If I had known this, I would have joined I thought everyone would have been way ahead of me (I’m still on chapter 1).
Yeah, I paused after life stuff came up last autumn, Shannon hasn’t started, lots of people have slowed down around ch 3, and occasionally new people join in, and anyway, people just post little messages about where they are so it’s OK we’re in different parts is the book - it’s worth joining!
Yeah, that’s by one of the people who worked on the old Mangajin magazines, and apparently the panels are all from there, which is why they’re older manga. Presumably the rights to use those panels were all in one convenient bundle with the US publisher and didn’t need to be renegotiated one by one.
Incidentally the Mangajin magazine sounds like it was pretty neat back in the day if you were at that just starting to immerse point – it had longer manga selections with full following page translation, as well as bits of explanation of language and culture points.
Cool, I will join when I pick it back up in the next few weeks as I think I’m going to restart it (I had literally only started the bit just after the listening sections on the first chapter).
I picked it up way back when I first started working through stuff during Covid. Think I got about half way through but had very little understanding at the time (I had literally only just learned Hiragana and Katakana with a few random nouns under my belt ). I should probably read through it again and see how much makes way more sense now.
Didn’t know it was from a specific magazine though, and didn’t really think too much about how they had access to publish the stuff they did.
Rest of 美少女戦士セーラームーン | L25 came, plus this month’s Yurihime, which I haven’t added to the site yet
I’m so in love with these covers can’t wait to start vol 2… Tho maybe I should reread from vol 1, just cuz it’s been so long
I’m kinda wishing I’d gotten them all new now, cuz you can tell which ones are Suruga-ya bc of the mild discoloration (a little more pronounced irl), and Kodansha’s shitty spine graphic alignment (seriously, why can’t they make things match, like every other company?!)
Nearly a year and a half of Yurihime
I broke my “no more books bought this year” rule (TBF I was going to break it next month anyway when I get the next Ruri Dragon but hey ho).
My local (ish) Waterstones now has a shelf section for Japanese books - in Japanese - so I picked up a few books stupidly not checking prices til they gave me the bill
But I got 3 manga (first book of each series of Dragonball, Detective Conan and ONE PIECE because I have it in English) , a junior bunko (Suzume) and another book I hadn’t seen its type before but will read. My understanding is that it is about the thoughts and inspirations behind Spirited away (but I could be wrong).
たとえとどかぬ糸だとしても | L25 1-7 (just need 8) - has been on my radar a while. Contrary to the subtitle, she’s in love with her sister-in-law, not her sister I’m expecting some complicated, unrequited love dynamics
乙嫁語り | L24 2-3 (missing the other 13 Vols) - 19th Century, Silk Road/Central Asia. Has also been on my list for a while
I considered buying a BL title or two I stumbled across, but flipping through them, they seemed more graphic and aggressive than I was in the mood for. And I just don’t know that genre well enough to take a chance
They also had almost all of 外科医エリーゼ | L24?? - which were full color & really tempting, but I’m so over-budget as it is, and I haven’t read or watched any portion of it yet… Which at $7 USD/vol, I’d want to be really sure… Maybe I should have tho:
I stopped myself from getting the Sailor Moon figure again, because it’s cheaper online. I do really want to start collecting them tho
As someone who has only ever dabbled in BL my recommendation for someone who wants a nontoxic intro to the genre is Old Fashioned Cupcake. Obviously for physical this would mean stumbling across it, but for a general recc it stands
Will keep in mind, tho neither Bookwalker nor Amazon are letting me preview it… But flipping through ch 5.5 and vol 2 ch 1 on Mangadex the sexual scenes there also seem really aggressive and uncomfortable to me tho (tho much less graphic than the ones in the bookstore)
I’m definitely amused at the English synopsis calling 29 & 39 a May-December romance tho
There are sex scenes??? I only ever saw the drama which is as PG as PG gets Whoops
just finished this one
nothing naughty - sfw (cute fluffy) super easy quick read
but I’ve only read vol 1 … still have to read vols 2 and 3
edit: sorry replied to the wrong post
also this one is pretty easy and iirc sfw
I can second @shuly’s suggestion of 僕らの食卓 | L20; it and its sequel have no sex scenes and are incredibly wholesome. I’ve really enjoyed BARBARITIES | L24?? in English (haven’t read the fourth book yet, but there were no sex scenes iirc in 1-3, though maybe a page or two of some risque scenes every now and then actually, I might need to reread. I just remembered a pair of side characters who are a bit more graphic. I do still recommend the series if you’re interested, though). 吸血鬼と愉快な仲間たち | L26 should also be a good choice if you can find it.
I’d rather get l give recs for stuff in any pictures you post, since I know how hit and miss it can be finding stuff in book stores, but I don’t recognize any in the picture you posted.
I will third it
It’s sweet and adorable and absolutely won over the BL club when we read it.
I added the table & the barbarities series to my (very eventual) list. 吸血鬼 one isn’t convincing me, and the sample preview is too small to tell anything. So passing on that
Added this as well
No worries - they weren’t really on my radar in the first place, and thankfully (for my wallet) I won’t have a chance to go back anytime soon.
I haven’t read this and I’m not sure I will, but the art is beautiful.
There’s a live action as well. Read it before it was ever a live action. have seen the sequel live action but haven’t read the manga yet (though it’s here with all the other books just waiting).
glad some suggestions may work out well
but fair warning not everything is SFW
… that my library is … uhhhh shall we say diverse
I read the sequel and watched the drama but I didn’t know there was a drama for the sequel. I’ll definitely need to find that!!
I’m confused - you literally wrote that it’s sfw? Or do you mean the table one? I’m (theoretically) fine either way, it’s more about the particular depiction
What’s the 京都 series? I can’t quite make out the name, but it looks cute. Also hi! long time no see
If you end up reading that N2 manga grammar book let me know how it is. I’ve got on my kindle wishlist, but it’s like 1,500 yen and I’m cheaper than that.
