What are you watching today?

Yeah I noticed this too. Worst case I’ll generate the subtitles myself which is better than nothing. But I’ll wait a few days in case jp subs are added.
I skimmed through the ep and I liked what I saw so I’m looking forward to it.

Interestingly until this I saw nothing but praise for it. Artwork in manga is very important for me and can carry series, to a point. I don’t necessarily mind aimlessness…but it depends. Not sure when I’ll pick it up, or if I’ll start the anime first after all.

I watched the first episode of 黄泉のツガイ. I enjoyed it, I hadn’t read the synopsis so the twist early in the episode felt pretty shocking, even though it’s written on the series page everywhere. It’s just setup so far but I’m interested and will keep watching.

How would you go about doing that?

I use whisper on a local download of the episode, specifically I use this

the command I use
auto_subtitle (path to video) --model medium --subtitle_format srt --language ja --word_timestamps --srt_only --output_dir (path to output dir)

It’s about 95% accurate, but it also takes like half an hour for an episode to process. It’s not ideal, so I only use it when there are no other options.

Most recently I used it for a play, which had no jp subs and no hopes for getting one. And it was pretty much completely accurate except no matter what I did, it would NOT sub the first 5 minutes (amusingly the subtitles only start the moment one of the actual mcs show up to talk…)
Also very rarely (exclusively in marimite so far) I had issues were subtitles briefly go crazy like I posted here マリア様がみてる & お釈迦様もみてる Home Thread - #89 by earwen

This stuff is rare enough that it’s not a big bother, at least.

Meant to post this the other day… I’ll follow up with seasonals next post, after I’ve watched a few more

I finally picked this up! 5 episodes in and I’m really enjoying it. The cast all have diverse, loud personalities, and both the heeros and antagonists are well-developed, and seemingly a larger plot that’s slowly developing. The only thing I’m not fond of is Ririna, the female lead, is really shallowly written, on top of the usual unbelievably naive shoujo thing. Otherwise I’m following things relatively well, but would certainly benefit from subs.

Somehow I’m not the first person on here to have watched this ball of weirdness. High school boys become the wives of these aliens/creatures. The episodes are like 3 min each, and it works well enough. I did kinda like the boys = wives thing though.

Watched the first episode, after reading @shitsurei 's recent glowing comments. I’ll say this is definitely the more enjoyable format for me, but I’m not sure I’m interested enough to go through this story a second time, particularly since I started Gundam Wing, and the current season is starting already

Did another ep of シャンピニオンの魔女 S1 | L28 and was reminded that I really should find subs, cuz I’m missing a bunch of the details.

I’ve had a few current season ones I dropped early & thought of picking up again… but in the end, I just haven’t felt motivated enough to do so.

Yeah! Or to binge something completely unrelated lol

I do not envy people who have to translate anime titles… sometimes it’s really not straightforward, so understandable. I usually end up learning the titles in both languages. It helps that I’m usually watching from JP streaming sites (Amazon Prime & Netflix)

Seasonals thoughts:

2 eps - This is every bit as good as I was hoping. The concept is fun, but it’s a very trauma-heavy show, and the characters are all enjoyable. I watched ep 1 without subs, before discovering Netflix JP has subs. It’s definitely a show I need them for.

This was a nice surprise! I’ve been interested since I heard of the manga, with that “kinda looks like Inuyasha” vibe… But they could not be more different. Instead of the usual “bickering couple romance/romantic comedy with slapstick humor” I associate with Takahashi’s work, it has a pretty serious tone and the two leads and the feudal + youkai world/time slip all seem pretty interesting. Also despite the Inuyasha resemblance, Mao doesn’t appear to be a youkai, tho does have special abilities… And he’s not the only one!

Only downside was it’s currently on Hulu - which has a lot of commercials (3x 1.5 minutes) - and won’t be out on other platforms till next week. I’m less bothered by JP ads, but the American ones on Hulu are longer and more annoying.

First episode was decently interesting. You can kinda tell it’s from the FMA author a little (from the style of bickering), but otherwise they don’t seem to have anything in common. I really wanna know what’s up with the planes & helicopters. Looking forward to episode 2

Decent start - basically setup for how Akane became interested in rakugo, and for her determination. Definitely would like subs, so hopefully Netflix will add them soon. Btw I had that problem with Frieren too at the beginning of last season, and they added them after a bit. Probly something else as well but idrc

Tried this on a whim. Semi-gloomy and loner female lead, who a lot of classmates are afraid of bc of he cold demeanor (which is a combo of resting-ice queen face and trauma from bullying). The male lead(s) seem interesting enough. One thing that intrigued me is that not everybody was afraid of the girl, just like 75% of the characters - I thought that was a nice touch. I also like that she has a friend, and it’s not just the male lead completely saving her, unlike 君に届け S1 | L22 . There’s also a more realistic than usual ナンパ scene, and I liked the way it was played. I think the anime is a romance, but I’m not sure who the intended partner is, and it seems like it will be as much about friendship. So that’s a good sign to me.

Two eps have been a bit disappointing so far. It’s cute, but a bit dull and over exaggerated. I’ll keep watching for now, but I’m considering dropping.

Dropped - very disappointing - mismatched expectations on my part. I was on the fence, but I checked it out bc it seemed like it might have a bit of an kinda old school vibe… But like the whole twist (mostly stated in the synopsis) is “my goal is to make 100 friends!! Oh wait I’m in an ice age now?!”… But just like I was hoping for something more serious in theme and tone.

A friend of mine watched it, had a big wtf and made me watch it too. I don’t remember that much except I also was kinda wtf, but enjoyed it a lot more than I would have expected based on the premise

I watched the first two episodes of とんがり帽子のアトリエ S1 | L30?? and they were quite good! Very happy with the art direction and animation quality so far!

I started あかね噺 S1 | L30??, but it looks like new episodes are consistently being released without Japanese subs, so I guess I’ll have to watch one week behind. (Assuming they consistently add the Japanese subs a week later…) The first episode was enjoyable enough, but it was giving off shounen vibes a bit too much for my liking.

Interesting so far. Starts off with some strong subtext. Also one of the characters might be from 青い花?! She’d have been a friend of Akira’s… Hopefully someone with a better memory can confirm. I found some of the dialogue hard to get without subs, but maybe I was just out of it…

College students + drinking = yuri. (The yuri is already there, but the drinking brings it out)… It’s not exactly intellectually stimulating, but I’ll give ep 2 a try

Best/most original use of a trap character I’ve ever seen! Also surprise yuri! (side character, only tangentially relevant). Idk so far it’s interesting and seems like it has potential

I’m not sure how I feel about it just yet. They cut out the first scene of Maki bantering with his mom, and I’m pretty disappointed about that. One of my favorite things about this series is the family interactions, and I feel like that scene adds some good depth - about Maki’s personality, the dad being out of the picture, his relationship with his mom, etc. That said, in the second scene with his mom (where he’s asking for money to go on a date hang out with his friend) she’s portrayed pretty well, and seeing her roast him a bit was fun.

Anyway besides that it seems solid enough, tho I’m worried it’s gonna be a bit rushed. I think they’ve captured the vibe pretty well. That said Yuu’s voice actor sounds really different than how I imagine her in my head, but that’s not really a huge deal.

Finished ep 9 (59)… I’m kinda whatever about it rn… Which given how many things I’m watching, I should probably drop it

I’ll probably also watch a week behind then

A bunch of more anime my partner agreed to watch with me (Kamiina bottan, witch hat atelier). So those will be watched with english subs at some point.

I tried Marriage toxin, which I really enjoyed. Also tried Akane Banashi. I liked the first episode, but found myself wishing we stuck to younger Akane instead of highschool (I haven’t actually seen much of older Akane, I guess but I was dissapointed to see her grow up so quick lol)

It’s a shounen jump title after all, my understanding is that it’s a pretty generic sports shounen, besides the subject matter and the mc being a girl.

Waiting for subs for 淡島百景 and 左ききのエレン. If they don’t end up getting jp subs, I’ll probably still try them out eventually but won’t follow seasonally.

Which character? I don’t see any overlap in the character list on AniList. But it’s certainly possible since the mangaka is the same. (Also, I’m surprised this mangaka is getting an adaption from a decade old manga at this point.)

Yeah, I knew it was in Jump which is partly why I never read the manga. Hopefully it can still be good.

I had the same thought, but what can you do. High school setting is always going to be more popular.

Ryouko Ueda (Awajima Hyakkei) - MyAnimeList.net - she’s listed there in both manga, and I’ve seen the association on another site too. She’s apparently from Akira’s second year, so that might be past what 青い花 anime adapted? Idrc, and clearly need to rewatch

I was also surprised by that. I like seeing older things get adapted though. It’s like “oh hey, here’s this nice thing everybunny missed!”. 花ざかりの君たちへ S1 | L22 was 30 yrs old (or 22 if you count from finish) as well. I just hope this does better than 青い花 did commercially. I honestly haven’t heard the best about the manga (it’s not one of her stronger works, harder to follow than usual, etc).

Well that’s saying something… as much as I like her manga (especially 放浪息子), they are generally hard to follow.

Been watching the new series of 本好きの下剋上

They’re going at like a million miles an hour these first two episodes at least. Episode 1 it’s like “Well ok, they’re trying to recap the old series since it’s been a few years while also introducing the new players”, but surprised episode 2 still has that pace (especially when the LN’s don’t), but they also seem to be trying to introduce stuff that S1-3 cut out retroactively too. They clearly want to get to something but since I haven’t read that much further into the source material, I’m not sure what.

They want to get to arc 4. :joy:

These are probably my seasonals, unless I add something else:

ガンバレ!中村くん!! S1 | L22 Probably the only one I haven’t already read in manga form. :joy: I like the OP and it’s easy enough to follow. It cleared the extremely low bar of the main character actually saying he’s gay.

黄泉のツガイ S1 I read the first five or so volumes of this one in English. I don’t like it quite as much as FMA, but most things aren’t FMA. It’s really fun seeing it animated though.

あかね噺 S1 | L30?? I read this one up until I stopped reading manga in English last year…. I’m looking forward to seeing what they do with the art style for the rakugo stories.

とんがり帽子のアトリエ S1 So far the art looks really nice, but I can’t help noticing that the OP is mostly based on illustrations from the manga… Not sure how many volumes they’re going to fit into season, so even though I’ve fallen behind on this one, I’m pretty sure I’ve read everything that’s going to be in this season

Also watching 孤独のグルメ S1 which isn’t really seasonal, but they are releasing an episode a week on youtube.

I checked the pace based on the first two episodes and I think it’ll likely cover four volumes.

If I’ve got the correct Akane Banashi series, it’s available directly on YouTube:

I’ve watched ep. 1 and ep. 2 so far. No streaming subscription needed.

When I turn on closed captioning there I am seeing both English and Japanese subs. I’m unsure of whether I may be seeing machine-generated subs or human-generated ones, or whether there may be a way to suppress the English subs, but you may want to take a look.

Could I be mistaken about the English?

No, the English is there too.

The Japanese subs say auto generated / 自動生成. English didn’t show as an option for me, I assume bc my phone & region are set to Japanese/Japan. Fwiw you can tell those are auto-generates, bc no human generated subs will present you with 3 super long lines of text like that. I’ve used YouTube subs one before on a fantasy series. I’d put them in “better than nothing, but still gonna have some errors, depending on various things”

Cool to know it’s on YouTube though (appears to be geo-locked for North + Latin America). Akane-banashi · Jimaku has subs for ep 2 already that were TV broadcast captured, in case that’s useful for anyone

Subs are up for Akane banashi ep 2 on Netflix now btw. I checked it out and quote enjoyed it. Looking forward to more… Oddly it seemed like the language in this ep should have been mostly fine for me without subs… So I wonder is my audio-only recognition just that far behind? Or was it simply an easier episode?

Either way, I’ll keep watching
