English summary

From MAL (originally web novel description):

I, Maehara Maki, someone who couldn’t make any acquaintances or friends in high school, finally had someone to hang out with outside of school. A girl. Her name was Asanagi-san. The boys in my class called her “the class’ second cutest girl” behind her back. On Fridays, she would refuse her best friend, Amami, “the cutest girl in class” invitation just to hang out in my house with me. Together, we played games, watched some movies, read some manga while eating junk foods like pizza and hamburgers, and chugging cola without a care in the world. To others, we may seem sloppy, but it was a precious, secret time together for Asanagi-san and myself.

Natively translation (DeepL) adds:

It’s a fun time with her, who also shares my taste in movies, games, and manga. I can’t imagine her innocent and pampered face from her usual firm and solid character. She says, "Hurry up and sit next to me, we’re going to read manga together. This is my bed. … It’s my bed for now. Come on, come here. Aren’t you too close, Ms. Asanagi? A love comedy between a loner boy and the second heroine, a life-size “friend”!

Discussion ground rules

  • Spoilers behind spoiler or details tags
  • Always mention where you are in the book when discussing, ideally by chapter so people reading different versions have a clear point of reference.
  • Feel free to read ahead if it’s exciting! But please refrain from spoiling ahead of the appropriate week
  • If you have a question about grammar, vocab, cultural things, etc - ask! That can be part of the discussion too and I’m sure some folks would be happy to help.

I’d be okay with…
  • 10 weeks (35 pgs/week)
  • 12 weeks (30 pgs/week)
  • 14 weeks (25 pgs/week)
  • 17 weeks (20 pgs/week)
  • 23 weeks (15 pgs/week)

Select all options you think would be alright for the club. You can select as many as you want. Selecting slower options even if you are able to read quickly can open up the club for slower participants.

I think the fastest speed I could read at would be…
  • 35 pgs/week (10 weeks)
  • 30 pgs/week (12 weeks)
  • 25 pgs/week (14 weeks)
  • 20 pgs/week (17 weeks)
  • 15 pgs/week (23 weeks)

Can you tell the OP was cobbled together from like 3 different threads?

Ok so based on the polls it looks like June 8 start & ~20 pgs per week. I’ll make up a schedule sometime in the next few days.

If people’s availability changes & you’re able to start June 1 (or earlier?) lmk

I can start whenever. I will always have too many books I’m reading and too many clubs I’m a part of

Schedule & ending lines table are up. Came out to 19 weeks, since some weeks are less than 20 pgs. The last 2 weeks are slightly more (but still less than 30), b/c those were the only natural breakpoints I saw. Anyway, looking forward to it, when we get there

Alright we’ve officially started! Week 1 = the prologue!

Looking forward to reading/discussing with everyone

Well this is my 3rd time around, and I’m enjoying so far. Lookups are mostly 2-3 per Kindle pg (size 2 font), except for one pg where it got up to 9. Most of them are double-checking readings, but a few things I didn’t remember the meaning of popped up too. It’s fun being back at the beginning

第一話の感想と反応

Love the contrast between spring (season) and spring (school term)

The single mother household is pretty interesting. I love that Maki is the one helping out with the chores in the morning, helping his mother get up, etc. Also i love their banter

In case anyone else is wondering: 出前 is getting food delivered, and 宅配 (not mentioned here) is a broader term for getting food or packages delivered

His intro and movies thing seems perfectly fine… I guess high schoolers are judgy

Teacher seems a bit silly and clumsy

Yuu & Umi intros - poor 捨て犬 :joy: I was thankfully able to understand the way Yuu explains her name this time

I wonder how he becomes friends with Umi??

I have so many book clubs right now that I think I’m going to skip the first few weeks and catch up with you all in a month or so. See you all in a few weeks.

Not much to say about just the prologue. Just that I initially thought he was waking up his little sister instead of his mom. Just from how these kinds of stories usually have a little sister.

I though it really strange/interesting how the title cover and the first illustration are basically the same illustration done twice. I imagine they couldn’t decide which one would better fit the cover. I just looked at volume two, and there they used the exact same illustration as on the cover, instead of redoing it slightly different.

I also tried to guess which one of the two girls is the titular character. But it’s obviously the one looking straight at the viewer.

She also makes this scissor gesture with her hand. I thought this meant “2” as in her affirming “I’m the second cutest” (or more likely just a reference to the title). According to Finger-counting across cultures – Embracing multiple languages and cultures across the lifespan that’s not how Japanese count, though. (Incidentally, the internet wanted to make me believe people from my country are strange for starting counting with their thumb when really that seems to be quite common. You could almost say the American way is weird).

It’s only book 1 that has the odd/cool illustration difference like that… the other 6.5 are normal. Interestingly the illustrator for book 1 is 長部トム , while the others are all 日向あずり. I think the artist may have left the field or something, cuz that’s the last image on their pixiv

I just noticed something interesting, glancing back and forth between the photos, by I won’t share just yet

I assumed it was the Victory sign, when I saw the picture. The artist has it tagged as #ピースサイン - which afaik is the same thing

Completely missed the start last week (well, it doesn’t help that I’m really not into this type of stories, but since I got the book while it was on sale, might as well give it a try).

Prologue

Well, I don’t get what is supposedly wrong with his self introduction. My first thought was that him “failing” was just in his head (and I still believe it was) but then it’s strange that he didn’t exchange some words with people around him. Like, you have to either be some kind of outcast or try really hard to be isolated in high school. He even mention having some longing for being part of a club or something. Have you considered joining one? That’s how it’s supposed to work

On the topic of the self-intro, the one thing I noticed about the cover illustration (skipped the other ones since they tend to have spoilers in LNs) is that brunette girl (朝凪) had a shark strap on her school bag, so I assume that’s one thing they can bond over.

First part of chapter 1

Well, I’m glad the main character agrees that “2nd cutest” is a horrible nickname. I do understand his feeling that it’s not his place to get angry about it… but still, he could mention to the guys around that it’s “a bit weird” at least. There’s a guy literally asking him what’s up at that instant.
(Also, that literally proves that he isn’t as isolated as he says he is. “We are not friends”, bro, friendship goes both ways, you have to do something about it if you want it to happen. It seems to me like it’s on you.)

About the food stuff, I feel like pizza every week-end is fine-ish. Not the healthiest, but whatever. Overall, he is doing a really bad job at selling me the “I wish I had a friend” part. (Also, super minor, but why did he wait for his pizza to be ready before going to the rental shop? Especially since people know him)

もう、さっきから隣にいた

I’m glad that is addressed. I can’t see how this situation would happen without at least one of them (the second person to get there) noticing the other.

そ。私、用事、君に。OK?

… What? Absolutely not. That’s really weird. Why is she there, then? She followed him?
Well, I guess it’s not going to be addressed. And that kinda change my opinion about the previous point. (Also, did she attempt to grab the same movie as him on purpose, then?)

Still kinda unclear as to what is the issue with her hobbies. Is it a cultural thing I’m not aware of?

@naphtalene

You know, I kinda glossed over it since being a bit of a loser is common for protagonists. But it really doesn’t make much sense. I don’t remember any reason why he shouldn’t have friends, like moving a lot or some kind of traumatic past event or self limiting belief. Also, he seems to do pretty well with 朝凪. Maybe he was just waiting for someone to say “let’s be friends” out of the blue and didn’t know of any other ways to make friends.

What do you mean? Did you read the movie titles? I think those would be considered a niche interest pretty much anywhere.

@naphtalene

It took me a second to figure out why, I just knew it looked wrong. :stuck_out_tongue:

Yeah, I guess that might be it.

No, the fact that she said she likes “outdoor” stuff during the actual self-introduction, but her real card says that she likes video games and b-level horror movies and the like. Like, okay? Why hide it?

Those are very typical, by the way. (Some are even so close to actual titles that I assume they are all inspired by actual movies/parodies)

Edit: actually, I can even provide the titles I know (and look up the rest)
サイボーグナノマシンサメ: probably Roboshark?
殺人鬼VS人喰いザメin無人島: not sure, but the VS reminds me of something. Google gave me “凶暴ピラニアVS人喰いザメVS狂気ムカデ人間”. I don’t think that’s it, though. Edit 2: ah remembered it. Mega Shark vs. xxx is a series of bad horror movies.
ピラニアザメ: Piranha Sharks
カンフーザメ: not sure, but the idea of fighting sharks makes me think of “shark side of the moon”

There is a YouTube(?) series called Kung Fu Shark as parody of Kung Fu Panda, maybe there is some connection.

Considering it should be a horror movie, that doesn’t seem connected

Not everyone has the courage or self-confidence for that. Classmates are intimidating™️

Arguable weirdness aside, this is actually one of my favorite lines in the book, for its cheekiness :joy:

Anyway high schoolers are weird like that sometimes (not OK’ing it, but it seemed within “normal weirdness” for high schoolers)

I think it’s fine that a clear reason isn’t given at this point. Like we know from the prologue it’s an established fact, and that he and his mom are concerned about it. I’m not sure what the additional backstory with a specific explanation/elaboration would really contribute right now.

I second this. Even if the movie titles(?) are typical - they’re clearly not the sorta movies that are gonna give you positive social status in high school. They’re also not stereotypically a girl thing afaik. So I can see why the “2nd cutest” girl who’s nearly the class idol might not wanna have that be everyone’s first impression of her.

Thx for the titles

An aside about サメ - one of my favorite music groups is FictionJunction (and Kalafina). Their former lead singer, Wakana, is adorably obsessed with サメ

week 2

I dunno. If the book established that the moon is made of cheese without further explanation, I would be confused too. Like, how does it even work? (For both the moon cheese and the randomly not having friends)

Your and @bbo’s reactions are really confusing me. Technically the point is moot, since neither the card nor the main character (during self introduction) mentioned any title, AND she literally mentioned to people what kind of movie she was going to watch while in class (might be a different type, but it still means she is into movies), so then again why hide it in the first place. BUT even if she did in fact mention those titles, I feel like it would be considered quirky and cute. It’s certainly waaaay less weird than stalking.

I’m starting to feel like this book will just be one question mark after another for me.
