百合 manga/novel discussion

Ahh I always forget that’s YH - ironic, since when I read it, I was grumpy about the lack of romance. I’ve been thinking of getting the physicals. Are they regular B6 size, or the slightly larger size?

女友だち I found kinda dry when I tried it, but I wonder if I’d do better with it now that I can read more comfortably

I’ve been kinda curious to reread ロンリーガール to see how I feel about it

Anyway, all of 3 titles - that’s impressive :stuck_out_tongue:

Looks like 5 1/8 x 7 1/8 inches. I just happened to have a tape measure handy.

I did say I don’t really care for YH. :joy:

女同士とかありえないでしょと言い張る女の子を、百日間で徹底的に落とす百合のお話 | L28 I found relatively easy. I read it through Kindle unlimited (non-Japan account). It was somewhat fun, but pretty trashy. And those girls don’t care about consent. I was not inclined to read the other books in the series or by the author.

https://learnnatively.com/search/jpn/books/?type=light_novel,novel&ntags=yuri&max=29&sort=rating other books are either by the same author, or one seems to have a similar plot with similar problems or they have reviews that are kind of meh.

I’ll try 〆切前には百合が捗る | L29 if it wins the nomination in the Yuri book club (I think they are voting this week).

Most of the yuri LNs haven’t been graded yet, and I’m only starting to explore this myself, but a few possibilities:

Some things from my wishlist:

Thanks for the replies, but all of that seems to be featuring schoolgirls. I kind of expected that since those stories are both common and more simple. I think I might try 女同士とかありえないでしょと言い張る女の子を、百日間で徹底的に落とす百合のお話 since I read it eventually changes to a college setting, and あなたに恋してもいいですか which is both very low level and features adults.

For 〆切前には百合が捗る , I will read it if it wins the voting, but I don’t really want to read age gap.

Thanks again for taking the time to share recs

It looks like you’re safe so far, based on the voting 笑.

As an aside, that anthology you mentioned sounds kinda interesting b/c of the essays. I’m usually fairly uncomfortable with yandere stuff (it depends), but haven’t really seen any “essays about XYZ genre” sorta stuff b4. If you made an informal book club thread, I’d be down to try the essays together.

I’m busy this month and won’t be at my normal setup but if more people are interested I can make one once I’m clear. A bunch of people did vote for it …

It occurred to me that me (and Luna as well from what I found when I tried searching posts) are using yuri Navi but there is no official introduction to it in the thread even though it’s really relevant and good!

So anyone looking for recommendions yuri Navi is great! Plus it look sput for sales too lol

They technically have a site yurinavi.com but I mainly look through their Twitter posts for reccs that look interesting

Mainly I look at it when ppl link it in the sale and promotion hunting thread (they even have a sale / free books page: 百合漫画 セール・無料本情報(6/12更新) | 百合ナビ)… their twitter is great for finding new series!

Fwiw I finished 〆切前には百合が捗る | L29 and really enjoyed it!! Definitely doesn’t have the issues that say 安達としまむら or 週に一 have. Overall would recommend to anyone who isn’t totally put off by the age gap

There’s a whole bunch of free Yuri merch on bookwalker right now if you look through the sale+0 yen filter

Would you consider it a spoiler if someone wrote about a series that it’s bait, or that many people consider it as bait?

I’m always on the fence about whether to mention stuff like that, and if so what’s the best way to do that. Even if it’s under a spoiler tag, that’s either: not effective (ppl won’t look), or gives it away anyway

I’m kinda conflicted. On one hand, reading a story and wondering where the relationship is going to go is part of the experience. Otoh I wanna save people unnecessary aggravation and disappointment.

If there’s a legitimate chance at a relationship and it happens to not work out, I think that’s potentially a good story and I wouldn’t want to know. For example 青のフラッグ is a high school coming of age story that involves some LGBT and some non-LGBT characters. Knowing who ends up with who would be akin to spoiling the ending.

On the other hand, if it’s just a side tease that was clearly never going to happen I think it’s fine to know ahead of time. Many Kirara series have one or two female characters that like or flirt with another female character. But 99% of the time there’s no possibility of actual relationship development. I don’t think it’s a spoiler to tell people it’s all bait and not to get their hopes up.

Maybe a better way of thinking about it (for me) is: If it’s a romance I don’t want to know since whether the relationship is realized or not is basically the point of the story. (And I may not call it bait in that case, depending on how it’s done.) But if it’s not a romance and the yuri (whether realized or not) isn’t the point, I may not care about knowing ahead of time that nothing comes from it.

Definitely curious to hear what others think though.

I think I’d agree.
I love shipping characters where it’s clear that the story is not going to put them together but they’re just so right for each other. I also don’t mind if people don’t end up together if the story has a character arc/theme/plot reason for dangling the possibility of a relationship during the narrative. But I cannot stand wink wink, nudge nudge fan (dis)service that goes nowhere.

I really like that perspective; too often I’ve picked up a book thinking that the characters in question would be great for each other, only to realize soon enough that the author has no such thoughts in their head and we’re coming in with different expectations.

Totally agree re: Kirara… I had to tell someone the other day that no, New Game is not yuri (much as I love it), despite the (eventually) canon couple, and other subtext

For anyone wondering, the series that sparked this post is 熱帯魚は雪に焦がれる1 | L24 , which seems to be infamously considered yuri bait by many (I don’t agree, but I get where they’re coming from).

I personally (usually) agree… but based on various reviews and comments around the internet, many people seem to very strongly feel otherwise

Where this gets tricky for me is “what is considered a romance”. For example is 夜のクラゲは泳げない S1 | L26 a romance? Or is it a coming of age story that has a very strong romance component between the two leads? Either way, knowing how that turns out would definitely have affected my watching experience. In this case I really wish I’d known, and would have felt a lot less gutted. Similar for IDOL×IDOL STORY! | L24 - the first volume definitely gave me the impression it’s a yuri story… but 3 volumes later, I’m not so sure (and have dropped it). In both those cases, it’s arguably not the point of the story, but it’s certainly a very prominent point

I think that’s usually the determining factor for me as well

What series would you consider examples of this?

I had a feeling that was what sparked this question. I haven’t read it myself, but have definitely heard that viewpoint.

I just meant it more as a heuristic, so it’s definitely very subjective.

So basically all the yuri bait in Kirara series or something else? I don’t mind (mostly) in that case, but it’s the first thing I thought of. Not sure if you’ve read any of their series to comment.

For me, it doesn’t even need to be proper romance. A story focusing on a character having confused feelings for someone of the same gender, but eventually realizing those are not romantic would work for me. In that sense

I’m just going by the spoilers in your review, but for me, that would count as Yuri (depending on how it is executed).

Probably all the Yuri bait in Kirara series for me? I have only read 1 or 2 volumes of the rabbit cafe one (can’t even remember the title ).
At the same time, that also depends. If the “baiting” goes to the point of having no straight explanation possible, I think it may be okay too, depending on the style of the book. I’m going to take a BL example instead, since I have a lot more reading experience with that, but in 穏やか貴族の休暇のすすめ。 | L32 the author said “it’s technically not BL, there’s nothing happening” but the guys in there keep being extremely (physically) close to each other (e.g., one guy putting his thumb in the mouth of another ; characters being millimeters away from kissing, only to be stopped by a third one acting clearly jealous; etc). At that level of “bait”, I mean, whatever, sure.
In that last case, though, I don’t think it’s a spoiler to mention that it’s just bait (the author mentioned it anyway). In fact, knowing it’s going to be just bait increases my enjoyment by tempering my expectations.

I generally would rather know. And there is a difference to me between “these characters don’t get together” and “these characters dont get together and end up in straight relationships after a whole series of teasing the opposite/ the previous relationship is dismissed as a phase of some sort”

Though I simply do not mind spoilers in general, so I have nothing to lose by looking at spoilers anyway.
