read as many first volumes as possible (to decide, if series is worth continuing)
only participate in bookclubs where I own the book ( Try again. Fail again. Fail better.)
complete my Bingo card
stretch goal 1: finish (on average) at least 1 book per week
stretch goal 2: read daily
And I think I failed every single one of these goals. I am very good at this, aren’t I?
In theory, there is still time to catch up with some of these, but in reality, my schedule is full.
Glancing at my stats, I think I ended up listening to more audiobooks than actually reading books. I really need to put my focus back on reading with my eyes. My listening is slowly outpacing my other skills.
My goals going into 2025
Read 12 books from my physical TBR (I am not giving up… I will reduce my physical TBR… someday…)
only participate in bookclubs where I already own the book (This year, for sure, I will make it… )
Prioritize books where I also have the audiobook (It gives me a speed boost )
Restart dedicated kanji study (i.e. work through Kanji in Context & some handwriting practice)
I planned to read 24 manga and all the novels I bought last year November (19).
Well, I read far too many manga (81 so far) and too few novels (14 so far) this year. Nonetheless I bought some more novels this year (only a new book is a good book) and started them instead of the ones I bought last year
Concerning TV everything is going well, but they are re-creation. I will continue to watch about three episodes per day on average and one or the other movie in-between. Btw: I am thinking about counting manga as re-creation, too.
Goals: read more novels than I‘ll buy i.e. reduce my staple.
Read more nonfiction than last year An easy hurdle to clear when the number of books to beat is just 1 short Aozora essay
Complete Bingo card
Step out of my comfort zone (both genre and difficulty wise) I did this a bit, but not as much as I had hoped
Read at least 30 books It’s a bit hard to tell because of how some of them are categorized on Natively but I think I am at 29/30? So I should be able to clear this one by the end of the year
I’m putting a limit on the amount of new books I can buy. Max 4 rows of the bookshelf for unread books. If I want to buy more I have to first clear some space by reading more
I forgot where I put my 2024 goals so I will just write my goals for next year and mention what i remember from the previous year
1. Read 20 Books
In all my previous years I couldn’t read more than 12 jp novels. Not becuase I couldn’t but becuase I would spend my times on other books like reading books in english, study coding or read long jp books.
In 2025 tho, I want to spend more time on reading jp books and esp shorter books to boost my motivation.
2. Take N1 study seriously
The funny thing about high levels is that once you achieve your goal in this language (for me, the reason I started to study japanese is that I wanted to read books in japanese and play otome games) you longer feel the need to continue studying…
But in 2025, I really want to at least finish a few textbooks of N1 to make reading books and playing games easier.
3. Improve my Speaking + Improve my Writing
Since my goal is related to reading and listening, my speaking and writing ability aren’t that good.
I plan to take weekly speaking classes and for writing, I want to start writing blogs in japanese. A few lines on a specific topic every week then I will combine them in a blog and post it.
4. Read 40 vols of Manga
I was planning to read 52 vols this year (1 every week) but I only read 3
40 still a lot but hopefully I can make it. I will make it a priority this year i swear
5. Watch 2 Seasons of カケル
YESSSSS my fav activity I love nagase so much ughh I can’t wait to finish Season 2018 + 2017 (and maybe half 2016 if I have time since I am already halfway through S2018)
6. Finish the 366 Books (I have the yellow and the red one)
Now hear me out, this series is really boring BUT! it has a perfect variety of vocab.
I plan to read 2 random pages every day of the year and hopefully I will be able to finish them both before 2026
2025 Goals
As I mentioned in my notes thread, I’m scaling back my language goals. I’ve been overextending myself and not leaving room for the other things I want to do. So hopefully this coming year I’ll be able to reach more of my goals, while leaving room for flexibility
Japanese
5k pages
I have this goal every year. It’s just my yearly minimum.
125 hours of audiobooks, don’t bother to track the rest of my listening
I noticed that I don’t want to watch tv shows/movies/youtube because ‘ugh I have to track it’. It’s worth noting that I often skip scenes, watch half an episode, 2/3 of video, etc. So tracking listening has always been less smooth than tracking pages. I feel like I naturally want to watch Japanese content, so tracking matters less for getting those hours in
20 hours of shadowing in Japanese
This seems tiny but I think I did zero this year soooo
Relearn how to handwrite 100 kanji
Learn 728 (2/day) names from the Japanese name deck
Swedish
Work through a Swedish textbook, or combo of
I have 3 textbooks so I’m going to mix and match to see what clicks
Learn 5000 swedish words (note: I reset my anki deck, so I have quite the leg up on this goal)
Read 魔女の宅急便, 崖の上のポニョ, 世にも奇妙な商品カタログ2, ふしぎ駄菓子屋銭天堂, and もしもの世界ルーレットあったら便利?
Read all the remaining マジック・ツリーハウス that I own
Read more NSFW manga (I mostly read at work so getting to my NSFW manga has been hard)
Play more japanese games than this year
-Not only did I finish N3, but I made it halfway through N2 this year.
-Finished the last 70% of 魔法が消えていく within 4 weeks!
-Read all of the other books I intended to and then some
-I now work in a middle school, instead of elementary, so I think the NSFW one will be doable from now on.
-I played 7 games in japanese this year!
It’s a bit ambitious with the reading choices, but I finished my reading goals very early this year, so apparently I didn’t challenge myself as much as I could. I may add more books I plan to read next year, but I’m going to feel it out.
Edit: Idk why it says the google sheet is private. It’s not. Anyone with the link should be able to view it just fyi.
I’ve got one bingo currently. This is still possible; I have a shorter book in mind that would net me another bingo, then all I’d need to do is read a debut…
Read through all my physical manga (or read enough to decide not to continue it if need be):
Looool. At least I had dreams at the beginning of the year. So counting the stuff I also bought this year, I’ve read 38 of my physical manga, and have 176 left to read. Ah well; I can get a couple more read after I get off on break from work this month…
Work my way through the rest of the audiobooks I picked up this year (I won’t jot down an actual list; just gotta get through more):
Technically a no, but I think I finished all the audiobooks I bought committed to this year, so I’m at a tidy net 0?
Finish watching 5 TV shows and 5 movies in Japanese -
Well, I watched 1 movie and finished 3 TV seasons, which is still an increase from last year, at least. That TV seasons goal could still be completed, but I’m not going to worry myself overly much with it, I think.
This is a failure I’m happy about! I’ve still got plenty of F&B to read in the new year! And the series is coming out with volume 25 next year!! So excited!!
2024 Spicy Modifier: Only read books and join book clubs for books I already own :
No words needed here…
Bonus 2024: Dust off that Spanish
Nice! I blew this one away, for once! I read 8 total books this year, with another possible two if I push a little bit. ^o^
2025 Goals
Looking back on what I accomplished and what I didn’t, I think I need to be a little easier on myself and any expectations I want to meet. This year, for better or worse, turned out quite different in ways I didn’t expect, and I have some newly-gained/re-gained habits and hobbies I’d like to nurture in the new year, which unfortunately aren’t compatible with many hardcore Japanese goals. I’ll probably go back to this and tweak it down the line, but it’s good to start thinking of things now and at least get some thoughts down on paper, as it were.
Japanese
Translate: This has been something I’ve wanted to do for a good long while, and it seems right to add it as a formal goal. I’m not sure how to best set a number to the goal, though. Character count? Word count? Will have to think.
Read 50 manga from my physical TBR pile - This seems reasonable? I read around 38 this year, and really only started in the second half of the year.
Read 15 books from my physical TBR pile - By my count I finished 9 this year and have about 68 left. Let’s aim to finish…15. There. That sounds reasonable.
Other Languages
Spanish - I think I’d just like to continue the good work of reading with the Spanish Fiction Club and slowly whittling down my backlogged books from my school days. No hard numbers here.
Latin - I thought it’d be fun to play around a little bit with Familia Romana; I’ll make a tentative goal to work through the entire textbook next year.
Mandarin, French: you sleep
…And I think that’s all I want to put down at the moment. Like I said, I’ll need to ponder this all in a bit more depth, but maybe getting back down to super basic goals would be best.
I didn’t have any specific goals for 2024, other than reading and listening as much as possible. Although I hadn’t planned on it, I ended up taking the JLPT N1 in December.
2025 Goals:
Read 100 novels, light novels, or nonfiction books.
Start practicing output regularly.
Reach 20,000 cards in Anki (currently at 15,000).
I also want to read more in English and start creating Anki cards for it again.
2024 Goals
Well it’s looking like I’ll only have completed half of them by EOY, failing yet again.
The problem with frequency based goals is that once something comes up, it’s over.
I did finish WK60 and Bunpro N3 tho! This next year I will be minimizing SRS, except as tailored to what I’m reading. My vocab is currently trailing kanii and grammar by a LOT.
Let’s…start small and add if I actually get close to completing this time.
2025 Goals
Japanese:
Read 6 books, focusing on L27 and below in my TBR pile (current: 0/6)
Read 20 manga, focusing on TBR pile and Bingo board criteria (current: 0/20)
20 hours of listening (current: 0/20)
read at least 10 japanese books (manga and individual short stories/essays excluded)
read at least 5 stories on aozora (Dazai, Edogawa etc.)
continue sentence mining from books I read and do my anki reviews
get comfortable with books up to natively lvl ~33 (meaning “relatively” few lookups, my upper reading range would probably move to ~36)
write at least 5 book reviews on natively!
above all: read (somewhat) consistently. no reading 2 books in a week and then doing nothing for three months. (I read only in the first three months and then almost nothing )
A solid 0/6! Nice! But honestly I’m not ready to give up yet so most of my goals for 2025 will be quite similar since I think the main problem really wasn’t my goals but rather my priorities and (lack of) habits. Especially since it’s not like I didn’t read at all, most of it was just in German or English.
Language goals 2025
read at least 10 books in Japanese (novels, nonfiction or short story collections)
read 2 nonfiction books
read 5 short stories on aozora
read at least 2 books in the green level range (bonus points if you finish 予言の島)
listen to at least one audiobook (with the book or without)
participate in a bookclub and stick with the schedule (at least loosely)
write a natively review for every book you read that doesn’t have one yet
get back to anki sentence mining or find a better way to track and learn vocabulary
build a habit to read on the train instead of just scrolling social media
My goals were super vague, so it’s hard to make much evaluation of them
Read all SAO novels: 8/36 finished
Comfortably read L30-33 books & visual novels: made progress, but definitely not there
Seriously improve my reading speed: reading speed has noticeably improved
Transition to only using monolingual dictionary(?): I go back and forth, depending on complexity
Improve my writing/conversation ability: there’s certainly been some improvement, まだまだけど
Fate/Stay Night: I’m torturing myself with this again, and it’s doable (tho frustrating) in small stretches each day
Read as many 百合姫 monthly series as possible: I read everything in the magazine now, except if I don’t like it
Same for 少年エース: hasn’t really happened
Read more with audiobooks: Finished a few audiobooks this year - some with text, and some without
2025
I’m gonna try setting some more concrete goals this time around:
Read all of the physical books I own. Currently: 257/584, counting games, Blu-rays, etc
a. This is probably unachievable, since I buy more every month. So get the ratio up to 60% at least
Finish 42 light novels (my highest in any year was 21)
2024 went decently, but I’m hoping to achieve a better ratio between my languages in 2025. I’d prefer to have an equal amount of English vs. Japanese read in the future, and I want to incorporate more Mandarin and Korean now that my level is better in both of those languages.
2024 Goals:
Japanese
Read 50 LN/novels → 33/50 read (this was very ambitious, but I since I only read 22 books last year, this is a good improvement and the year’s not over yet)
Read 50 volumes of manga → 69/50!
Finish 3 novel series → I finished かくりよの宿飯, mostly caught up with ティアムーン帝国物語, and went from 8/33 volumes to 24/33 volumes of 本好きの下剋上 read, so I’m feeling pretty good about my progress here
Do 100 hours of listening practice without subtitles (because I read instead of listen ) → I listened a lot, but I stopped tracking the type of listening (subs/no subs) early on, oops
Read 20 TBR books → Met and exceeded!
I actually managed to hit most of my 2024 goals this year, thiugh I did miss a few of them.
The burnout healing is still in progress but I am working on it, hoping my physical and mental health will be in a better place next year so resolve this.
Managed to read more, finished both Flying witch and Ruri Dragon manga as well as 8 children’s books (5 from the Zenitendo series), but didn’t manage to read any light novels or re-read Zoo book 1 or キノの旅 but maybe next year?
I completed MNN blue textbook though will revisit it for everything that went a bit over my head.
I took more lessons and started shadowing, both of which have helped improve my speaking alongside my language exchanges.
And I begun using my kids Jp-Jp dictionary and understood most of what I read.
All in, considering the trials and challenges I have faced this year as well as the burnout and physical health issues, I feel I’ve managed not too badly. There’s just under a month left so I might manage to squeeze a few more books in as well as some more reviewing of MNN blue textbook before next year.
Goals for 2025
Read more, hopefully finish the Zenitendo series by end of 2025 and progress to something else (with a view to re-read Zenitendo series in 2026 intensively as part of my regular study)
Continue with my language exchanges and lessons, alongside the shadowing to help improve my speaking and pronunciation (with a view to take Dogen’s pitch accent course in my free time in February)
Review the grammar I’m stumbling over as well as making progress with Tobira (possibly as part of a small study group with others on here if I can keep up with the schedule)
Listening more (I have all the Zenitendo audiobooks as well as several others I would like to get through next year, alongside doing podcasts more regularly)
Continue practicing Kanji and writing in Japanese (it’s the main thing that interested me in Japanese all those years ago yet I haven’t devoted much time to it)
Try to form a better habit for studying so I am more consistent with my time and manage to get more done within that.
I haven’t set specific time goals or number of books (aside from finishing the Zenitendo series) just because I don’t want to overwhelm or disappoint myself if I don’t manage them so these are a bit more flexible. With the Zenitendo series I was reading one in just over a week so 18 books across the year should be totally doable without any issues.
