine either way, but if it’s gonna wear you out, better to wait the extra week.

I won’t be able to nominate anything until this weekend, but either way is fine with me.

I’d prefer earlier voting as well, but if you got too much going on, you got too much going on. So do what’s best for you.

Will make it the 7th then :+1::saluting_face:

I just found this thread (I’m not that active on learnnatively). I have quite a few Yuri manga series I’m currently following. I think I’ll follow along and participate in voting if there is something that seems interesting to me. Especially finished manga and any novels.

I’ve wanted to get into Yuri novels, but couldn’t really find anything. The novels seem quite different from the typical manga. Lots of sci fi, fantasy etc rather than the contemporary setting and slice of life or drama genre I prefer. The one light novel series with Japanese high schoolers I read (安達としまむら), I didn’t like at all. And now I don’t really have any faith in that category (contemporary yuri light novel).

hello hello!!!
what an honor for the 百合 thread creator to come to us!!!
I should probably have put a link to the bookclub there or something in case someone following would have wanted to join, sorry about that :joy:

at least we know the previous read wouldn’t have been to your tastes

feel free to nominate some of the things you’re following!!! :heart_hands: :heart_hands: :heart_hands: :heart_hands: :heart_hands: :heart_hands:

Never mind, I don’t think I’ll nominate anything after all. The ones I was considering are probably better for me to just read on my own when I’m in the mood. Instead I’ll just vote for one of the manga already nominated.

sad to hear, was kinda looking forward to it :smiling_face_with_tear:

Lol.

Science fiction was actually the genre I was most interested in before I learned Japanese.

What are actually the rules/customs about reading series in book clubs? My preference would probably be to read only finished manga series (so none of the ones I’m currently following) or the first volumes of novel series.

changes from one book club to another, if you have any questions about the ones here that aren’t in the first message or you want to change something just say and if it’s reasonable we can change them or play around things

In that case things in the list that would suit your preference right now look like -
completed manga:
君に紡ぐ傍白 1 | L20
青い花 1 | L26
はなにあらし 1 | L18
雨でも晴れでも 1 | L22

light novels (both are fantasy though lol):
姫守の杜
technically we have a nomination for the manga version of 転生王女と天才令嬢の魔法革命 but it’s based on a light novel

honestly I would love to try out a more modern setting yuri light novel, will look out for one though if someone else could nominate that would be best (I don’t know if you’ve noticed but I kinda hijacked most nominations at this point  )
