I read the first three. It’s okay, but there’s better food manga out there. I might put futari yaiteru above it tbh. (But I already bought the whole lot, so I guess I’ll read it eventually)
Better in what way(s)?
It’s been a minute since I read it and I was probably a bit worse at reading at that time, so it could just be an effort-to-reward ratio thing, but I found the framing device (stepsisters getting to know each other through cooking) was kind of… not super compelling? But for 33y a volume it’s more than fine tbh.
Just thinking through the food manga I like (which are mostly slice of life), I think they mostly involve more adult characters and the narratives aren’t centred solely around high/middle schoolers I guess. Like, 隣は何を食う人ぞ is about uni students, 甘々と稲妻 has a one-parent family, 焼いてる二人 is about a newly married couple (I think they’re in the 30s). (ダン飯 is its own thing in this category I suppose). That’s not to say cooking manga about high schoolers can’t also be interesting, I’m just looking at common threads about what I like I guess.
Kadokawa sale on over at Bookwalker until 11 June, Up to 50% coinback return and 20% off some vol sets (note the sets don’t discount if you already own books in them, which is really annoying). Don’t forget to check actual prices and how many vols you get to see how much you’re paying per volume.
I can at least rec Dungeon Meshi (just got a Seiu/Galaxy award actually)
Hakumei and Mikochi is also popular
Aside from that other stuff that jumped out at me. Both the manga and LN versions of Spice and Wolf
She Likes to Cook, She Likes to Eat
Isekai Shokudou/Restraunt in another world (I think, I always mix this up with the other isekai restraunt one)
I thought it was that the items you already bought don’t discount, but that the rest of them would. Is that wrong?
Sorry bad phraseology on my part but I need to doublecheck the terms. My understanding is, eg if you have vol 1 and 2 in a 8-book set, it’s not going to be like ‘you get vols 3-8 for 20% off’, you still are buying effectively vols 1-8 for 20% off. But I need to re-read the terms.
first volume of 光が死んだ夏 is 99 yen!!
Oooh, the deal’s on Amazon too! Thanks!

I found that searching up books on the Japanese site and then pasting the product code into the English site seemed to work best, but oddly some items that were in stock on the Japanese site weren’t available on the English version still it’s by far my cheapest source of Japanese books!
Not sure which Japanese site you mean… but the English search function is terrible. https://www.suruga-ya.com/ja/ is their global site, but with the language set to Japanese - and the search works as you’d expect there.
I can’t order anything till next month at least… so I’m just slowly stocking my cart rn, in preparation
Oh interesting, I didn’t think of changing the language! I was switching between their domestic site and the global one this is the domestic one I meant https://www.suruga-ya.jp/
Right, figured that was the case. It’s a common source of confusion
