English Summary

Yuri Shibuya was living a pretty normal life. That changed the day he was dunked into a toilet after an attempt to save a classmate from a gang of bullies. Instead of just getting a good soaking, he’s pulled in. The next thing he knows, he’s in a world that vaguely resembles medieval Europe.

If that’s not odd enough, he’s told that he is to be the next Maoh, just because he has black hair and black eyes. The Maoh is the King of the Mazoku, who are coexisting not-so-peacefully with the humans in this world.

Much to his subjects’ dismay, he’s totally different from the rulers they’re accustomed to. He’s kind, considerate, a believer in justice, and not willing to use violence to solve conflicts. Not exactly someone they want running a country on the very brink of war.

Now, Yuri has to deal with trying to become a good Maoh, while at the same time attempting to adapt to this lands’ customs and culture, all in a world where the tension between the humans and Mazoku is reaching its peak.

Also available as a manga, 今日から マ のつく自由業! (series) | L24??, and anime, 今日からマ王! | L30??.

Nostalgia won 10000% lmao

So I looked into the contents of the combined version, it has a collection of the illustrations and the first 2 books so it’s not some kind of weird mess playout a.k.a no messy arrangments lol
page wise it fits too

Huh. So if the first omnibus only has two volumes collected, are the others much thicker, or is the series not fully collected in omnibus version, I wonder?

I didn’t consider that
probably?

Checking the contents of the final omnibus on the Amazon description, it looks like they cover up to volume 8, so not even 2 per consistently if that’s accurate.

Last one was published in 2014, so they must have been selling quite poorly…

I loved this anime when I was much younger! I won’t be joining in though as I’m already reading too many things :frowning:

Nice, I’ll definitely try to join if I’m not too overwhelmed with other book clubs

Just ordered my copy, should be here in a week.

You picked up the OG LN, right? Where did you buy it from?

Yeah, just got it from Mandarake (along with a whole bunch of other manga and LNs  ). I may end up getting the digital edition too, though, just for convenience.

ETA: Just got the ebook from bookwalker using the 40% off coupon that’s available until the 28th. :+1:

I’ve added the chapter breakdown from the digital combined version to the home post; I’ve also got the physical / original edition that I can add if necessary, but it doesn’t seem like anyone else will be reading it.

The separation between votes is quite funny  I guess we have two level groups.

Since Early/Late December are leading the poll, we may start on the week beginning the 11th or 18th as a compromise. Another poll?

It looks like we’ll probably be reading 15 pages/week, so I’ve made a sample timetable splitting up the chapters (averaging 15 pages per week).

1 1 25 19 end of chapter

Yeah, um, about that…

Also, I went and changed my participation vote - just ordered a physical copy.

How well does the manga follow the ln? I don’t think I can fit a ln in rn, but if I can follow along with the manga, that’d work.

If I remember correctly from reading a bit of the English translation of both the manga and LN then it sticks better then the anime but was still it’s own separate thing plot points wise
