Physical Media Megathread

I don’t think they ship the books from Japan though; they look to me as if they were bought and sold locally. Paris has quite a large Japanese community, they had 16,000 inhabitants in 2018, now down to 10,000, it seems.

I got in two lovely books today from @暁のルナ.

Wow, I never realized 本好き was this thick…

Wooow, enjoy Shirayuki :heart_eyes_cat: :heart_eyes_cat:

That’s what I also imagine for the ones I’ve been to in LA. There’s about 70/30 English language manga to Japanese…I would assume it’s just books that people have gotten in Japan or new from bookstores locally rather than BookOff importing them.

Update 1.5 years later: New, much bigger shelf! But still overflowing, haha.

Also, I think I’ve read every single book in the previous shelf photo except for 狐笛のかなた | L30, which I kind of gave up on because I’ve heard it’s not her best work. Maybe someday I’ll read it just to finish out the picture though…

Nice collection! My eyes keep getting drawn to 放浪息子 being out of order. :joy: That and how nice the 本好き volumes look. I do love the convenience of ebooks, but something is certainly lost when you can’t enjoy the design of the physical book.

My CD Japan order came
But I just realized that I bought the first はなにあらし digitally so now I have 2-12 physically. I’ll need to remedy that at some point…

Nice haul

They’ve been taking forever to ship my order for some reason… maybe you got the last copies of はなにあらし :stuck_out_tongue:

That’s weird because I know we ordered within a few days of each other. I’m only a little sorry if I cleared them out :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Yeah, who knows… I also ordered the トゲナシトゲアリ CD+Blu-ray… So maybe that’s holding it up.

In any case, nbd. I have more than enough physical manga to keep me busy for a while lol

Two of these books (流浪の月 and ひと) were recommended by my tutor as books that should be a bit easier for me to read due to language used though one of them has no furigana. The two TO junior books I bought on a whim (I liked the cute covers and one has a dragon on it, enough said :joy:) with the plan to get the light novels later (hopefully the language from these will help with that jump) and the Apothecary Diaries was suggested previously by one of my Japanese penpals. I don’t do things by halves so got the full set for Apothecary Diaries. I also like that the TO junior books came with 4koma bookmarks . Todays haul:

It’s literally cuz of one volume of はなにあらし that’s on backorder till early June :sob: … the book pg even lists it as in stock

If I’d realized, I would have left it out… almost wanna email them and ask them to just remove it at this point… tho I’m guessing they wouldn’t?

I caved and bought stuff from Surugaya during their latest free shipping promotion, even though they didn’t have the manga I really wanted…

(Can you guess who my favorite seiyuu is lmao)

haul + comments

シンデレラ・ティース by 坂木司 – I saw this at HPB not that long ago… for $20. (I guess JP books fall under “rare,” bc in what world is that half the price of ¥571? Not this one, that’s for sure.) $3.20 is a lot more like it lmao
貝に続く場所にて by 石沢麻依 – And with this one I unexpectedly have a book for the “bad cover” bingo square, because this copy has a different cover to on Natively! (I’m guessing that one’s the 単行本)

One Day Trip    vol.
Voice Stars vol. 27 – Bought because I saw 梅原裕一郎’s and 伊東健人’s names lmao. I pulled this out of the package last, meaning I now recognized 西山宏太朗 as having voiced Momose, so I thought, “Oh, is that about the 新しい上司はど天然 anime?” Yes, yes it is. So I actually bought four items related to this series and didn’t even realize it lmao

・side story Thank You my star by 雅壱/蛇龍どくろ (大きくふりかぶって - abemiha)

CD – I didn’t realize when I ordered it that this came with a 4-pg manga booklet + chibi momoshiro acrylic stand/keychains! The little white peach–patterned jammies… Also that not all of the seiyuu are the same between it and the anime… There’s no UmeYuu… (I don’t know what’s worse, getting all new seiyuu for the anime, or only a few being new. I hope it won’t bother me too much though because I really love this series.)
BOND – A Switch game I’ve been wanting forever but couldn’t find on my usual sites. I’m so happy Surugaya had it, bc it looks really interesting.
NEO – I watched these on the official website when they came out (there was a fansub, but I think they only did a couple eps, and they were poorly done on top of that). I very much could not understand much at all at the time, but I fell in love with it anyway. Akechi Kogorou VII is a meitantei voiced by Hosoyan who faints at the sight of his own blood, what more could you want? Anyway, I’m looking forward to seeing how much I can understand now, when I’ve actually studied JP some!
・宝石商リチャード氏の謎鑑定    輝きのかけら    番外編    こだわりラーメン – A limited-edition short story booklet that I guess was sold at one store with 輝きのかけら…? In any case, it says to read this only after reading the novel, so it’s gonna be a bit… (I found this when trying to see if they had the first vol of the anime on BD. They did not—unless they did and it was missing something, I don’t remember. I valiantly resisted buying any of the other novels and making this order even bigger. I’m not even halfway through the first!)
・UMake Photo Book    Encounter – Even though I did flip through it a bit upon taking it out of the package, it didn’t even register that it’s L→R until I stacked 君旅 on top of it…

And the new bookmarks:

I adore the Hey Diddle Diddle one, especially for the pun in the final line.

transcription

(I also ended up looking up the EN lyrics because I could not for the life of me remember if it was “the little dog laughed to see such sport” or “[…] such fun” …turns out it was originally “sport” but it will get changed out for other words—including “fun”!)

It never even occurred to me to buy games from Surugaya… are they reasonably priced?

Some are… but then some will be higher than list price (even used!). A lot of their listings will be missing at least one of the extras that came with it and/or the box, too, if you care about that sort of thing. That seems to be the case with DVDs/BDs, as well. This one was ¥6,128, or a little under 40 USD. I don’t remember what its list price was, but as new Switch games generally go for $60 (or even $70 now??), I still considered that a deal lol

I recently bought something like a dozen games from them (mostly PS2 and DS/3DS)–they mark up their products on the english site, sometimes quite a bit. With the price of older used games + current exchange rate + free shipping promo it can come out to cheaper than other places, especially if you’re only making a small order.

They also have used game consoles too, though you might have just as much luck on your local ebay. I find their product quality descriptions to be difficult–there doesn’t seem to be any way to read the original Japanese, only the MTL.

Example of some that had the original sticker vs what I paid

Switch games are largely priced around ~6,000 yen or so, though some (Like Digimon Survive which I’ve been eyeing) are cheaper (~2700).

Makes sense, tbh. The „free“ shipping must be covered somewhere.

Mmm, I had one cdjapan order where the book page and my in progress order disagreed about the in stock status - in that case the status on the order page was more pessimistic than what eventually happened. I think the book page part is auto populated with data they get from their suppliers/publishers, and this doesn’t propagate to in-progress orders. (I did also once have an order that seemed to simply get “stuck” and wasn’t unstuck until I dropped them an email.)

Just switch the site language back to Japanese, it’s the same site (they also have a Japan-specific store, but that’s entirely separate, and switching the site language won’t take you there). Search works better in JP too

That’s somewhat encouraging

That’s less encouraging lol

Anyway, thx for sharing

I really don’t know how they keep it up, everytime I ordered from them, on the invoice the shipping cost they paid was almost double what I paid for the books.
