At least I’m not 40… yet.
At least I’m not 40… yet.
kids these days… oh wait… I’m not helping my case, am I?
It’s from 1997, so those kids are 35+ now
I started cross-referencing with the web novel’s TOC so I could find the occasional time that the bonus chapter was actually originally in the web novel. Every once in a while, the web novel included a 閑話 chapter from another character’s perspective, but in the LN those would get replaced with a マイン chapter in the main sequence and then be relegated to a bonus “alternate perspective” chapter at the end.
But it’s even worse than you think. Even the prologues and epilogues are primarily 書き下ろし for the LN and they get increasingly more pointless as the series progresses.
I still give the series a 5/5 overall. But it would have been much better if it didn’t have this filler.
That’s something I guess… If I ever read the other books, I’ll make a list as I go and/or mention in reviews, so other ppl know what they can skip
Is this because マイン is always the narrator?
Ngl that makes me a lot less inclined to read the remaining novels, unless I can just skip all of those, or find a clear indicator of which few are relevant.
Outside of prologue, epilogue, and bonus chapters, yeah. But I don’t really get why they couldn’t keep the 閑話 chapters from the web novel in their original places.
This would also require cross-referencing, probably more so since they are more likely to be relevant than the bonus chapters. For what it’s worth, I only stopped enjoying the prologues and epilogues in arc 4 where the series became more like one continuous story with a less definitive “end” to a each book. Granted, that is still over half the series.
Either way, I totally get where you’re coming from. This was probably my biggest problem with the series even though I still love it and feel it was worth reading it.
You could read the web novel instead.
But the main text got a lot of editing as well. I personally liked the published version better overall (I read both), but most bonus stories were boring indeed. That’s why I never bought the short stories books
This was my assumption, and I’m not very inclined to read web novels (plus I can’t log them here) - so I’ll pass. Thanks for the suggestion tho.
Noted, tho like @shitsurei I often find them really disruptive (as evidenced by the マリみて volume 28 I still haven’t finished )
Since we’ve been speaking of our annoyances with 本好き, I will say that for サイレント・ウィッチ 沈黙の魔女の隠しごと | L31 I’ve really enjoyed the contrast in POV compared to 本好き since it shows the perspectives of several characters. While マイン is a great character (and her internal quips are some of the best parts of the series), having just one POV 95% of the time does get old after a while. I really hope Silent Witch continues with this since it spices things up.
Also, I haven’t started 転生王女と天才令嬢の魔法革命 | L32 yet, but I hope it has at least two POVs, one for each of the female leads. The anime at least made me feel like they were co-leads, so it would be nice to see the inner thoughts of both of them.
Something to look forward to when I eventually read it! Actually it has an audiobook, right? If so, eventually will probably be “this month”
It does, and multiple other characters. In book 1 it’s Anis & Yufi, but also Anis’ father (the king) and Ilya (the maid). Yufi is so much more interesting in the books, imo - and they absolutely feel like co-leads there as well
By the way, the first volume is one of the books I got during my last buying rush.
Well, I’m about 2/3 through the book and it was a bit of a rollercoaster.
First of all, the main character mentions being asexual. Not in the typical isekai “I never experienced love in my past life, so I don’t really know what it means”, but in a much more direct “I used to feel sexual attraction in my past life, but I’m not getting it this time, regardless of gender”. While it does prevent an actual relationship with the other hot dude, it’s not like I really had any hope in a 男性向け light novel. I mean… maybe a little
But then, the main character starts getting reaaaally close to a different character and it felt kinda disappointing that we just get (potentially) a het relationship again. (And why is the main character getting flustered? What happened to being asexual from like 5 minutes ago?)
But then, it turns out that I really like their interactions. At the very least, they are much better than the stuff I typically see in isekai LN. So, it’s fine, I guess.
Now, that’s like a few pages of content, basically a drop in the overall story, but the overall story is kinda standard isekai stuff. It’s fine, though, and the writing is getting generally better.
I started in on reading なぜ働いていると本が読めなくなるのか | L35 because where’s the fun in buying lots of books and then forcing yourself to read them only one at a time? So far it’s been interesting and a fairly straightforward read.
Also, I was just browsing in the Tsutaya in Hirosaki, and I was amused to note that im their manga section, as well as the shelves labelled 少女, 青年, etc, they had practically an entire wall of shelving specifically for 異世界 manga…
Oh my
Derp. Fixed
I finally became un-lazy long enough to write a review for ニッターズハイ! but I wanted to add in a tag for furigana. If something has furigana other than handwritten exclamations/side remarks/etc, is that generally considered full furigana?
I’d consider it as such. Idk about others, or if there’s more specific tags
I would agree. Furigana on handwritten notes is rare enough to be notable. I’d also consider it full furigana if all of the printed text had furigana.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen that. Tiny handwritten furigana sounds cute and terrible and the same time.
