Spoilers should always be hidden using spoiler blur.
When discussing a specific section, please mention where you are in the book, ideally by chapter, so people reading different versions have a clear point of reference.
Feel free to read ahead if it’s exciting, but please refrain from spoiling ahead of the appropriate week.
If you have a question about grammar, vocab, cultural things, etc - ask! That’s a welcome part of the discussion too, and other readers will be happy to help.
Chapters are quite irregular, so I think voting should be on an approximate number of pages. Each chapter is divided in sub-chapters, so finding a good stopping point shouldn’t be too hard.
Since it’s still a while until the start on the 12th of October, I’ll leave the pacing poll open until the 2026-10-07T13:00:00Z, in case someone else wants to join (and break the tie )
If it remains a tie, you can just ignore my vote. I did mark that I would be reading at my own pace, so I kinda feel like my vote should be weighted less.
I’m going to join in. This book is the very first book I’ve tried to read in Japanese and I’d like to really feel the difference in ability between then and now.
And by “I read it”, I mean “I looked up all the words in the order they appeared in from start to finish, and translated 80% of the sentences through a tool”
I bought the whole series a while back so might try to read it physically.
I have read the English ones until a certain volume, then decided to read it in Japanese, and did basically the same until mid-book, which I grew frustrated at my reading speed.
It will be a nice exercise to see my speed change and tolerance.
The pacing poll is now closed, I’ll be splitting the book shortly trying to find the most natural stopping points near the selected 30 average page speed.
Splitting the later part of the book near the 30 page mark in a clean part was more challenging than initially though.
Also the audiobook stops were a bit hard, but since I know the story, I could eventually find them based on what was going on, otherwise it would have been nearly impossible without listening to the whole thing
For those doing audiobook, note that there’s the 上 and 下
