Physical Media Megathread

I know right? I had to get it for that reason!
The obi also mentions all this crazy stuff like nuclear threats, Japanese religious cults, North Korea, and terrorism, so I am expecting some kind of international thriller. :joy:

I spot our favourite trash questionable taste but high-brow author. :eyes:

Sliightly random assortment of genres from my recent cdjapan order :joy: Giving myself lots of options for reading material next year.

First two volumes of the junior (full furigana) version of 本好き, I think those two volumes cover the first volume of the normal version. Never read a LN before so just thought I’d jump in to a popular series and see what the vibe is. The full-furigana version and the normal version have separate listings on Natively, which is kind of annoying. Do I read both volumes and then mark the normal version as read, or mark the junior version?

Flesh & Blood is kind of a wishful thinking read since it’s harder, but I got a volume anyways so I can look at it while working up to it with some easier stuff. Or I might just jump in early and struggle.

夜警 and かがみの孤城, recs from @cat and @bungakushoujo

And japanese Howl’s Moving Castle. I looooove this book in English and have read it like 8 times. I imagine it’d be tricky in Japanese for someone who hasn’t read it, (lots of plot threads that come together slightly confusingly, which is kind of how the author always writes) but I should be fine since I basically have the book memorized. I’ll probably read this when I want something chill and comforting.

!!! Flesh&Blood spotted!!

If you do decide to jump in, feel free to ask questions in the F&B club here or the F&B club over on WK; I routinely stalk both, haha.

I would just mark the version you own. The junior versions sometimes change the content of the original book (not sure if that’s the case for 本好き necessarily, granted) so they’re not 100% identical.

I’m so excited hahaa but I peeked at it and it would definitely be a challenge, so will read a couple other books first.

I will definitely be in the threads! The WK club read most of the volumes, right?

ooh I’m looking forward to reading that, too, at some point in the not too distant future (after working through my tbr, current clubs, et etc ), but who knows, a year is long

The thing with its difficulty is that the action parts are not thaaat hard, but then you get a historical infodump that I don’t think you can prepare for very well  There are just lots of unusual vocab and you need to either learn them beforehand somehow, look them up or ignore them :woman_shrugging:

So my take is that you can’t really prepare, you can only jump in or wait…

Isn’t the hardback so pretty too?? :open_mouth:

Hahaha yeah, my reading plans may be too ambitious but we shall see!!

Hmmm, I’m hearing a lot of “jump in asap” here…. :ship::anchor::pirate_flag:

We have a few people who’ve read around the 10 volume mark, and a handful who’ve read to about volume 16-17 or so. Early on in particular me, @pyororon (though they’ve been busy with school as of late), and @nikoru are good to tag here or there off the top of my head. There are others who’ve read the book here in the Natively club, I just don’t remember off the top of my head.

It really is nice. I already own the book on kindle and audiobook, but maybe I’ll buy the physical hardcover too. It’s my favorite Japanese book, so I could see myself reading it again.

so - question on the printed version. The bookwalker preview shows a fair amount of furigana (not the majority, but more than just names). Wow, that would make that a fair bit easier. Does the printed version have that?

Sounds like a good reason to buy a physical copy! That’s my rule for English books, to only buy stuff that I would reread. For Japanese… I just do whatever :joy:

Ok, just peeked inside. Yes, there is partial furigana. The balance is a little lower than other partial furigana books I’ve read, but it really didn’t look too bad. The kanji on the first couple of pages also looked mostly pretty common.

This thread has me wondering if this week’s cdjapan order will have a certain book added to it before I click payment :face_with_peeking_eye:

Between me, you, @shitsurei and @mic we can have a whole new generation of the f&b book club!

You guys are doing the BL god’s work. As @nikoru mentioned, the info dumps can be a bit much in terms of vocabulary, but the action’s fast and fun. :sparkles: When/If you guys ever want to tackle it, if there’s interest, we could totally spin up another club round for that book.

I’ve been trying to see if I can make a custom deck on Bunpro for the book, now that users are able to create their own decks. I’ll definitely share it here when it gets finished.
