I’ve only ever dabbled in classical Japanese, and I think I’ll leave it at that. Dabbling is fun, like solving a puzzle. But reading full blown classical literature sounds like torture to me!
Here’s my favorite classical Japanese reference for 5 years future you.
I find Shakespeare annoying enough to read and he’s technically modern English. I can’t imagine ever applying myself enough to actually read classical Japanese.
I’m mostly joking, but I can see myself being the kind of sicko who’s like ‘okay, now that I know modern Japanese I better read genji monogatari in the original form.’ We’ll see if that ever actually happens though
Very early in my Japanese learning career I proudly brought a digital version on BookWalker „for later“, only to discover at some point that it was just scanned pictures (needless to say, it was very early in my Japanese book reading career as well )
Thank you for this, I have a thread on Wanikani about classical poetry where I try to make a list of useful references for people who are interested in this subject, I will add this website it looks great
You can find classical litterature on the UVirginia Japanese Text Initiative. Here is a link towards the Pillow Book. The original website was down last year if I remember correctly but fortunately it’s still present in the Wayback Archives.
