What are you watching today?

I’ve watched it, though I wouldn’t call it “easier”. I enjoyed some of the manga too (before watching the anime), but the anime is more fun in this case.

Somehow I missed that this started, so I’m catching up.

Something I watched Season 1 a few episodes to kill time, and ended up enjoying.

Seasonals:
Enjoying Ikoku Nikki and ShiboYuugi still. My friend wanted to watch Omae Gotoki together, so I am not watching it in japanese anymore. A bit early, but I took a look at the spring season and there are around 10 series I want to watch, and a bunch more I am curious about. I wonder if that will smash my “become a seasonal anime watcher” dreams

Other:
I tried Jujutsu Kaisen! That was humbling, the pace is way too fast for me to keep up. Even for sentences I know everything in, my understanding lags behind. I’ll probably get back to it in a few months…

My own seasonal watching has essentially been on pause since January. ;_; Hoping to get back to them at some point; ideally before the spring season starts, but we’ll see.

No seasonals for me this season. The only one I would watch weekly is Medalist season 2, but for some reason Netflix hasn’t gotten the second season, so it’ll be simpler to just watch after it’s done airing.

I don’t usually watch week to week anyway. A show has to really interest me (and it has to be on Netflix) for me to bother, but there’s really nothing this season that has grabbed my attention.

That said, I really hope Netflix gets とんがり帽子のアトリエ next season, because I will absolutely watch that week to week.

It feels like this season is extra weak. I didn’t even feel like testing the waters of some series like sometimes I do.

The only thing I’ve kept up watching this season is 花ざかりの君たちへ S1 | L24, mostly for nostalgia reasons (it was maybe the first manga series that I finished in Japanese?)

I started a few others and dropped them all by episode 5.

Don’t feel bad, I barely understood jjk in English…. :joy:

Caught up with most of my seasonals finally, while I’m sick with a cold

葬送のフリーレン S2 4-5 - continues to be enjoyable, especially if you’re a fan of Fern & Stark

違国日記 S1 | L25 6-7 - is still my standout of the season. Very original content and storytelling. Continue to find Makio very relatable, and was surprised how she just put together that Emily is gay, and obviously has a - seemingly unrequited - crush on Asa that she feels like she can’t confess (well idk if she figured out all of the second part). Watching Makio meet Emily’s mom was interesting. Watching her navigate her 友達以上恋人未満 relationship with the her guy friend is really enjoyable. I really love how the stuff with Emily is just casually included. And having recently moved from a long time 親友 to 恋人 relationship myself, some of their stuff is very relatable (though different). It’s nice to see that sort of adult relationship portrayed. In general I think I’d like to find more anime where adult characters and relationships are prominent to the story.

花ざかりの君たちへ S1 | L24 6-7 continues to be my comfort show. I really love the main duo/trio. I thought it was cool that they finally showed how Mizuki conceals her chest, and like the fact that her body is gradually changing. Tho I’m sure it won’t go in too deep there. The summer love triangle stuff is a bit annoying, but like whatever, you know where it’s gonna land. I’m just wondering whether this dude is actually a creep, or the show is just creating a dramatic sense of danger.

多聞くん今どっち!? S1 | L26 5-7 - has just been disappointing, annoying, and uncomfortable the last 2-3 episodes. I’ve been considering dropping it.

うるわしの宵の月 S1 | L24 5-6 continues to be ok. I think it’s a good portrayal of two teens clumsily navigating having romantic feelings for the first time, and taking things quite slowly. But also I think that’s part of why it’s not always the most interesting

Still have シャンピニオンの魔女 S1 | L30 to catch up with, and eventually Fate/strange Fake S1 | L30?? (which I’ve only watched ep 1 so far)

Shows are mostly the same, except: Dropped 多聞くん今どっち!? S1 | L26 and Fate/strange Fake S1 | L30?? . I just didn’t feel enthused about the former anymore, and the latter is definitely my least favorite Fate I’ve tried so far. Eventually I’ll get back to it though

うるわし、フリーレン、花君、異国日記 are all still going strong. I’m a few eps behind on シャンピニオンの魔女 S1 | L30 . It definitely lives up to its level - I have to really pay attention, and probly not watch in at 10:30pm  At halfway through, I wonder just what it’s building to exactly? Speaking of HanaKimi, I tried the drama movie once more, and やっぱり I can’t stand it at all. It feels really cheap/demeaning, and I’m so glad I discovered this series through the anime instead.

Picked カーネーション S1 | L27 back up - finished ep 78/151. Needed some more こてこてな関西弁 in my life rn, to pick up some pointers, and work on intonation

There’s also two drama series and they’re both terrible. Don’t waste your time :joy:

The only thing I watch this season is

But I have an extreme beef with the series, I expect something that has this opening to air/be available on Sunday Morning:

Nearly there on this season’s Frieren, and I watched a bunch of CITY the animation this week with my anime group.

I am incredibly curious what the manga volume was like to lead this episode with 9 picture-in-picture plotlines happening at once.

Just a few weeks left to the season…

花ざかりの君たちへ S1 | L23 - I left a review already. It’s not perfect, but I loved it & really hope it gets an S2. I definitely wanna read the manga at some point

うるわしの宵の月 S1 | L24 - to this show’s credit, I can really never quite tell where it’s going… It always seems like it’s maybe checking something off, but then is a bit ズレた. Just 2 eps left. Can’t say I’m intrigued enough to read the manga, but it’s been an enjoyable watch

違国日記 S1 | L26 - an especially unique show . Despite the younger lead being honestly a bit unremarkable (by her own admission), the storytelling and how everything adds up is unique and interesting. For me, the adult characters and the intergenerational awkwardness feel really realistic. And the way the younger character’s discussion is portrayed is really unique. I’m really gonna miss it when it’s done, and definitely wanna check out the manga

葬送のフリーレン S2 | L29 - continues being awesome. Watching the split party battles was quite interesting… Nice to see Stark grow a bit more, and get to . I was hoping Methode would join the party, but it makes sense as is. Similarly watching Fern have to gradually become more independent is cool.

Thoughts on how demons are treated & portrayed

I wondered if we were gonna get some further exploration of the demons, or challenge Frieren’s earlier characterization of them as being exclusively predatory above all else, the past few eps. We almost got something (with the kid-like demon), but we’re still stuck with this essentialist view of them. Irl I would find this kind of essentialism very unpleasant, and most anime I’ve seen tend to avoid it (if we’re talking about sentient, highly intelligent enemies rather than mobs or races like goblins, orcs, etc). At least most shows tend to try to make you empathize or sympathize with both sides - sometimes to a surprising degree. So this aspect of the series is unexpected to me, and I think it makes for an interesting “flaw”. As a complete contrast, see the easy the Dark Territory tribes & races are portrayed complexly in ソードアート・オンライン : Alicization - War of Underworld | L29

シャンピニオンの魔女 S1 | L28 - I keep procrastinating this (cuz fantasy). So I’ll randomly catch up with the remaining episodes when I’m up for it

Your post reminded me of several current-season series that I had started watching on CR, only to have them fall by the wayside.

I’m unsure of why I dropped them, so maybe they’re worth at least another look, just in case I may have missed something worth watching.

The interval between the end of the current season and the start of the next is probably an opportune time for doing that.

But your post also reminded me that I’ve mostly been referring to the CR shows by their (often-mangled) English titles rather than by their Japanese ones.

I’ll have to make an effort to change that over time.

I ended up finishing お前ごとき with my friend, with english subs. I don’t have much positive to say about it, so I won’t dwell.

Shibouyuugi and Ikoku Nikki are both good, though I am not as in love with them as others seem to be (not necessarily on here, but on general). I am a few eps behind on both, I should finish them up soon, before more seasonals come out.

This season is pretty stacked for me.

Started:
ガンバレ!中村くん!! → very good. I like the manga and it translated the style very well, though the pacing is slowed down a bit.

Will Check Out
黄泉のツガイ → I am not as big of a fma fans as others but I am curious about her next shounen. I am pretty hopeful of this one, but who knows.
あかね噺 → Idk if I’ll like it, and I feel like it will be on the harder side. So I would have to like it quite a bit to watch it despite that. But I am very curious about it at least.
左ききのエレン → seems interesting and I like stories about art, but idk much else about it
北斗の拳 → a new adaptation of a classic, might as well try?
淡島百景 → I don’t really like the manga of this creator, but I tend to like them better animated (her art style confuses me, everyone looks the same and her paneling is not intuitive to me)
とんがり帽子のアトリエ → I will definitely watch this…eventually. I think I’d rather read the manga first? We’ll see.
上伊那ぼたん → yuri that doesnt look like it was made on a 800 yen budget so I will be there
Marriagetoxin → been hearing about this one for years, it seems fun. as long as its well animated I think I will watch it.

Keeping an eye on
MAO → modern rumiko! I am not a huuge fan of hers, mostly just nostalgic, but I am a bit curious. However I keep thikning, I’d rather watch the modern ranma remake. sooo idk. This one is pretty low priority unless I hear a lot of good about it
Needy Girl Overdose → I got the game in a bundle, though I didn’t start it yet. I’m a bit curiuos how it will translate to an anime. I’m keeping an eye on it in the sense of I will follow fan reactions rather than watch it, if I watch it will probably be after the game.
日本三國 → the animation looks good, but idk how I feel about the premise.

Will watch…with en subs (with friends):
本好き4 → I watch all of this with a friend so this one as well, might not watch it right away, idk yet.
Liar Game → I love the manga so I will definitely watch this, a friend agreed to watch it with me so it will be with subs.

oh and for non-seasonals I started Frieren a while back. I enjoyed first handful of eps but I was told the vibe changes a lot so I’m a bit worried lol

For some reason, Netflix JP doesn’t have Japanese closed captions for this one. This is probably the first time I’ve seen that for a new anime on Netflix JP. Oddly it does have English subs…

The manga is long and ongoing. I’ve read 12 volumes, but I’m not planning to continue since the story has no clear direction and it’s hard enough that I can’t just read it without using brainpower. I really liked the earlier volumes though, so I’m going to check out the anime of course. (If you can read the manga mostly for the artwork it’s fantastic, but everything else is really inconsistent.)
