Now I’m just waiting for Inuyasha (which vexingly still hasn’t shipped )… I think it will probly fit well with the 2nd row of Inuyasha when it gets here. Edit: Suruga-ya order just came - totally forgot about that!!
Can you explain how I’m supposed to search for things on suruga-ya? Japanese doesn’t work and the romaji and English seems hit or miss. I’m supposed to use the English .com version to ship outside of Japan, right? For example, I search for 満月をさがして on the Japanese version of the website and find a full 7 volume set, but I can’t find more than a couple stray volumes on the English site.
They’re the same site, just the language switches. So find whatever you’re looking for on the JP version, and then switch the lang back to EN when you’re ready to order. It’s not like Amazon, where they’re two separate sites.
I do see the language option on https://www.suruga-ya.com/ now that you mention it, which does help with the search. It seems like this site is still different from https://www.suruga-ya.jp/ though, and doesn’t have what I saw over there.
Ohhh I guess there are two different sites… Sry I forgot about the .jp version. I only ever use the .com one. That’s too bad about the selection being different. Maybe if you turn on “show sold out items”, the stuff that’s missing will show up… Not that that really helps too much
The Japanese site has a link to some forwarding company or something, but I’d assume all the free shipping stuff goes away with that. Oh well. Thanks for your help.
Curious about other folks here - do you usually read w/ the dust covers on or off? Is there any particular reason one option would be better than the other? (particularly wrt keeping books in really good condition)
I leave obi, dust jacket, etc on, partly because I don’t feel a strong urge to change the way the book came from the shop and partly that usually the dust jacket image is nicer than the book proper. But I’m not the one to ask about keeping books in pristine condition – for example the book I was reading over lunch now has a small orange spot on one page where a drop of spaghetti sauce splashed on it…
I remove the obi since they tend to be thin and easy to rip and get in the way. I keep the cover on since I had issues with the text on the spine getting messed up when I removed them and I don’t find them to be that intrusive.
to be clear, I only mean while reading. I absolutely leave them on otherwise. I’ve had other books where I don’t care as much, but w/ manga I won’t let myself read while eating (one reason digital is convenient at times)
Mm, I’ve had that happen to one before (not sure it was during reading tho). Mostly I don’t find them intrusive though.
Do you put the obis back on afterwards? I feel torn cuz I kinda like them, but the cover picture is generally nicer. Theoretically I could keep them in a bag somewhere, but I’d want some sort of ordering system, to know which volumes they’re for.
That is certainly something in favor of the dust jackets then!
Most of my manga is secondhand, so I really don’t care unless it’s vintage and/or survived the Great Manga Purge of 2010 when I decided that I’d never be able to read any of my books and gave most of them away (RIP my manga).
When I do care about my books, I have a number of cloth covers that fit either the small Japanese book size or the standard manga size. It’s apparently popular in Japan to both want to keep the book pristine, but also be able to hide what you’re reading in public. If you buy books from a new bookstore, sometimes they’ll ask if you want it covered, so I have a few that are wrapped in paper, also (the first time I had no idea what he was asking me ).
If you live anywhere near a Daiso, I’ve picked up a few from there for quite cheap (although my most adorable ones are of course gifts from friends from Japan).
I started reading a second-hand manga with a plastic sleeve cover, and think that’s probably the answer for me… Though I’ve been experimenting with stacking my manga sideways for aesthetic purposes, and they’re inconvenient for that (can’t get things totally flush, particularly if they’re not a perfect fit)
Given many book covers, that’s not exactly surprising
That’s good to know. There’s one 40-60 minutes away from me (depending on subway status)
I’ve officially joined team “obi off”… I like them, but they block the really beautiful covers, and also just make things a bit harder to neatly handle. So I’m keeping any future ones in a ziplock bag together.
I have not read any of my other Miyabe Miyuki novels, and yet I’ve bought a new one. At least it’s normal-sized and not a chonker?
Not all of them came with a bookmark (sad), but I’m glad the Shuueisha one did. I love the little reading kitties, and I’m pretty sure this is one I don’t have.
