Discussion ground rules

  • Any spoilers, for the current chapters must be behind spoilers or detail curtains. When we get further in you don’t need to hide details that were revealed in previous chapters.
  • Always mention where you are in the book when discussing, ideally by chapter so people reading different versions have a clear point of reference.
  • Feel free to read ahead if it’s exciting! But please refrain from spoiling ahead of the appropriate week
  • If you have a question about grammar, vocab, cultural things, etc - ask! That can be part of the discussion too and I’m sure some folks would be happy to help.
  • Even if you don’t read the chapter(s) in time, you are still encouraged to post in the thread for that reading once you have finished it. I advise not reading ahead in the threads as you may see spoilers.

Enjoying the manga so far! As usual, a manga gets +1 from me just from having adult main characters.

One part I did find a bit strange was at the end, where Asako is trying to leave since she’s not happy with the idea of having her landlord live in the attic, while Miyako is trying to convince her otherwise. Then a message arrives on her phone from Hato with Miyako’s picture from her idol days - the weird thing for me is that Asako even bothers to check her phone and messages while she’s in the middle of hurriedly trying to get out and listening to the Landlord at the same time…

Though not sure if I misunderstood something in that scene.

Completely echo your opinion, I only vote for picks for this bookclub which includes adult characters lol

I also found it a bit weird. Could it be that she thought it might be an urgent work message? The end of the chapter made it almost seem like she accepted renting the house (+ landlord) because she saw it was Miyako… or maybe she was too shocked/flustered to take a logical decision.

It was also a bit surprising for me that she recognized her right away after only seeing a single photo where Miyako had a different hair colour, and probably makeup/different style overall (with her glasses, it seems like she’s putting an effort to hide her identity).

I totally forgot we were reading this :sweat_smile:

Based on my current book club load, I’ll probably read this in the last week or two of the club and plan to finish it with the group (such as it is …).

I’ve started reading it late, but only just started chapter 2.

Chapter 3

I was a bit confused about the stalker situation. So she was being stalked by a specific (female) fan, who seemed to lose the interest in her once she saw how her real personality was like (during the date)? And then the stalker just… gave up? Or is it just not explicitly shown what happened to the stalker?

I agree it’s a bit confusing. As far as I understand, the plan was Miyako would just act like she usually does at home, which is a far cry from her idol image of cleanness and primness. This would cause the stalker to think they have the wrong person.

The chapter itself does not explain why the stalker gives up, but since the plan succeeded I guess that’s the main reason. It does seem that Miyako has done some other things to change her appearance (her hair looked black in her idol pictures, but now seems to be a light color, so it’s probably dyed?), so I am guessing people might not be immediately sure it’s her.
