🎮 Video Game + Visual Novel Natively Levels

Yes, I’m using that too! But I had to clean up a lot since the formatting is weird and they use a lot of katakana for emphasis. It’s really a helpful page also if you just want to read without playing.

Recently got the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster bundle, I’m playing them in English since it’s my first time playing them, but since I’ve already played FFIV before (and recently!) I’m thinking I might try it in Japanese!

I’ve played a bit of 1 in Japanese, and it was pretty easy from what I remember: very, very little dialog, with the main focus being able to keep track of important key items and town names.

Recently I played through Yakuza 0 / Yakuza Kiwami / Silent Hill: The Short Message / Final Fantasy VII / Final Fantasy VII Remake + DLC.

To rank them from easy to hard:

Silent Hill: The Short Message
Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy VII Remake + DLC
Yakuza Kiwami
Yakuza 0

Every game has subtitles and every game (except the original FF7) has voice acting. Even though the FF games are fantasy, the dialogue is usually quite easy, even for beginners who would be B1 or something like that. Yakuza is much harder because of the slang, the use of outdated words/expressions and a shitload of dialect.

Yakuza 0 and Kiwami are both playable with Agent. FF and Silent Hill are not hookable, which could turn the ranking upside down, as it would be much easier to look up words than just rely on listening.

I’d generally recommend playing the FF7 OG first, so you’re familiar with the story, and then playing the remake. The knowledge from the easier OG game will make the remake game a bit easier.

Not sure if this is the place to ask or not so I’ll try and max tell me to delete

Has anyone tried playing dead by daylight in japanese?

I was thinking of trying but wanted to check if someone could tell me a level before lol

I think the easiest way to quickly find out whether you can read it is to check people playing it in Japanese on YouTube.

I haven’t tried it in Japanese, but Dead by Daylight doesn’t really require much reading outside of the perks and add-ons. If you know the perks and add-ons pretty well or already have your killer/survivor set up how you like them you could get away with playing it in any language pretty easily.

It’s because I don’t know all the perks well yet that I was thinking about it actually lol
Guess I’ll love to see :joy:

I didn’t consider that!! Thank you :heart_hands::heart_hands::heart_hands:

Adding some of mine as well, especially since I’ve been planning on playing more in Japanese

ポケットモンスター ルビー / エメラルド L19

Both GBA - copying @eefara s description from her home post since it’s probably the best explanation on these games in Japanese

ポケットモンスター 赤 L20

Game Link
GB - same as the others but I will point out that this one has more weird slang words than other pokemon games so I put it a bit higher

NEEDY STREAMER OVERLOAD L30

Game Link
PC - the vocab itself has a tendency to spike sometimes but so far it’s not impossible to measure (in terms of vocab only I would put it L27).
The main difficulties lies in:

  1. the font which is difficult to recognize the kanji shape from if you don’t know it, so looking up kanji is extra difficult even if you have a good “by drawing” recognition.
  2. some of the content is times a.k.a the live chat administration mini game which makes reading and comprehensing fast enough necessary to some degree, even if it’s not impossible speed
Dead By Daylight L22?

Game Link
PC/PS/XBOX
technically there’s another version for Switch/Mobile

Sometimes there are difficult words but overall the sentences, lore stories and the explanations are simple enough for N3 level.
Whenever I don’t understand something it has to do with them explaining things a bit weirdly and the game not always making sense on the first try, which happens in English as well, and from what I’ve understood to other people too.

Overall in terms of perk and power explanations, even if you don’t get things you can guess from in-game experience what they are, and there’s a lot of repetition on term use from the “daily rituals” or similar enough archive missions.

Fall Guys L19

Game Link
PC/PS/XBOX/SWITCH/MOBILE
very little text and very repetitive, great opportunity for making Japanese gaming friends on twitter 募集 as long as you make sure they’re open to VC (they’ll say if it’s on discord or PSVC on the post)

頭痛 L30

I remember this having some difficult vocab words

里帰り L27

cute indie horror

廃村巡り L27

cute indie horror

milk inside a bag… L31

N1+ simply because not only are some of the kanji difficult, but the font itself makes it super hard to read, distinguish and even look up words you dont know

夜廻 L27

cute horror game

Note to self: add Cultist Simulator and Milk inside a bag of milk inside a bag of…

edit: there will be too many games if I add the games with levels here in the wiki so I want to create a proper wiki in another thread

edit2: cant 3 consecutive replies again

hi @meagstudies
weird question, would you mind turning this initial post into a wiki and I’ll create a table for all the games listed here?

I was planning on creating a new thread and it occurred to me that it’ll be kinda dumb since people posted it here anyways
if you feel like it’s unnecessary I’ll just create it in a new thread anyways

Using my own post as an example, I was thinking of doing something that looks like the following (was thinking to maybe even use icons or small logos instead of the words on “platforms”)

Games:

Since except game info links I pretty much finished at least listing everything so far I just created a new thread to be a wiki and if this one ends up being the wiki instead later on then all the better

I hope Natively will add video games soon, but until then,

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Rescue Team DX ~22. iirc this one had furigana. It also has spaces between words. The most difficult words were the names of items and pokemon moves, but it’s easy to ignore those. Possible with just n4 level but would be a slog, much smoother with some n3 knowledge. Took me 40 hours for main game, and another 20 hours for post game.

Rune Factory 3 ~25. Includes some characters with Kansai dialect. A lot of optional events if you want more reading. Characters repeat vocab and sayings a lot. Some lines are voiced.

どうぶつの森 ~23/24. A lot of colloquial language. Sometimes I couldn’t understand cranky villagers at all. It’s fun for learning vocabulary, when you acquire an item you can read what it is, take a guess, and then check by displaying it.

I also played Stardew Valley for a little bit but turns out it’s machine translated, so I don’t think it’s worth including here.

Wait, really?

I kinda want to try it out just because of this lmao
the chinese to english google translated signs all over again

If you want to try it out to see a mess you might be disappointed. It’s one of the most-mentioned games for learning Japanese that I’ve seen, both as answers to “what games should I start out with” and in “I play those games in Japanese and love them” threads. People seem to love it; this is the first time I’ve seen anything bad mentioned about its Japanese translation.

Same here; I’ve seen a few posts about bad translations here and there, but nothing on the level of MTL. I don’t suppose anyone has any sources following up on the MTL part?

It looks like the developers worked with Playism, a reputable Japanese publisher, for the localization. (Stardew Valley - Stardew Valley Localization Feedback, Stardew Valley – Coming Soon! | News | PLAYISM Official Website) While I don’t know anything about their translation staff and contracting, I can’t imagine they would use machine translation for a project like this.
