English summary

A handsome guy’s life depends on my grades? An unprecedented romantic comedy about school subjects!

I’m Madoka Hanamaru.
I’m really bad at studying, especially math, and I only got 7 points on the last test…
But I kept studying hard because I wanted to live up to my beloved mother’s expectations.
But then my mother died and my heart was completely empty.
There was no point in trying hard anymore. I didn’t care about studying at all.

“I don’t need these anymore!”

I threw my textbooks, which had become worn out after studying every day, into the trash.

And then, the next Monday…

“Do you know what you’ve done?”
–Somehow, the math, science, and social studies textbooks I thought I had thrown away have turned into four boys!?
And it seems that their lifespans are determined by my test scores!?
…Wait, that means.

Math-kun, you’ll die in a week! If you don’t study, you’ll be a murderer!? An unprecedented [Math, Science, and Social Studies] anthropomorphized romantic comedy! [From intermediate elementary school ★★]

Discussion Guidelines

Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  1. Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.

  2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).

  3. Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.

Instructions for Spoiler Tags

Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1, Pg. 1”]).

Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:

Example

This is an example of the “Hide Details” option.

The “Blur Spoiler” option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

Posting Advice

  • When asking for help, please mention the page number, and check before posting that your question hasn’t already been asked. As the threads get longer, it becomes more convenient to use the Search function, which is located in the upper right corner of the forum. It is the magnifying glass which is near your profile picture! The best way to search is usually to type part of the sentence you are confused about, and select “in this topic”. This will show you all posts within the current thread which has that string of text.

  • Be sure to join the conversation! It’s fun, and it’s what keeps these book clubs lively! There’s no such thing as a stupid question! We are all learning here, and if the question has crossed your mind, there’s a very good chance it has crossed somebody else’s also! Asking and answering questions is a great learning opportunity for everyone involved, so never hesitate to do so!

I’m sorry what :joy:
I just came here because I keep clicking on random book club threads, but if that’s an accurate description, maybe I should read this book…

I won’t follow the club, though, since this book seems fairly popular at my local library?? I’m second in line to get it (well, third, if we count the person having it right now). I will probably need to wait a couple of weeks to get it and then won’t be able to extend it since people will be waiting behind me (I assume).

Edit: Oh wait, that actually matches the potential start of this club… I guess I’ll be able to write my comments on the first-ish week.

I just finished the audiobook and it’s both as wild as you imagine and just as grounded as you’d expect :joy:

I always want this option for clubs I lurk in thanks

Time to decide on a pace

Chapter lengths are wildly inconsistent lol:
Chapter 1: 5 pages
Chapter 2: 20 pages
Chapter 3: 7 pages
Chapter 4: 11 pages
Chapter 5: 14 pages
Chapter 6: 14 pages
Chapter 7: 7 pages
Chapter 8: 21 pages
Chapter 9: 19 pages
Chapter 10: 18 pages
Chapter 11: 11 pages
Chapter 12: 6 pages
Chapter 13: 20 pages
Chapter 14: 11 pages
Chapter 15: 14 pages
Chapter 16: 19 pages

What pace would you like to read at? Select all that apply:

  • 10 pages (~22 weeks)
  • 15 pages (~15 weeks)
  • 20 pages (~11 weeks)
  • 25 pages (~9 weeks)
  • 30 pages (~7 weeks)

How comfortable are you with stopping in the middle of a chapter? Would you rather stick to the pace, or read a few pages more to the end of a chapter:

  • Stick to the pace
  • Finish a chapter

I didn’t know you could share decks you make…

In my experience it does not do well with furigana. I typically convert the epub to htmlz in calibre, pull the html out of the archive and run a js script that I grabbed from the internet to remove the ruby text. THEN jpdb plays nice.

Yeah when I copied the text straight from the book it was giving things like 数すう学がく which would not out work in jpdb. Luckily ttsu can turn off all furigana so I copied it from there.

Oh I didn’t think to get it from ttsu… maybe I’ll try that next time and see if that’s less annoying than my method.

Does the jpdb deck link not work for anyone else?

It’s not popping up for me either, and searching on the site itself doesn’t bring back a deck.

You can’t share a jpdb deck with a link to it, as they all use generic id numbers tied to your account.

Any decisions on when we start? I presume 15 March?

Dang it, I didn’t know decks were unsharable  I’d link the google doc that has the entire text but I’m pretty sure that’s illegal

@IntrepidFox Yes we will start on March 15th and read 15 pages per week. I’ll start working on the schedule tomorrow.

I noticed that there’s a handy section break on page 20, so we could read from page 5 to page 20 for the first week and it’ll be a perfect 15 pages!

Are you talking about the one right after the math equations? That one’s so close to the end of the chapter I figured it would be better to just finish the chapter.

Physical table of contents! We’re mostly doing chapter breaks so it should be easy, then week 1’s break was on page 19.

Didn’t realize you’d already worked out the whole schedule. Carry on!
